A book is a personal thing for me, I lend DVD's and games etc but have a rule never to lend books unless you're willing to just give them away as a gift. On the plus side the local market keeps thousands of battered old paperbacks so I try not to pay full price anyway :)

in Canada we go to something thats referred to as "The Library" they have this concept where people can choose a book (from a selection of thousands) and then check ity out and read it at home. The only downside is that we have to bring the book back to the library when there fuckers at the library think we should be done reading the book.

Fuck it... I am a slow reader and can never finish the book on time, plus I get interrupted regularly so I have to make a trip back to the library and check it out again

what pisses me off the most is if all the copy's are rented and there is another person who reserves the book, and then I cant finish the fucking thing

I don't know if I should believe you or not. I'm going to need a second-opinion...

The rapid-transit system in my area actually has a book rental station at a few of its stations. That way, people can check out books to read during their commutes and return them at the end of the day or when they finish them.

If you have a large group of friends that buy a lot of books you could always use the system I have seen used. Whenever one of them wants to read a book the other has he lets them just "permanently borrow" it until some other person in the group comes along and does the same thing. After a while a bunch of books have been spread around and read by the group. Of course the downside it trying to keep track of what book is where.
