Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Roy needs to retire too, there's nowhere else for either one of them to go

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

That should never happen. Haye should be focusing on getting one of the Klitschkos now. Even Schaefer would rather have Hopkins retire than go after Haye

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Stylistically, BHop has Haye beat. Haye is limited, no inside game and a B chin. BHop is a master technician and would get inside. But youth, speed and stamina are against him-and they matter.

He looks shit against Roy, RJJ was just even further gone. Both should retire.

As for Haye, I reckon he can spark Wladimir-who has a chin shit, but would lose to Vitali. Long range jab and all that jazz. Late stoppage or UD in VK's favour.

Haye vs. Klitschko possible with Povetkin being paid off?

According to some of the*newspapers*in Eastern Europe, there is a big rumor*floating around that Alexander Povetkin could be paid*a "step aside fee" in order for a unification fight to take place between WBO/IBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBA champion David Haye.

Povetkin is the IBF's mandatory challenger and the next in line to fight Klitschko. Haye's boxing career*is now*partially guided*by Sauerland Event, who fully promote Povetkin. It is no secret that Haye and Klitschko want to fight each other. Klitschko said in several interviews*he plans to fight Povetkin next but could go in another direction if a fight comes along with Haye.

It wasn't clear on who would pay the step aside fee, Sauerland Event on behalf of Haye or Klitschko's side. Haye wants to return in October or November and doesn't see anything out there outside of a Klitschko fight. If*the plan*to get Wladimir*falls apart, older brother Vitali Klitschko has a title defense set for May 29 against Albert Sosnowski and might be ready to*fight again by the fall.

Pacquiao could return in September, Mayweather eyed

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum*was quoted by the Manila Bulletin as saying that*Manny Pacquiao could return as early as September if the right fight is made. Pacquiao's tentative return is going to fall in the month of November, but Arum says a September date could happen if the right fight is made.

A fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is at the top of the list, but only if Mayweather drops his demand for random Olympic-style drug tests. If he drops those demands, the fight can be made very easily. Mayweather has to get past Shane Mosley in May.

Arum said Pacquiao's other options, if Mayweather does not come to the table,*include Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, and even the winner of June's fight between Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foreman, who battle for the WBA junior middleweight title.

Evander Holyfield wants a piece of David Haye 'right now'

At Wednesday's final press conference for Evander Holyfield's fight with*Francois Botha, BoxingScene.com spoke with the three-time heavyweight champion to get his thoughts on David Haye's recent defense of the WBA heavyweight title against John Ruiz, who Holfyield fought three times."

Ruiz didn't hold. He fought which made it more exciting but he still lost," Holyfield told BoxingScene.com.

Holyfield would later tell BoxingScene that he wants a crack at Haye's title, and wishes he was fighting Haye this weekend at The Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

"He has a belt. I want the belts. I wish I could fight him right now," Holyfield said.

Carl Froch: "At least Kessler won't run like Dirrell"

WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch is not overlooking his April*24 opponent, Mikkel Kessler. The Danish former champion returns from a bad one-sided*decision loss at the hands of Andre Ward. Froch takes the fight in Kessler's home country of Denmark.

The Nottingham star will*attempt to get a knockout to pick up three additional points in Showtime's*Super Six Boxing Classic. He expects a very tough and physical fight. Froch finds comfort that Kessler will engage him in battle and not use movement like Dirrell, who Froch fought and won a close decision over*in the first stage of the Super Six.

“I know how much Kessler wants my title and yet I feel I’m really in my prime. At least Kessler won’t run all night like Dirrell, who stank the place out when I fought him.”

Steward: "Miguel Cotto cannot afford to lose again"

After taking a significant amount of punishment in three of his last four fights, former two-division champion Miguel Cotto knew it was time for a change. On Wednesday, Cotto officially announced one of the worst kept secrets in boxing, that he hired Emanuel Steward to replace Joe Santiago as the head trainer.

"I've always been one of his biggest fans, and although I didn't train him, I've studied him closely in all of his fights since his days as an amateur, so I know him pretty well, plus I've had a chance to talk with him and the chemistry has been good," said Steward.

