Ring Legends From PR, Mexico Turn Out for Salido-Lopez

The proud nations of both fighters are rallying behind their guys, as evidenced by the superstar turnout for Friday’s weigh-in. Modern day ring legends from Mexico and Puerto Rico from both sides were introduced to the stage in support of this weekend’s headliner, which airs live on Showtime from Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Joining Salido (37-11-2, 25KO) on the scale was a current Hall of Fame legend in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., along with two future candidates in Juan Manuel Marquez and Jorge Arce.

As admiring as was the scene of Salido being flanked by some of the best fighters in Mexico’s rich boxing history, the room’s biggest applause naturally went to the Borciua legends on hand.

Lopez, attempting a third title run in hopes of regaining his belt from Salido, was proudly joined on stage by future Hall of Fame stars Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad and Ivan Calderon. Many on hand took note of Trinidad’s fit and trim physique, as the legendary former three-division champ has been known to let himself go during retirement.

Orlando Salido (126) and and Juan Manuel Lopez (125.75) made weight for tomorrow's rematch. Showtime will televise, in addition to Azteca (Mexico), Main Event (Australia), and Sport 2 (Hungary).

Other news:
Kelly Pavlik is back on March 31, against Aaron Jaco in a 10-round bout.

Erik Morales wants to fight four times this year. He faces off against Danny Garcia on March 24 (HBO). He hopes to fight again in June, September, and possibly December.

Marco Huck has informed the WBO he will return to cruiserweight to face mandatory challenger Ola Afolabi. Huck previously defeated Afolabi in 2009.

Tax officials in the Philippines have filed a criminal complaint against Manny Pacquiao for failure to submit documents to investigators looking into his tax returns. Prosecutors will now decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to court, where Pacquiao could face up to two years in jail if convicted.

Ricky Burns won in a walkover (W 12) over Paulus Moses earlier today.

Salido vs. Lopez II begins on Showtime at the top of the hour. Leading off tonight will be featherweights Mikey Garcia (27-0, 23) and Bernabe Concepcion (30-4-1, 15) followed by the main event.

Top Rank officially filed a federal lawsuit in the state of Nevada against Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16KOs). The promotional company is seeking to recover damages due to an alleged "breach of contract" by Gamboa.

Gamboa, moving up by two weight divisions, was scheduled to fight Brandon Rios (29-0-1, 22KOs) on April 14th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

However, Gamboa no-showed last week's press conferences in Miami and Los Angeles - and he refused to move forward with the fight, citing differences with his promoters Top Rank and Ahmet Oner of Arena Box. As a result, Rios will now face WBA interim-lightweight champion Richard Abril (17-2-1, 8KOs).

HBO was scheduled to televise Rios-Gamboa, but the network took a pass on Rios-Abril. Top Rank is currently working on a television deal. Junior welterweight Mike Alvarado will still collide with Mauricio Herrera in the co-feature.

BoxingScene has obtained a full copy of Top Rank's lawsuit, courtesy of boxing attorney Scott Shaffer. We outline the fine points of Top Rank's case against Gamboa. Certain points are full copies of Top Rank's claims, while other points are BoxingScene's shortened versions of the claims.

1. "However, upon information, Top Rank believes one or more rival boxing promotion companies and unknown individuals associated with them are at the root of Gamboa's wrongful conduct. These 'poachers' see what everyone sees -- a gifted boxer platformed by Top Rank for superstardom-- and they want to unfairly capitalize on what Top Rank orchestrated and built. Upon information and belief, the rival promoters and others promised Gamboa that if he breaches his contract with Top Rank, they will promote his fights."

2. "Gamboa signed with Ahmet Oner of Arena Box in February 2008. In June 2009, Top Rank and Arena reached an agreement to co-promote Gamboa, who contemporaneously executed a written attestation consenting to, ratifying and confirming the execution of the aforementioned between Top Rank and Arena and agreeing to be bound by all the terms and conditions thereof irrespective of any prior agreements with Arena."

3. "In February 2012, Top Rank and Gamboa reached an agreement for a fight with Brandon Rios on April 14, 2012 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas."

4. "Top Rank and Arena satisfied Gamboa's request to receive "four times" his contractually guaranteed minimum [for the fight with Rios]. "

5. "On or about February 16th, 2012 - Gamboa and Top Rank agreed to all material terms of a contract to fight Rios - including date, opponent, travel arrangements, purses and advances."

6. "After agreeing to fight Rios, Gamboa requested, received and accepted in excess of $70,000 in advances from Top Rank and Arena in anticipation of the Rios bout."

7. "After reaching an agreement, Top Rank negotiated into a contract with the Mandalay Bay, entered and negotiated a contract with HBO, negotiated and entered into contracts with multiple international television broadcasters, entered into contracts with sponsors, entered into a contact with Rios, made financial and other commitments to undercard fighters, prepared and publicized tickets for the event, and sold thousands of tickets."

8 . "In comfirming his agreement to fight Rios, Gamboa specifically requested a press conference to be hosted in his hometown of Miami, Florida to promote the event. Top Rank and Arena agreed to arrange the press conference on March 5th, 2012, including securing an appearance by Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Top Rank and Arena spent thousands of dollars on travel and other arrangements to honor Gamboa's request."

