Mayweather's friend indicted, is Floyd the real target?

Prosecutors have*indicted*27-year-old Ocie Harris of Chicago, an associate of Floyd Mayweather Jr., in last August's shooting at a skating rink.*Harris*will appear on*May 4 in a Las Vegas*court to face charges*involving attempted ******, assault with a deadly weapon and weapons violations.

On the day of the shooting, the victim*Quincey Williams, 24, had words with Mayweather at*a skating rink in Las Vegas. Mayweather was upset over some text messages*that were sent by*Williams.

Williams made*allegations that*Mayweather threatened his life during the argument. Less than an hour*later, an associate of Mayweather, alleged to have been Harris,*was standing in the parking lot and fired shots into Williams' vehicle. Nobody was hurt.

Harris was previously arrested in Chicago and freed after posting $7,500 bail on March 6 in Las Vegas.*A Las Vegas judge*sent him back to jail on*Wednesday after increasing his bail to $140,000.

Here is the interesting part. Police have said*Mayweather is not a suspect in the shooting, and*a prosecutor says*Mayweather isn’t named in the indictment. But Harris’ lawyer, Tom Pitaro, doesn't believe the prosecutor. He believes the real target is Mayweather himself and he's*accusing the prosecutors of pressing the case against Harris to try to get Mayweather.*It's being alleged the prosecutors are taking a*hard line with Harris, because their*goal*is to get Harris to*implicate Mayweather in the incident. Mayweather has denied any involvement in the shooting.

Valuev, Solis tell their promoters 'Make the fight happen'

Russian paper Reklama reports former*WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev and Olympic gold medal winner Odlanier Solis have told their respective promoters to make the fight. The WBC ordered the two heavyweights to a mandatory fight. The winner meets champion Vitali Klitschko, who defends against Polish champion Albert Sosnowski on May 29*in a voluntary defense.

The WBC only*gave their promoters until April 29 to make a deal or else*a puse bid will take place. Reklama reports the promoters, Don King and Sauerland Event for Valuev, and Top Rank and Arena Box for Solis, are not held up over money. They are trying to pick a date and location for the fight. The paper says Germany would be the likely location.

Weights: Arreola 250.5, Adamek 217

Heavyweights Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek stepped on the scales for their very anticipated showdown on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Arreola came on the scale and weighed-in at 250.5-pounds, 13-pounds less than he weighed for the December fight with Brian Minto, and his lowest weight since June 2008 when he weighed 239-pounds and knocked out Chazz Witherspoon. Arreola's body looked slimmer, and with more definition. Adamek, the former light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, looked very trim at 217-pounds. HBO will televise their fight.

David Haye: "Mayweather vs. Pacquiao needs to happen"

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has given his thoughts on the failed negotiations to make a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. After weeks of negotiations earlier this year, the two sides could not agree on the cut-off date for the random Olympic style **** tests. Mayweather made a demand for the testing to continue until 14-days before the fight and Pacquiao wanted them to stop at the 24-day mark. For the state of boxing, Haye says the fight needs to happen.

“It is definitely a fight which needs to happen, for the state of boxing. It is one that has to be made. I was itching to see that fight, and was ready to go over for it at one point,” Haye told Gareth Davies of The Telegraph. ” When they made the fight so quickly, over a week of news in December [last year], I couldn’t help feeling that someone would find a way for it not to happen.”

Haye is a big fan of both fighters. Their skills sets have made the British boxer very eager to see which of the two will come out on top.

“With fights as big as that, there is always some drama. What has happened could hype the whole situation just to make it even bigger later this year or next year. I’m desperate to watch that fight. The skill levels of the two fighters make it unmissable. I truly enjoy watching Pacquiao fight whenever he ***** into a ring. I admire boxers who come to fight, and he is thrilling when he ***** inside the ropes. He is an ambassador for the sport. That fight has to be made. It is a massive fight that has to happen soon or later. Clottey was a tough fight, but the hype and build up around a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could create the fight of a generation," Haye said.

Barrera is Top Rank bound? Returns on Chavez-Duddy?

BoxingScene.com was advised by a reliable source in Mexico that Marco Antonio Barrera has signed a promotional agreement with Top Rank, and plans to return, as a lightweight, on the Latin Fury 15 pay-per-view undercard, which takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The main event features a middleweight contest between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and John Duddy.