Steward will work Cotto's corner on June 5 when the Puerto Rican star moves up in weight to challenge unbeaten WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman at New York's Yankee Stadium. Against Foreman, Steward believes "speed" - and not power - is going be the key to victory. To beat Foreman by knockout is not a mandatory requirement, but the veteran trainer does want Cotto to "win impressively."

Bradley vs Maidana agreement reached for June 19, HBO

BoxingScene.com has been advised by several strong sources that an agreement was reached for Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11KOS) to defend his WBO junior welterweight title against Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27KOs), the WBA's interim-champion,*on June 19 with HBO televising. The venue is being finalized and should be revealed in the next couple of days.

Bradley was originally scheduled to make his HBO debut against*Luis Carlos Abregu in a welterweight contest, and Maidana appeared to be on course for a showdown with WBC champion Devon Alexander in August.*Golden Boy Promotions and Bradley's promoter Gary Shaw were unavailable for comment.

Bradley: Maidana comes to destroy, but I'm ready

As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, an agreement was reached for Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11KOS) to defend his WBO junior welterweight title against Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27KOs), the WBA's interim-champion, on June 19 with HBO televising. Since our earlier report, BoxingScene was advised by Bradley that the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California is the frontrunner to host the fight.Bradley is regarded as one of the nicest guys in boxing, but on Thursday he was sporting a much bigger smile than usual*as he discussed the upcoming collision with Maidana."It's a great fight, a boxer vs. a puncher. I'm fighting another top fighter. I like to fight the best, everybody knows that. If I win this fight, it will put me in position for bigger fights....like Amir Khan, Devon Alexander or Mayweather, or Pacman, or somebody with a big name, and even Ricky Hatton if he decides to come back," Bradley told BoxingScene.com.

Bradley studied Maidana's decision loss to then champion Andreas Kotelnik in 2009, and he carefully watched the impressive knockout wins over Victor Cayo and Victor Ortiz.*After studying his style of fighting, Bradley respects Maidana's power, but also views the big puncher as being a*bit one-dimensional. He expects the same Maidana in June. If Maidana attempts to make it a war, and he will, Bradley may oblige him by accepting the offer.

"I just think he's going to come for me. He's going to be aggressive and he's going to press the fight. I'm going to be more of a boxer because of his heavy hands and use a lot of movement and counter-punching. But it all depends on what he brings to the fight. I bring two or three gameplans with me. If I have to fight him, I'll fight him. If I have to box him, then I'll box him."

Haye: If the Klitschkos don't happen, Valuev is possible

WBA heavyweight champion is open to the possibility of a rematch with Nikolai Valuev - if the the British champion is unable to get a fight with either of the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir or Vitali. Valuev has an outstanding rematch clause from their 2009 title fight. Haye wants to retire by age 31, with or without the Klitschko brothers. Haye turns 30 in October.

"If the Vitali and Wladimir fights don't materialize then there is an option where that could potentially happen [with Valuev]. But if it has to happen, then it has to happen. I believe if I fought him again I'd knock him out this time around. I know I can hurt him and I'd make sure I got to him earlier," Haye told Sky Sports News.

Arum: If Povetkin won't fight, Klitschko must face Peter

Bob Arum said today that IBF #2-ranked Samuel 'The Nigerian Nightmare' Peter is available and ready to take on world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Klitschko has not defended his IBF world title against a mandatory challenger since April, 2007.* Alexander Povetkin is ranked IBF #1 and is next in line.

"If Povetkin doesn't take the fight, Klitschko is obligated to defend against Samuel Peter," Arum said. "We plan to pursue that on behalf of Samuel."

Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler discuss their upcoming war

Super Six World Boxing Classic competitors Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler along with their promoters Mick Hennessy and Kalle Sauerland participated in an international media conference call to discuss their crucial Group Stage 2 bout in the tournament on Saturday, April 24 on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m., ET/PT, same-day delay) from MCH Arena, in Herning, Denmark.