9. Up until March 5, 2012 - no objections were received from Gamboa.

10. "Without warning, Gamboa failed to attend the Miami press conference on March 5, 2012 and his March 6, 2012 press conference in Los Angeles."

11. On March 5, 2012, Gamboa informed Top Rank that he had "no desire" to fight Rios on April 14th and "no longer wishes to be promoted by Top Rank or Arena."

12. On March 12, 2012, Gamboa repeated - this time in even more stark and unequivocal terms - that he "will not be fighting Brandon Rios on April 14, 2012" The fight, he wrote, "is simply not going to happen." Gamboa added that he "wishes to sever all ties with Top Rank."

13 . "Gamboa's unexpected repudiation of his agreement to fight on April 14 jeopardizes millions of dollars in contracts involving broadcasters, venues, other boxers, sponsors and many others."

News this week:

Julio Cesar Gonzalez, former light heavyweight titlist, died this past weekend in a motorcycle accident. He was the first to defeat Dariusz Michalczewski. Other professional opponents include Roy Jones Jr., Tavoris Cloud, Clinton Woods, and Glen Johnson. In 1996, he represented Mexico as a member of the Olympic team. Gonzalez finished his pro career with a record of 41-6 (25). He was 35.

Mikkel Kessler’s bout with Robert Stieglitz is now off. The fight was originally scheduled for November 5 of last year when Kessler injured his hand in training. The hand, apparently, is still injured, making the proposed date of April 14 an impossibility. Stieglitz will face George Groves instead on that date. Kessler is looking at a return of May 19, against an opponent who will be announced next week.

Selcuk Aydin and Robert Guerrero will face off on July 28th for the interim WBC Welterweight title. Showtime will televise the bout. It is said that the winner will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the full title.

Jermain Taylor will continue his comeback, against Caleb Truax on April 20. Showtime will televise. Taylor began his comeback on December 30 with a stoppage against Jesse Nicklow.

Rising contender Peter Quillin will face Winky Wright, the former undisputed super welterweight champion. There was an attempt to place the bout on the undercard of Mayweather vs. Cotto, but instead it will take place on May 26 as part of the undercard for Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode.

Juan Manuel Marquez will return on April 14, against Sergey Fedchenko of the Ukraine. The bout will take place at the New Mexico City Arena, which opened in February. Marquez has not fought in Mexico City since 1994.

The British Boxing Board of Control has revoked the license of Dereck Chisora. Promoter Frank Warren may appeal the decision.

The WBC has announced that negotiations for Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will begin next week, if Martinez can get past Matthew Macklin this Saturday. According to WBC President Jose Sulaiman, negotiations begin on March 19. The two sides will then have a month to agree to a deal before a purse bid is held.

Eloy Perez, who was knocked out in four rounds by Adrian Broner on February 25, failed his post-fight drug test. Perez tested positive for cocaine, and his license has been revoked pending a hearing.

Abner Mares and Eric Morel, who will face off on April 21, will now fight for the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight title. The previous titleholder, Toshiaki Nishioka, requested and was granted the status of “champion emeritus.”

Omar Nino Romero has a fine pending with the NSAC. Until the fine is paid, the WBO will not sanction his trilogy bout with Brian Viloria. That bout is set to take place on March 31.

A purse bid has been scheduled for the rematch between Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi. The purse bid will take place March 21.

The rematch between Wladimir Klitschko and Tony Thompson is also up for a purse bid. It has been scheduled by the IBF to take place on March 27. The purse bid split will be 85/15 in favor of Klitschko.

Juan Manuel Lopez has been temporarily suspended by the Professional Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico. The commission has also ordered Lopez to appear for a hearing on March 26. Lopez was also suspended by the WBO and was given until Friday to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt why he shouldn’t remain suspended. The suspensions are the result of the comments Lopez made during a televised post-fight interview. Lopez said that referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. had gambling problems and that the stoppage last weekend was related to a bet that was made.

Guy walks into Herbie Hide's house...

...and now he's dead.

A man was fatally stabbed during a private party at the Norwich home of former world heavyweight boxer Herbie Hide, police have said.

Officers were called to Long Lane, Bawburgh, at 00:07 GMT after reports that a man, thought to be in his 20s, had been assaulted.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 00:45. A murder inquiry has started.

Police said the stabbing followed an argument or dispute. More than 100 people were at the party at the time.

Det Supt Julian Gregory, of the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said police were "fairly certain" Mr Hide was not on the premises at the time of the stabbing.

"He may have been there during the course of the evening, we are not sure, but at the time of the incident we think he was elsewhere," he said.

Antonio Margarito back on June 2 and September 15?

According to former champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27KOs), there are plans being discussed for two fights in the coming months - including one on June 2 in Ciudad Obregon, and another in September in the United States.....possibly on September 15th in Las Vegas, with some form of a world championship at stake - which happens to be the same date and location for a planned middleweight clash between WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and mandatory Sergio Martinez.

Margarito, 34-years-old, was considering retirement after experiencing problems with his surgically repaired eye during last December's TKO loss to Miguel Cotto. He saw several doctors who gave him positive feedback and the necessary confidence to continue his career. Margarito doesn't have any idea as to the indentity of his June opponent.
