Case Natalee Holloway

Natalee Holloway: the case history

The disappearance

18-year old Natalee Holloway from Birmingham, AL, disappears on Monday night May 30, 2005 on the beach of the island of Aruba. She was together with Joran van der Sloot (17), the last known person to see her alive.

The suspicion

Joran is arrested in June 2005, but has to be released three months afterwards. The body of Natalee has never been found and there’s not enough evidence implicating Joran to keep him in custody. November 21, 2007Joran is arrested for the second time, but is re-released two weeks later. On December 18, 2007 the investigators close the case officially. If there is no newly discovered evidence against him, Joran can live as a free man for the rest of his life.

Peter R. DeVries

Already in 2005 Peter R. DeVries receives requests to research the disappearance. In 2006 he collects some interesting tips and receives (a part of) the investigation files. He discovers that Joran has most likely lied while being interrogated by the Aruban police. DeVries considers these lies incomprehensible unless Joran is really involved in the disappearance of Natalee. He decides to make a trip to Aruba, together with reporter Kees van der Spek, to research the case on site.

The research in Aruba

In Aruba DeVries discovers some engaging facts, that all point in the direction of Joran van der Sloot. The police also appear to have made a lot of mistakes. This puts the investigation on the case in a new perspective. Especially since Joran’s father played a questionable role in the caper.

The broadcast

26 November 2006 Peter R. DeVries broadcasts a much-discussed report on the case. He presents the facts about the investigation and unveils some shocking information. At the end of the program Peter R. DeVries rings the doorbell of Joran’s home in The Netherlands to ask his reaction on the findings. The broadcast has been repeated twice in 2007 and reaches millions of viewers. In the meantime Joran presents a book about the Natalee Holloway case in which he admits his lies, but emphasizes his innocence.

The red wine

11 January 2008 Joran (in the presence of his parents) look each other in the eyes for the first time in the renowned Dutch television talk show Pauw & Witteman. Just after the show Joran suddenly throws a glass of red wine in the face of DeVries who, during the night, repeatedly confronted him with his lies. The pictures of the
wine incident spread all over the world.

Today, in The Netherlands, there will be a documentary from Peter R. e Vries in which he solves this case.
His internetsite: www.peterrdevries.com (English version) gives more information. So it is said that ABC has the television rights for the United States.

Hopefully this case is solved, so the family of Natalee can give it a own place in thir hearts and that they'll find peace!

Here's the latest news from Peter R. deVries his own site:
FINISHED!

- MATCH OF THE YEAR –

It’s Sunday afternoon, almost half past one. Normally I would have attended the match of the year: The Amsterdam soccer team Ajax against the Rotterdam team Feyenoord.

I usually never miss it, but for the TV moment of the year I made an exception.

Wow, it’s almost done now. We have finished the studio recordings, in which I present the up coming show. During the recording I began to feel the price of the hard work, I made some slips, so it took longer than normal to record. My colleague Kees van der Spek rushed to the studio to finish the montage. I joked: After that we’ll bring this tape to the SBS studios, under full police surveillance. Imagine what would happen if this tape disappeared!

- ONE BIG JET FLAME -

Beth Twitty, who was my guest the last couple of days, has already left for the United States again. She will be appearing in a well known talk show tomorrow and could not stay any longer. I had a memorable time with her. On the Internet I’ve read some strange stories about Beth, but these don’t fit with my experiences.

I’m glad we’re ready to go. We needed every second the past three days, from Thursday, the moment it became known that we had a scoop, until now, but it feels like a long time to wait for this news. I realize this and understand the criticism and annoyance of some of our audience.

I have already written that the speed our story becoming world news surprised me. It wasn’t a slow burn but a jet flame and then yes, three days becomes a boring wait. But it could not have gone any other way. The story simply was not finished yet.

It takes a lot of work to make a two hour documentary, even when you have the material in your pocket. Normally you need one hour for every one minute of edited material, so a report of 90 minutes costs 90 hours. That amounts to two full working weeks that Kees van der Spek and top editor Rick Lankreijer did in just a few days.

- COMING TO THE UNITED STATES -

In the editorial room we can now slow down a little bit. When it’s finished, the tension is less. The only one still busy making phone calls is our ‘press officer’ Peter Schouten. With his P.A. Kelly he reflects about the American networks which want to have me appear on their shows. We’ll be visiting the United States from Tuesday to Saturday with a large crew, to make a grand tour of TV shows and current affair programs.

Currently we are in negotiations with Oprah, Larry King (CNN), Good Morning America (ABC), Greta Van Susteren (Fox tv) The Today Show (ABC), The Early Show (CBS), America Most Wanted ( Fox Network), Court TV en de Nancy Grace Show. Some shows disappear and some new shows appear. Because they all have their own personal demands and preference for practical or personal reasons we can’t always accommodate them.