Froch vs. Abraham set for August 21 in Nottingham

Arthur Abraham's third fight in*Showtime's Super Six Boxing Classic will come against WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch on August 21 in Nottingham, England. Froch has yet to complete his second stage*fight, which takes place on*April 24 in Denmark against Abraham's stablemate Mikkel Kessler.

Ward vs Dirrell: No budge on the fight location

There has been no progress in the Super Six venue dispute between promoters Gary Shaw and Dan Goossen. Their boxers, Andre Ward (21-0, 13KOs) and Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13KOs), are set to fight in third stage of the Super Six tournament on the tentative date of September 25.

The two promoters disagreed on the fight location during last Tuesday's Super Six promoters meeting in New York. Goossen wants the fight to take place in Ward's hometown of Oakland, and Shaw wants the fight to take place in Dirrell's hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

Legendary referee Mercante dead at 90

NEW YORK -- Hall of Fame boxing referee Arthur Mercante, the third man in the ring for the first Ali-Frazier fight and more than a hundred other world title bouts, has died. He was 90.

Mercante died Saturday at his home in Westbury, said Edward Brophy, executive director of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota.

Flags at the Hall of Fame were flying at half-staff Saturday, and 10-bell salutes were planned before Andre Berto's welterweight title fight against Carlos Quintana in Sunrise, Fla., and a Top Rank-promoted card in Las Vegas.

Mercante refereed 145 world title fights during his career, the most famous on March 8, 1971, when Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali in "The Fight of the Century" at Madison Square Garden.

Froch: I don't think I need to knock out Kessler to win

WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch is not worried about the officials in Denmark. He travels over to fight Mikkel Kessler on April 24 in the second stage of the Super Six tournament. Froch is confident the WBC appointed officials will do the right thing.

Mikkel Kessler: "I hope Froch doesn't underestimate me

Former champion Mikkel Kessler has gone back to his boxing roots. The favorite to win the Super Six super middleweight tournament was sidelined last November when Andre Ward dominated him on course to a techincal decision in Oakland. After suffering the second loss of his career, Kessler changed everything around in his training camp. He gets a shot at redemption before thousands of his Danish followers when he faces WBC champion Carl Froch on April 24 in Denmark.

Alexander Dimitrenko: "I will beat Audley Harrison"

The official challenger to the European heavyweight title, Alexander Dimitrenko, is already calling for his shot at the new champion, Audley Harrison. Dimitrenko (29-1, 19KOs) watched on the internet as Harrison (27-4, 20 KOs) knocked out Michael Sprott (32-15, 17 KOs) in the twelfth round to win the vacant Euro title at Alexandra Palace in London.

Erik Morales to fight again on July 24 in Mexico

According to reports in Mexico, former champion Erik Morales*has set a tentative date*for his next fight. Morales returned to ring as a welterweight on March 27 and won a decision over Jose Alfaro. It was Morales' first fight in over two and a half years. Morales is planning to fight again on July 24 in Mexico.* He doesn't know who the July opponent will be but he wants to fight at least three to four times in 2010. Training camp will begin in early May.

Pavlik: "What did Abraham, Sturm do at middleweight?"

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is tired of the critics going after him. He thinks he did more than some of the other middleweight champions in his era, like Arthur Abraham, who moved up to super middleweight last year and current WBA champion Felix Sturm. Pavlik says the critics go after him all the time and they rarely went after some of the other middleweight champions.

Miranda: I will steal Bute's before his fans

After what is being called ‘a perfect training camp’, Edison Pantera Miranda will be traveling to Canada on Monday to challenge Lucian Bute for the IBF Super Middleweight championship of the world.* The fight will take place on April 17th in Montreal, and HBO will be televising the action live.

“My training for this fight was as smooth as any fight I’ve ever trained for.* I’ve sparred more rounds and worked harder than any previous fight.* I am also more focused than ever before.* I have put myself in the best possible position to leave Montreal with the belt – both physically and mentally.”