Barrera (68-7, 43 KOs), a former three division champion, has been inactive since the technical decision loss to Amir Khan from last March. During that fight, a clash of heads opened up a huge cut on Barrera. The ringside doctor stopped the fight in the fifth round, but he could have stopped it much sooner. Under the governing rules, Khan-Barrera was sent to the scorecards because at least four rounds had been completed. The cut was serious enough that Barrera's doctors told him it would take at least eight months to properly heal.

Froch vs. Abraham: Carl eyes City Ground as venue

WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch faces Arthur Abraham in the third stage of Showtime's Super Six Boxing Classic. The round-robin tournament will have Froch fighting Abraham on the tentative date of August 21. Froch says the fight was going to land in the Nottingham Arena but he feel the venue is not big enough. Froch believes the fight can bring around 30,000 fans to the City Ground.

"I'm hoping my fight against Arthur Abraham will be at the City Ground in late August. We were looking at having it at the Nottingham Arena but don't think it is big enough. I'm praying it will be at the City Ground as I'm a huge Nottingham Forest fan and it would be amazing to fight there," Froch said.

Marco Antonio Barrera: More infomations on his return

BoxingScene.com was advised by a source close to the promotion of the upcoming Latin Fury 15 pay-per-view, that former three-division champion Marco Antonio Barrera (68-7, 43 KOs) will indeed*see action*on the undercard. The main event features a middleweight contest between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and John Duddy. In the co-feature, WBO super flyweight champion Jorge Arce will move up to bantamweight to challenge interim-WBO champion Eric Morel.

Barrera, 36, is looking to rebound from the technical decision loss to Amir Khan from last March. During that fight, a clash of heads opened up a huge cut on Barrera. The ringside doctor stopped the fight in the fifth round, but he could have stopped it much sooner. Under the governing rules, and because four rounds of action were in the books, Khan-Barrera was sent to the scorecards. Kessler: Carl Froch doesn't fight well going backwards

Coming off a loss in his Group Stage 1 bout to Andre Ward, Kessler was desperate to get on the board and re-capture the World Boxing Council (WBC) world title belt Froch brought to Denmark. Kessler brought in legendary trainer Jimmy Montoya to help craft multiple game plans for the fight. He also brought to the ring the will to win the fight, a true slugfest between European champions.

In the eighth, Kessler stunned Froch with a short right hand that opened up a cut on Froch’s nose and had many at ringside thinking it was broken.

“I (studied) his fights and he isn't good fighting backwards,” Kessler continued. “I hurt him with the straight right hand (eighth) and I saw it turn. Then he fought my fight instead of his.”

Froch regained his composure and was steadfast, catching Kessler in the 10th with an explosive right hand. A deep cut opened over Kessler’s left eye which may have been scar tissue from the Ward fight last November.

“In my last two fights I'm starting to look like a fighter,” joked Kessler after the fight. “No more modeling! I have to be careful of the cuts. I have to move my head more.”

Froch: If I was back home, I would have beaten Kessler

The fight had a lot of close rounds. Froch was feeling his emotions after the fight was over. He said the fight was close and he believes the decision would have went his way if the event was held in Nottingham, England. Froch is now going home to relax and plans to return to the gym in a few weeks to start training for the August 21 bout with Arthur Abraham, taking place in the third stage of the Super Six Boxing Classic.

Froch gave a lot of credit to Kessler in the contest.

"I feel terrible. I lost my title but I don't want to make a mockery of anything. I think if that was at home in my town, the decision would have went the other way," Froch said.

"He's a strong proud warrior. The Danish fans have been absolutely brilliant. we said from the start the match between me and Mikkel Kessler would be one for the crowd. I though the fight could have went either way."

"If I beat Abraham I'm there. I will definitely be back."

Tomasz Adamek edges Chris Arreola; Alfredo Angulo wins

At the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27KOs) won a very hard-fought twelve round majority decision over Chris Arreola (28-2, 25KOs). The scores were 114-114 a draw, 115-113 and 117-111.

After six rounds of action, the fight was close with Julio using a lot of movement and a busy workrate to win rounds. Angulo had his moments when they traded in close, but Julio was able to take the punches. Julio was the busier of the two fighters and used his fast hands to fire hard shots and then get away before Angulo could counter. Around the eight round, Julio slowed down and Angulo began to slowly take over. Julio's left eye was cut from a shot in the ninth round. In the eleventh, Angulo landed a bomb that dropped Julio down very hard. Julio beat the count but he was in no shape to continue and the ref stopped the fight.