We have to be selective. After all, we can only be in one place at a time. We’ll also go to where Beth Twitty lives, Montgomery, Alabama. There are some interviews on the slate there as well.

All right, I will not reflect too much on the things to come, first and foremost, the coming show. I’ll watch it tonight with my family and friends who are as curious to see it as everyone else. And no…I haven’t told or shown them anything yet.

Well, the coverage was there tonight.

Very briefly:
Yoran van der Sloot, the suspect who was the last who saw Natalee alive, was returning to The Netherlands in 2007. He has started friendschip with an Dutch man, Patrick, who was born in The Antilles and grew up there and on Aruba. They had met in a Casino in Holland and, because of the fact that this Patrick was well known in Aruba, they became friends. During the last few months, the were very close friends and talked a lot about everything except the "case Natalee." Yoran began to trust Patrick and Patrick was brought in contact with Peter de Vries and they agreed to make tapes of the conversations in the car.

During these conversations it came out that Natalee and Yoran had met in a bar and they agreed to see eachother somewhere at midnight. They made a walk along the beach, they were flirting and starting making love. At one time, Natalee began to shake and Yoran didn't know what to do. He assumed she was ded and he called a friend he could trust, because he knew something about that friend. Yoran returned to his parents home (in Aruba)and this friend from Aruba took Natale's body and took her into the sea and dumped her into the ocean.

Yoran made the impression that it didn't care him at all. The only thing he was excited about, was not her dead, but the money he could get because of the fact that Justice department had wrongly accused him.
For me: Yoran doesn't care at all, has no repect for Natalee, her family and girls in general.

So far, you have to watch it for yourselves.

Eric

I am definitely going to be watching this on 20/20 tonight. I'll admit it, the curiosity has gotten the better of me. I will feel better if this case is solved, and if Joran does indeed deserve it, that he will be behind bars.

Conspiracy...
They are talking about this case on Nacy Grace. The show replays tonight at 10pm.

Holloway Suspect: 'I Know What Happened'
Dutch Student Said Natalee Holloway's Body Was Dumped in the Ocean.

In surveillance recordings aired on a Dutch TV special this evening, Joran van der Sloot, a former suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, said the American teen appeared lifeless on an Aruban beach three years ago during a romantic tryst, and "she'll never be found."

Article

I believed Vander Sloot was guilty from the beginning and all evidence continues to point back to him. He should be in jail by the summer.

Everyone knew from the jump that this was pretty much how things went down. But the police fucked up the investigation big time and as a result couldn't prove that they were guilty.

I watched 20/20, but was a bit puzzled. I'm not convinced Joran didn't either rape or kill Natalee.

Although Patrick was usually very smooth reacting to Joren's story, I think he was clearly showing his disagreement with him which I think might have prompted Joran to color it a little. It is possible Joran raped her, or killed her. The question keeps coming up that she maybe was alive and why didn't he call for help? Her Mother although not asked said nothing about any type epilepsy in her Daughter's history.

The other thing is that his friend calmly denied all responsibility for taking the body and throwing it overboard and was supposed to be out of the country at the time. He also said he didn't own a boat, so it seems there was some distortion of what Joran told Patrick. Joran also said he had something on his friend that forced him to help, but you would think that friend would be in a panic now if that were true and he was turning on Joren

I would think he did get the body in the water, but there's something missing about how he disposed of it.

I always remember all the little tidbits at or during the infancy of these types of "big stories" . . . That said, I recall that there was some (DJ ?) that was arrested along with the three guys in the beginning. Does anybody remember that ? Said DJ was said to have a boat moored near where the crime was said to take place. I wonder how efficiently the investigating authorities dusted that water craft ?

Yeah, I think that's what most people would conclude. He had to have drugged her or done something that directly caused her death, harm, or unconsciousness for him not to want to call for medical help.

i have to admit to not having this story very closely at the beginning but i did watch the 20/20 show tonight on this "confession" video. i found the videos to be a little odd , why is he confiding this story to this guy patrick and how much of it is joran's spin on it? i got the impression a lot of it was spun in his favour but i don't understand why he is even telling the story to patrick , the ending video left me to guess that he ,joran, likely had much more to do with disposing of the body than he suggests on the video.

Yeah, I got that impression too. He definitely tried to make it come across like a total accident and that he had almost nothing to do with it at all (even disposing of the body). I think he was trying to keep from implicating himself as much as possible.

He and Patrick met in a Casino and from day 1, Yoran was looking up to him. Maybe because Patrick was born in Aruba and know much abou the Island, maybe Yoran believed patrick was a criminal (could be) and he was looking for someone who can introduce him into this world.

Some here in Holland thought the conversations between Yoran and Patrick was, sorry my bad English, a set up to prove something. I mean, I've heard (don't know if its true) that Patrick was the one to make contact with Peter R de Vries.
