Change air filter on 03 SLK

Should the cover of a 03 Mercedes SLK air filter have a gap on the side that slides in to the slots and does not have clips or should all sides be sealed?

Basically should the top and bottom housing seal tight?

I know you've both said a few things you may regret and tensions are running strong, but I really think you and Google should try and get along with each other again. Having to pass messages through people instead of just talking to him is kind of childish.

I'm sure he's not feeling that bitter about it anymore... Just drop him a line, say hello. I'm sure within no time you guys will be friends again and he'll be able to help you out with questions such as this :)

Air filters, along with the carburetor, dangling sprocket, rear carbonizer, transmission, and right front tire, are superfluous. Just take 'em off and throw 'em away. Should run like a ***** after that.

Damn right all sides should be sealed, otherwise you'll suck dirty unfiltered air into the intake, which in turn causes premature wear of your piston rings, which in turn causes a premature loss of compression, which in turn causes your engine to burn excess amounts of oil, which in turn will result in a failed smog inspection!

Really, this is about the most simple service procedure you can do on a car... better let somebody in the know handle this for you.
Why were you monkeyin 'round with it in the first place? :dunno:

:facepalm::1orglaugh

air filter? isnt that like the worlds easiest thing?

Yes, but you were supposed to be impressed that he drives an eight year-old Mercedes. He had veiled intentions in bringing that up. He's anxious about joining a new forum and this was his way of trying to fit in here. His car was his way of gaining acceptance.

You could at least fake being in awe for fuck's sake. Show some goddamn decency.

haha ohhhhhhhhh i get it now.

unfortunately for me, i dont like cars. mopeds for all!

hey, do you have an expensive Mercedes?

Wow.

I am so impressed and envious.

Please post pictures so we can all be impressed and envious. (also, please forward your address so I can take a ... err, closer 'look'.)

Open pod air filter? Like on some of the new Camrys? The Mercs have one that's supposed to be more fuel efficient as it allows greater air flow as well as filtering of particles.

Make sure you check the flux capacitor and the hydrolic foils before you dick around with that.

I have no idea how you'd install it, but check this out:

Come on. You know you want it. Just admit the lust and reach for the phone with one hand and your credit card with the other. :drool1:

BTW, looks like K&N also makes a replacement (washable) filter element for that car. And yeah, Facetious is right: if you're going back to a stock type filter, it should be sealed, so as not to let in any dust or dirt.

omg now your benzo can suck up hot air (which decreases HP) just like all the riceboys in the 99hp honda civics that sound like airplanes at 25mph

An engine is basically just a giant air pump. In order to make more power, you introduce/move more air and more fuel through the systems. Short ram, cold air intakes do just that. Given how this system works and where it's placed, he won't be sucking in any more hot air than he is now, he'll just be sucking in more air overall. I'm not into Mercedes or SLK tuning, but if I'm not mistaken, his car is fitted with an intercooled supercharger ("kompressor"). If that's the case, then a bigger intercooler and a more open exhaust (with smooth, mandrel bends) would also give him more power. He could also go with bigger injectors, a bigger fuel pump and have the kompressor turned up to give more boost. The only caution is that when you add any of these items or do any of this stuff, it's a wise idea to have your car properly retuned, so that you don't burn a piston, etc., because you've gotten your air/fuel ratio out of whack. With just wise parts selection and good tuning, getting 350 hp from a 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder/EJ20 is no big deal these days. So I assume it would be about the same with a Merc supercharged engine.

Now that I've spent about $7500 of his money, I'll wish him good luck in getting that air filter sealed down. Definitely don't want to let the dust in. The dogs out? Yeah. :nanner: The dust in? Nopey! :******:

The dude has a nice car. Good luck to him fixing it.

Before anyone else decides to rip the **** and I would suggest at this point no one else does,

Anyone feel like answering the gents question?