John "The Quiet Man" Ruiz announces his retirement

LAS VEGAS (Apr. 26, 2010) – After a professional career spanning 18 years, highlighted by becoming the first and only Heavyweight World Champion of Latino heritage, two-time world champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz today announced his retirement from the ring.

Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs) defeated three world champions – Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – as well as top contenders such as Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Jameel McCline and Kirk Johnson. Six of John’s nine career losses were to world champions.*

“I’ve had a great career but it’s time for me to turn the page and start a new chapter of my life,” Ruiz said. “It’s sad that my final fight didn’t work out the way I wanted, but, hey, that’s boxing. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with two world titles, 12 championship fights, and being the first Latino Heavyweight Champion of the World. I fought anybody who got in the ring with me and never ducked anyone. Now, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my ******. *

“I want to thank all of fans for staying in my corner through a long, up-and-down ride, as well as members of my ****** and team – my manager and legal advisor, Atty. Tony Cardinale, my *******, Eddie (cornerman), and Keith McGrath (strength-and conditioning coach) who’ve been with me so long. I also want to thank my trainer Miguel Diaz and (assistant) Richie Sandoval for teaching an old dog, new tricks, and my promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, the fairest promoter in boxing.

“I was proud to be the WBA champion twice and have the opportunity to fight 12 times for the WBA championship, the oldest and most respected organization in boxing. I’d particularly like to thank WBA President Gilberto Mendoza.”

Ruiz plans to move from Las Vegas back home to the Boston area this year and open a boxing gym in the inner city. “With my experiences in boxing,” he explained, “I want to go home and open a gym where **** will have a place to go, keeping them off of the streets, so they can learn how to box and build character. Someday, I’d like to see one of them go on to represent the United States in the Olympics. I want them to have the same opportunity to see the world that I had as an amateur. I’ve always tried to be involved in community and charity work in the past and now I’ll have more time to work with ****.

“Maybe, someday I’ll get into training, but right now I just want to spend time with my wife, Maribelle, and my *****ren. I wasn’t around as much as I would have liked for my two oldest *****ren, John and Jocelyn, because I was away training or fighting. Now, I’ll be around for them and my 3-year-old ***, Joaquin, as he grows up. I’m going back to my roots in Massachusetts, where a lot of my ****** and friends live, and look forward to helping young boxers avoid some of the bad things that I experienced in the sport but help them to experience the good times, too. Boxing is ****** but also beautiful. As I look back, I’m happy about my career, and my future is very bright.”

Pacquiao: A big possibility that I will fight Mayweather

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is on the campaign trail. Pacquiao*is campaigning*to land*a seat in the Philippine Congress. The elections are scheduled for May 10. Nine-days prior to the elections,*Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley will clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The biggest fight in boxing would pit Pacquiao against the winner of Mayweather-Mosley.

Mayweather is the favorite to beat Mosley, with Pacquiao's own trainer Freddie Roach backing him to win a unanimous decision. Pacquiao was asked by a reporter if*he thinks a fight with Mayweather could happen - should Mayweather win on Saturday*- and Pacquiao*wins the election. The Filipino fighter gave his answer, and said*there is a "big possibility" the fight will happen.*

“There’s that big possibility. My ****** wants me to retire from boxing; it’s 50-50 at this point," Pacquiao said during an interview in Manila.

While his ****** is*pushing him to retire,*Pacquiao says*a fight with Mayweather would probably be his last before retirement.

The fight was in talks earlier this*year.*The negotiations crumbled over the issue of random*Olympic-style **** testing.*Pacquiao's trainer Roach*had recently said in several interviews that he*was*pretty sure*the two sides would reach an agreement on the***** testing issue.

If Pacquiao wins the election, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, expects him to return to the ring in November. If Pacquiao loses the election, a return would happen in September.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Froch was robbed.

Not sure he was robbed, but the scoring was certainly ridiculous! I think it was Roger Tilleman who scored it 117-111, which is a joke.

IMO Kessler perhaps won 1 or 2 rounds, Froch was lazy and took for granted his champion status in the fight, he didn't box well enough or aggressively enough to win it or retain IMO.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

That should be 1 or 2 rounds more than Froch lol not overall!!!!!!

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

I think it was Roger Tilleman who scored it 117-111

Correct.

Guido Cavalleri 115-113
Daniel Van de Wiele 116-112
Roger Tilleman 117-111