Andre Berto, Celestino Caballero impress in Florida

Choosing to step out of a unification contest with WBA Welterweight titlist Shane Mosley in January to focus attention on the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, 26-year old ethnic Haitian Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO) of Winterhaven, Florida returned to the ring for the first time since May 2009, successfully defending his WBC belt for the fourth time with an eighth round stoppage of 33-year old former WBO Welterweight titlist Carlos Quintana (27-3, 21 KO) on Saturday night at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.* Both men weighed in a half pound below the Welterweight limit of 147 lbs.*

Berto was down at the end of a left hand before a minute had passed in the fight but referee Tommy Kimmons ruled it a slip and Berto complained it had landed behind the head.* The southpaw Quintana was calm before and after, leaning to his back foot and waiting for countering opportunities while Berto sought to move in and out with quick contact shots.* Berto complained twice more of rabbit punches and Quintana was warned after the round.* Replays did not clearly show a foul.

A long Quintana left pasted the face of Berto early in the second, pushing Berto off balance.* It might have been the cleanest blow of the round, though Quintana was the more accurate in a somewhat sloppy frame marked increasingly by clinches.

The more athletic Berto began to find his rhythm in the third and the frequent clinches were increasingly attributable to Quintana.* Berto’s left jab began to land over the right jab of Quintana and the lead left hook found contact.* A flurry along the ropes appeared to leave Quintana stunned but he stayed don his feet.* Quintana was warned again for rabbit punching in the round and, having punched Berto from behind after clinching and stepping around him, was deducted a point in the final thirty seconds. Quintana would again be trapped on the ropes as round four wore on, Berto digging to the body and bringing hard left hands to the head.* In round five, Quintana reduced to little more than efforts to hold, a Berto right hand left Quintana again dazed but the Puerto Rican weathered the storm.*
The fighters traded the advantage in rounds six and seven, Quintana working inside to improve in the former while Berto used right hands to command the latter.* The style clash kept the pace and tone of the bout uneven.* Berto’s speed and youth changed that in round eight.

Blood coming from the right eye of Quintana, Berto was in full attack mode from early on and two lefts, followed by a right to the face, had Quintana in serious trouble halfway through the round.* The veteran fought to survive even as he did little to fight back, covering up and seeking to clinch as Berto came forward with both hands.* Quintana escaped from the corner even as Kimmons looked ready to stop the fight.* Pursued by Berto into another corner, Quintana escaped yet again.* The third time proved the charm, Berto trapping him and connecting with a flush right that gave Kimmons the final rationale he needed to halt the action at 2:16 of round eight.

Having unified the WBA and IBF titles at Jr. Featherweight, 33-year old Panamanian Celestino Caballero (34-2, 23 KO), 125 ½, showed he’s going to be just as imposing at Featherweight proper, rising four pounds and all but toying with undefeated 22-year old Daud Yordan (25-1, 19 KO),* 125 ¾, en route to a dominant unanimous decision win.

The wispy, 5’11 Caballero began the fight with his long left jab and, fighting largely flat footed, peppered the 5’7 Yordan throughout the first, a steady flow of activity challenged by the occasional flurries of blows from Yordan.* Jabbing to the head and body, Caballero whipped in right hooks to the body in both the first and second rounds, following with leveraged rights to the head and snappy left hooks.* Fighting tall, Caballero was able to send most of Yordan’s blows sailing over and off his shoulders.* Yordan did manage a jarring left hook in the late stages of round two but Caballero took it without problems and sent Yordan to the deck moments later with a counter right uppercut as Yordan lunged forward.

Yordan beat the count and stepped forward for the start of the third, both eyes already showing signs of swelling.* Caballero popped him with a short left hook, Yordan answering with one of his own.* The Indonesian was game, cranking hooks to the ribs and just missing with some angrily intended right hands.* Caballero managed to stay a step or two ahead in terms of activity even if neither man was landing cleanly in abundance.

Caballero was landing more though and it stayed that way through the remainder of the first half, Yordan reduced to landing only token, if eye catching, left hooks while Caballero just beat a steady drum beat of leather upon him.* Round after round it continued, Yordan hopelessly behind and sinking with each passing three minutes as Caballero, appearing almost bored, stayed busy of hand while looking into the crowd and acknowledging people at ringside.* After eleven rounds, it was hard to find a round to credit to Yordan.

