Is MMA safer then boxing ?

how many ufc MMA fighters do you hear about dieing in the ring or from fighting injurys .

MMA hasn't been in the mainstream for a long enough period of time to truly determine how dangerous it really is.

Most serious sports injuries occur after the athlete has stopped playing or participating in their respective sport, years after their retirement. In football, offensive lineman get severe back and neck problems, but usually after an extended period of retirement time. In baseball, catchers get severe knee problems, but usually after an extended period of retirment time. In boxing, boxers get severe head and brain problems, but usually after an extended period of time.

Since MMA hasn't been around for all that long (in the mainstream, where it is popular with a large portion of the population), there isn't a good way for people to determine how truly dangerous it is.

15 years isn't a long time for a sport to be around. When you compare it to other mainstream sports in this country (US), it's still a baby.

MLB - estbalished 1876 (133 years)
NHL - established 1917 (92 years)
NFL - established 1920 (89 years)
NBA - established 1946 (63 years)

UFC - established 1993 (16 years)

To be fair, MMA wasn't popular right away either. It wasn't until the late 90's that people even started to pay attention to it and take serious interest in MMA as a sport. So, it's only been popular in the mainstream for 10 or so years now, which isn't a long enough period of time to establish a solid idea as to how dangerous the sport truly is.

however, the older ufc matches were a lot more no-holds barred, so if people were going to be dying it seems like it would have been happening then.
