Being overweight

I've actually got the reverse problem. I'm totally underweight just above 8 stone, i've never really been that worried about it untill recently, when i started noticing in pictures just how skinny i was.

I guess as long as your comfortable with the way you look it's not that big of a problem, it's only when it's at the extreme levels where there is a problem like health wise IMO.

:dito:

I'm just below 8 stone and always have been. I've had stomach problems for some time now so don't each much but sometimes when I can eat I pig out on crap and never put on a single pound or end up weighing less :dunno: Last time i saw a dietician she showed me a list of fatty foods to avoid and told me I should eat more of these to get my weight up. Also annoying is when I go to the hospital and get weighed the nurse will always say 'I wish I was like you' when they see my weight and I'm thinking this is a serious medical condition  Mind you I love being thin and there are far more problems that stem from being overweight than underweight, the key is the battle against food. Because of my stomach issues I kinda hate food and can easily miss a meal and settle for a nutritional drink instead and trust me you don't need 3 large/6 small meals a day to live as I can survive on 1 along with 3-4 nutritional drinks a day. Go on a liquid diet ( I'll link one below) and combine that with exercise and maybe the weight will fly off, other than standing (at work) I haven't done any exercise in well over a year and still weigh under 8 stone and my recent blood tests (A to Z) show no problems watsoever.

This thread really helped me. I have lost 25 pounds although i have found it very hard. I will reply more to this thread throughout the day as right now im busy. But i really appreciate all of this

Stayin' away from the boxed mac and cheese?

I'm at like 200 right now, like 25 overweight, but I know I'm gonna lose it quick. Glad you had success with the pointers here.

A lot of great advice in this thread. Glad to hear about the weight loss. I give credit to anyone trying to get into better shape, fitness has been a part of my life for just over 19 years. It is all about staying consistent.

Good lord, some of you guys are small. Eight stone is about 114lbs(48kg) correct? How tall are some of you guys? Not trying to be rude or anything but it is hard for me to imagine myself at that weight. If I weigh anywhere near 200lbs(about 91kg) there is a serious problem. I am only 5'11(about 1.8m) and currently weigh 237lbs(107.5kg). However, according to my physician, 206 of those pounds is solid body mass(bones, organs, muscles, etc.) At my heaviest I was about 285lbs(129kg). Dropped that weight(football weight as I like to call it) about 3 years ago.

Until I saw my physician every friggin chart labeled me as grossly over weight. The point I am trying to make is that it is a really good idea to go and see someone to correctly assess your body. Everyone is different thus their bodies need different things. You might end up following some really bad advice like I was and may wind up hitting a plateau without any idea why.

That's because if you weighed 8 stone when your pretty much 6ft you would have serious problems.

I myself am only about 5ft5 maybe 5ft6, my ideal weight is about 9 1/2 stone, so i'm only about a stone underweight.

It all depends on your height, i mean at 6ft i would have thought your ideal weight would be around 14~15 stone ( around about 200~210 pounds ), but i at most, would only want to weigh about 10~11 stone ( 140~150 pounds ).

Yeah, that is what most of the charts I was reading put me at. There isn't a problem with me weighing that much, but my gripe was that sometimes they don't take somethings into consideration. Back when my gut was hanging over my belt line I just blindly tried to drop nearly 100lbs. It worked for a bit but then I hit a plateau a little over half way to my goal. Confused the hell out of me because I wasn't expecting that until my last 15 or 20 lbs. In any case, just wanted to throw that out there for anyone who is a novice at losing weight(I only knew how to gain lol). Go see a physician to assess your body or if you are lucky you can just go to your local gym for an analysis.

The problem with most charts (and doctors, though they're not extensively trained in this, so it's not really their fault) is that they go by BMI (body mass index) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index, which is much different than body fat percentage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_fat_percentage.

Someone like a bodybuilder can have a large BMI number, but not necessarily be unhealthy. Measuring one's body fat is much more accurate, but again, most physicians aren't trained how to do so, so it's easy to mistake muscle for fat sometimes.

I'm a personal trainer, I had to learn all this stuff.

(I only knew how to gain lol).

I could probably do with a few tips. I mean don't get me wrong i feel comfortable as i am, it's when i look at photos that i notice how skinny i am.

But i really think it comes down to the individual and what they feel comfortable with. As long as your happy i suppose it doesn't really matter.

Like wigster about 5'6. Like you can't imagine yourself at 8 stone I could never imagine mayself hitting 9 stone let alone anything higher. It's never happened in my entire life and probably never will, when I don't eat much my stomach goes completely flat and when I do eat (normally crap) it naturally gets larger and rounder yet the weight remains consistent. Let me sum it up like this, last time I saw my consultant he said great news you're making progress you've put on 2kg! :1orglaugh

Woukd anybody finally switch to the metric system? It ain't like 1800 no more :)

Metric system dates back to 1790 so that won't help. Its problem is that it isn't intuitive. The Imperial system (refers to the Roman Empire by the way!) developed to suit the everyday needs of people. I used the metric system right through my career and I still don't feel comfortable with it. And I'm sure many others don't either because I see it used incorrectly so often.
Even after several decades of being officially metric parents still want their babies weighed in pounds and ounces and my son when working on a building site in Germany was surprised to find that people were always referring to feet , admittedly a 300 mm foot but it indicated a need for an intuitive measure.
To be pedantic the weights and measures system in Europe is SI , which is a modified version.

I'd rather die than use the metric system and at my funeral I want my body weighed in pounds and my coffin measured in feet and inches

I find that nothing tastes as good as being thin feels, but to each their own.

Although, I'm pretty sure Ulysses is being a tad facetious (aren't you from the UK?), I'm going to have to go ahead and say "Amen!" to both of these statements.

I actually sell things in metres in my store (legal requirement) but the customers always ask for things in yards (36 inches) and inches so we try to label items in both cm's and inches or have to convert their requirements in yards to metres. You always get some miserable old granny come along and if I tell them a price by metre they start complaining that they only know yards and don't understand anything and then they end up talking about the war and rationing or moaning about young people.
