Car hits crowd at street race in Maryland, 8 dead

There's a certain irony here with the "passing white car".

Generally, I take it for granted that moving vehicles don't see me or others on thoroughfares not recommended for pedestrian travel, especially in the dark.

This incident makes me think about all the stuff that we used to get away with . . . by mere inches or seconds at times. They days of stoopid ! 16 - 25 years of age. The mindset was that nothing could kill us, much less, harm us.

Either there is a God or we were lucky, spared or both !

Sounds like another Darwin as far as I'm concerned. Even when I was young, I never saw the appeal to this type of racing. When I was young, I occasionally would race in traffic (which is probably more dangerous) but I never thought of drag racing.

The two racers should be charged with something for these deaths even though the people were idiots to stand in the road.

I just saw this on Yahoo. With that kind of sport, you'd think accidents involving spectators would be more common. :dunno:

:rofl2: This whole story reeks of unimaginable stupidity, even the news story was written with enveloping shroud of moronosity:

"Fans had spilled onto the smoky, dark roadway to watch the cars drive away when a white Ford Crown Victoria unexpectedly came up from behind and smashed into them"

What is so unexpected about a car travelling on a highway?

Damn Europeans are holding over us again. At least their drunk fans at the Rally races seem to always avoid being speed beefed by the cars.

My exact thoughts. :yesyes:

I can't understand how a race such as this would garner the attention and imagination of some 50 observers at 1 AM ! up to age 60 to boot !!.

At least the host competitors were racing something race worthy given the amount of smoke . . . the same smokescreen that was, in part, a factor in the carnage. :dunno:

Back in High School, we found a 4 lane wide dead end road, yet to be connected with another, out by the original IBM Campus for our racing purposes. The only trouble was we were trapped whe the sheriff arrived .

Heya Pete !

Where's your sig ?

I'm kiddin' . . . in bad taste. :o

You find this funny? Aren't you glad you aren't waking up to a empty house with your loved one gone? That you can laugh here and point fingers at the obvious? Instead of knowing you'll never see, or talk to a loved one again. That you aren't having facing the day making funeral arrangements or having to figure out what you will be wearing to a funeral service? *sigh* I can't believe that post Peter.

Yes, what they were doing was wrong. It was illegal and beyond stupid, but its a practice in every town everywhere. All towns have one I am sure. Many children have lost mothers, fathers, many people brothers, sisters, friends and significant others.

Age doesn't matter, nobody should have been there, but that's not the point, lives were lost and that is tragic. They and those left behind all paid too high of a price for that choice.

You had me till the end, the sig tipped the scale.

BRILLIANT! So profound Legz.

There is a way to do street racing totally illegaly by still having a minimum of safety...

There is no need for a crowd at an illegal street race... and if there is they should be at the starting line not at the end of the track when they can get hitted by a car just like it happened in this case!

Peoples who do this kind of unstructured random bulshit are ruining it and making a bad name for peoples who do this in a smart structured way...

Too bad it killed people

If you read, they were at the starting line, they walked into the road after the race started.

And I disagree at least in this: drag racing is never safe on public roads.

That's why they didn't see the car coming, they had their backs turned. Street racing is dangerous no matter how smart the organizer or his friends think he is.

I just think this whole thing is kind of stupid. People do dangerous things knowing that they are dangerous, and then when shit happens they wonder what went wrong. If they wanted to attend an illegal street race at 3 in the morning, then fine with me, but I'm not feeling sorry for someone that should realize the risks.

It's too bad though that their families will end up paying for their stupidity.

You have got to be kidding Me.What is next?Target shooting on city streets?--People who do this racing in a "smart structured" way are still criminals putting innocent lives at RISK,and in this case TAKING innocent lives.I would surely hate to lose a friend or loved one to this form of childish behavior.:2 cents:

By the way Double L, the humor I find in this story is not that people died, it's that the writer wrote in a way that he was surprised that people died. It's no surprise at all that people milling around on a smoke filled highway, with no visibility, in the dark, at 4 am...got hit by a car.

And I'll be honest here, I don't know any of these people or their relatives. I don't care that it happened. In a Darwinian sense it should improve our gene pool. From a global warming and overpopulation point of view, it certainly can't hurt the cause. In the end, this incident will only serve to make our species just a little bit stronger.

As harsh as it might sound to everybody I agree with Peter. Do I sympathize with the families, sure, but standing around on a highway with your back turned to oncoming traffic is basically a death wish anyways.
