California Gubernatorial Recall

Does the release of 76,000 prisoners make Californians more safe or less safe?

It may be too late for Newsom to appeal to the soft on crime Wokies. Many moderate Liberals I know also are sick of Newsom. His crap has gone well beyond the D vs R game.

Oftentimes a life sentence is considered 25 years. By cutting it from 1/3 to 1/5 it would be reducing the sentence from serving 8 years to 5 as long as they are eligible for parole.

In legal terms, "25 to life" means a prisoner is sentenced to a life term in prison but can become eligible for parole after serving 25 years. It is a way of establishing a clear minimum sentence without completely removing the ability for a parole release.

While the sentence may officially require 25 years before parole is available, in some cases this may be subject to prison population conditions, good behavior or other factors. If parole is not granted, however, the term may last the inmate's natural lifespan.
In the case of particularly heinous crimes, the sentence may forbid the possibility of parole and may just be referred to as a "life sentence."

Less safe would be my bet.

Less safe would be my bet.

Seems obvious to you and me but Californians aren't dismissed as "nutballs" for no reason.

This is very important to understand about us Californians...
We vote to give Sacramento money then we forget what the money was for that we voted on or if we even voted at all then Sacramento asks for more money for the same thing that they had no plans on doing anything about and we give them the money again for the same thing we forgot about.

I do admit I give directions exactly like this...

and gets you kudos from your base.
So why not reduce the sentences of those who aren't serving life?
There have to be lots of minor drug possession or other similar convictions which account for a large part of the population. Why should they be looking at the worst of the bunch? Chance or no chance of parole, if you're convicted for life, you're left some serious victims who are going to be traumatized just knowing you've been released. I would much rather uphold the rights of victims of crime than those who committed then any day. I would hope that's not too hard of a call to make.

I will defer to my favorite Californian on that one:

You know at least one of those released will do something horrific and will become the new poster child of the program. Willie Horton will be pleased to be replaced.

The state auditor found some issues with in-prison rehab: https://www.auditor.ca.gov/reports/2018-113/index.html
https://www.ppic.org/publication/recidivism-of-felony-offenders-in-california/ (They claim to be nonpartisan, but another group called them 'liberal')
"The share of felony offenders rearrested for any offense within two years declined to ... 66% over the four-year period. The two-year reconviction rate dropped ... to 35%."

You can expect 50,000 of these felons to find themselves back in the system within 4 years and 26,000 will be reconvicted.

Serious question: Let's say you HAD to reduce the prison population in your state, and you have sole control over how to do it.
You don't have the funds to build more prisons, but all other options are on the table. What do you do?
(I'm kind of curious to see how in-sync we are here)

It's kinda hard to answer that. As far as California goes one day Sacramento claims we have a surplus of money then the next they claim to be broke and need more tax money. I guess it's what you believe about the funds and also their priorities as far as how to spend the tax money we already gave them. Sacramento gets a lot of tax revenue out of Californians regardless.

Taking your question literally:
I don't agree with this solution, but it seems about the only 'free' way: You would release any prisoners close to the end of their terms (say 12 months or less remaining), release non-violent offenders regardless of their remaining terms, and grant parole generously when applicable. Next, you would need to reduce the number of criminals entering prison by incarceration becoming the punishment of last resort. Your Bernie Madoffs and Martha Stewarts of the world would not see the inside of a prison. (They went to Federal prisons, but are used for illustrative purposes.)

It's not that easy though because a social question arises: Why should white-collar criminals stealing millions of dollars (or taking bribes) get away with theft/fraud while others get jailed because they used a gun to steal a hundred bucks from the local 7-11?

Prison population is a function of frequency (crimes committed and crimes punishable with prison) and severity (sentencing duration). Reducing either input would reduce the population over time. Addressing the reasons for criminal activity has been studied for ages, but here we are. Deterrents (fines, probation, jail) have a limited effect, since no one is thinking they will be caught. Mandatory sentencing guides have reduced the discretionary powers of judges - for good and bad I am sure.

We need policing (government), but the primary responsibility is with communities as a whole. Preventing citizens from entering the system is the top priority. Once they get in the system it is too late.

Jenner is 'All for the Wall' and wants to 'restore and renew the California dream'. "The child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb."

Someone in the past few years (2017-2021) rolled back transgender rights and Jenner is aiming squarely at that person's base for their campaign?

This is all one big publicity stunt, right?
No pollster has asked Californians about Jenner yet, but a YouGov national poll from January-March 2021 gave her just an 18 percent favorable rating — along with a 48 percent unfavorable rating.

To quote PT Barnum "I don’t care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right" Interest in the Kardashian clan seems to be slowing so have to stay in the public eye somehow.

Maryland Governor Grants Posthumous Pardons to 34 Victims of Racial Lynching

...Wut?

"Hey, lets grant pardons to some guys that were lynched over 120 years ago"

I guess that would be one way to score some "woke" points while still keeping the status quo...?
Indeed. Hogan likes to get to score those points.

Woke in the 70s looked like this: It took Robert E Lee 110 years to get his citizenship restored.

Jenner is winning?

To be honest I am voting to recall Governor Newsom but I think there's a good chance he survives the recall. If he gets a good scare and has his political career kneecapped I'll consider it a moral victory. If he gets kicked out Angelyne may get sworn in. Believe it or not that early 80s Hollywood icon is on the ballot too. I wish I could vote for Larry Elder 100 times but I'm not a ballot harvester.

There's always someone worse. Sometimes you count your blessings even when they more resemble a curse.
