Batwoman is gay.

Just seen that Batwoman is to return as an openly gay super hero.DC Comics writer Greg Rucka said she was "a lesbian socialite by day and a crime fighter by later in the night"
Apparently she returns to Gotham just after Batman is killed in November.

Hmmm.

I don't read comics but one about an openly gay woman sounds interesting. Of course I'm openly gay too so maybe she can give me tips and hints on how to live my life.

"Where does she get those wonderful toys?" would be the next question that comes to mind.
LOL Yes, even though I'm a girl who doesn't read comics, I've seen the movie and I crack myself up.

and this one is for Blue Balls....

First 1 !

They change things in comics all the time.

Take a look around and main characters like, Spiderman, are not homosexuals.

This isn't the original Batwoman either. It all depends on who writes the comic. I don't see any reason to bring "political correctness" into comics.
I don't read them to see society reflected in the stories.

I love Greg Rucka, but the man has lost his mind. Well I gotta hand it to him for going balls out and in a direction that may drive his readers running for the hills.

I'm not just talking about this idea, but moreso his writing lately.

I can't even keep track of all the superheroes anymore. Always figured Wonder Woman would be the first (or at least the most famous) to come out of the closet though.

I guess it makes sense to explain why she never hooked up with batman. everyone just assumed that he was gay.

If Batman and Wonder Woman got together, it might actually inspire me to pick up a comic book. That'd be a pretty interesting pairing. Sadly, all I've seen so far is the oh so boring Superman/Wonder Woman pairing. Seriously, could it be any more vanilla than that?

But Wonder Woman being gay is no stretch. Comes from an island of all women with an ancient Greek culture, where same-sex relations was not only accepted but rather common, plus a negative impression of men (though less so over time)... Sounds like an ideal candidate to me.

I think it's a good idea to have a gay role model in comic books, there are a few on TV so why not comics and maybe video games too? There aren't many role models for people who are gay or bisexual, I'm best friends with a lesbian couple so I wonder how they will feel about a gay comic book character.

This idea will have fanboys waiting with baited fingers for the inevitable lesbian hookup. :)

I find it odd that people look to superheroes for role models. By their very nature, they are beyond what you can hope to accomplish. Well, most of them, anyway. Batwoman would presumably be a normal human, so that'd be sort of okay I suppose. The non-powered ones are still capable of some pretty impossible stuff though.

I was thinking the same thing.

13 year olds and probably the older fans are going to love this.

But I totally admit I have no idea about comics, so I might be wrong. Comic book readers might all be ultra-conservatives :dunno: If a bunch of spotty teenagers and 40 year olds start protesting outside comicbook stores with signs reading "God Hates Fags". I will be proven wrong. :D

It is a good idea to have gay role models. So long as you are doing it for the right reasons and not just for sensationalism or political correctness.

Again, not knowing much about comics, but isn't sensationalism and the sex appeal what sells them? I'm pretty sure that there is no thought about political correctness behind this idea of having a gay woman super hero. They are trying to sell comics right?...I doubt seriously someone thinks there is a great untapped source or demographic not being reached and that this will do it and the 9 more readers they get will make their quota.
I have a feeling only more pre teen boys and those at heart will line up to read what they think are the thoughts of people like me.
Strong role models of gay women aren't going to be found in comics when it's obvious that the target audience is reading mostly for the T and A ....sorry just one "dumb blonde's" opinion.

Now for shits and giggles....I'll read about the life of a super heroine drawn right who loves to take women into her bed.............

But I'd be reading it for the T and A. LOL

Yeah, I remember when they introduced her a few years ago and they announced she was a lesbian, everybody wanted to see what was up, but the whole lesbian thing kinda ran along side and nobody really carred. I don't think many writers know how to pull off a lesbian without it coming off too sexually.

For starters they could get a lesbian to write it or contribute so they don't sound so....mantryingtobewomanish.......
Of course I don't even know what being gay would do to contribute to such things....what issues cross over from everyday life to being a super heroine?

She really needs new batteries for her vibe so she 'orbs' some over from the local store?

How about a story where she can't do her job the right way cause she's descrimiated against for her sexuallity or that now all of the sudden the public views her as a sex object instead of a real person...course given how she dresses...........may already be the case.
Does she have any women nemisises (sp?) that she can 'turn'?

Well writer greg rucka is known both for his portrayal of strong leading females (such as the series queen and country about a woman spy who works for london's MI6) as well as realism (such as his series about the Gotham City PD), so if anyone could pull it off I'd say he's the right one.

i thought it was batgirl ?
Batgirl and Batwoman are two different characters that aren't related to each other. The original Batgirl was Barbara Gordon, police commissioner Gordon's daughter, but the role was later taken up by other people, including, I believe, the daughter of the Huntress.

edit: actually I was off. I guess the first Batgirl was Batwoman's neice, but she was shortlived, and Barbara is the best known representation. And it was actually the Huntress herself that had a brief appearance in the role, not her daughter. I was confusing her with the current Batgirl, I'm not really sure what her story is.

While theoretically I have nothing against a lesbian comic book character, I can only hope that this is something that isn't that big of a deal in the comic and is something that just organically happened. Usually in fictional work whenever there is a homosexual person they always tend to focus more on that or exploit it more then they should either, just to do it, as a cheap means of drawing interest, for shock value, or because somebody is on a crusade to prove some sort of social point.

I have a feeling like everything else it will probably be used as a gimmick to get people to try and read it. Which is sad and makes a joke out of the situation. (Now that I think about it, it shares a lot of similarities with interracial porn in that respect.)