Yordan had a brief moment of thrill in the final round, a right hand preceding a wobbling of Caballero.* The crowd roared its approval but Caballero’s place in the ring told the tale, the real damage caused by slipping feet on slick ring paint at ring center.* The Panamanian quickly found his composure and the bout returned to form as Caballero coasted to a unanimous decision by scores of 118-108, 119-108, and a sweeping 120-107.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Berto is going to need a better trainer if he wants to be in the upper echelon. He still has major fundamental flaws in his style that will get him eaten alive by the likes of Mayweather, Mosely, etc...

You see Holyfield v Botha? :D

I reckon Haye sparks Wlad. Maybe loses to Vitali.

Kessler may beat Froch. Floyd UD's Shame, and Khan TKO's Malignaggi.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Haye has said after beating Ruiz that he wants the Klitschkos and Wladimir is the one thats wants him first so its going to happen and at last their is going to be a fight to look forward to in the heavyweight division.

haye will be somthing that Wladimir Klitschko has'nt fought before.

Im from England so i will be backing Haye of course but he will have to be at his best to beat them both.

Will be a good fight and an exciting one at that for a change and i hope it at wembley.

I heard Holyfield won a stoppage, but I didn't see it. I think both brothers beat Haye, but I will give him a better chance at beating Wlad. A good chance but not a great chance.

Floyd takes a SD over Mosley and Paulie gets the UD over Khan. Froch vs. Kessler is a toss-up to me.

Maidana injured, Bradley fight postponed

Argentina's power punching Marcos Maidana suffered a back injury, forcing his fight against junior welterweight titleholder Timothy Bradley Jr. to be postponed, Bradley co-promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

Bradley was scheduled to defend his 140-pound title against Maidana, who holds an interim belt, on June 19 at the Agua Caliente resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif., which is just a few miles from Bradley's hometown of Palm Springs.

"Maidana got hurt and the fight will be postponed for about a month," Shaw said.

Adamek dedicates fight to crash victims

NEW YORK -- Polish boxer Tomasz Adamek is dedicating his fight against Cristobal Arreola this month to those killed in the plane crash in Russia.

The plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and dozens of political, military and religious leaders went down while trying to land Saturday in dense fog near Smolensk airport in western Russia. All 96 passengers and crew aboard died.

"Fate took friends, people who I always admired," Adamek told The Associated Press by e-mail late Sunday. "Many people so important for my home country -- their families need us. They need compassion as they grieve."

Adamek was born in Zywiec but now fights primarily out of Jersey City, N.J. The former cruiserweight champion will fight Arreola on April 24 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif., in his third fight since moving up to heavyweight.

Andre Berto diagnosed with biceps tear

Welterweight titlist Andre Berto suspected that he had torn his left biceps in either the first or second round of his defense against Carlos Quintana on Saturday night in Sunrise, Fla., and it turned out that he was correct.

Berto told ESPN.com that he was diagnosed with a tear in the muscle Tuesday after seeing his doctor in Winter Haven, Fla., and undergoing an MRI.

"But my tendons are still intact as they can see," Berto said. "So I am gonna have to ice it and rest for a few weeks so the swelling can go down [and] then start rehab."

Berto (26-0, 20 KOs), who had been icing the arm since he knocked out Quintana in the eighth round of his fourth title defense, said his doctor told him he needed six to eight weeks to recover.

Pacquiao's return date depends on election outcome

According to reports in the Philippines, the return of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will depend on the outcome of upcoming May elections. Pacquiao is going up against Roy Chiongbian for a congressional seat in the Sarangani province of the Philippines.

If Pacquiao wins the political race, he will return to the ring in November and begin training in the month of September. If Chiongbian wins, Pacquiao will return in the month of September and begin training in the summer.

Some of the opponents in the running are Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, the winner of the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight in May and the winner of June fight between Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foreman.
