Just reading some of the comments here is motivating me to go back to the dojo pretty soon. I did aikido for a few years but quit a couple of months after getting the good ol' black belt and I've haven't gone back at all since around 2008 or so. I still remember most of the techniques. I used to enjoy teaching when the instructor was out sick or something but nowadays I don't think I'd feel comfortable teaching since I haven't practiced in quite a long time. I have never used it in real life though and I hope it stays that way.

you should go back... its great exercise. in my opinion, most martial arts are just that... art. one of the greatest instructors (and people for that matter) told me that hes not giving me the answers to dangerous situations, just creative options.

Yes, I'm a master in CQC.

I'm trained in the cardboard box technique. ;)

As for me yes I am rather well trained in hand to hand. If you want to watch videos just go to youtube and search for hand to hand techniques according to whatever form you want to learn. This is the internet.

i understand what you mean but in this case, the gi is important for a couple of reasons.

for instructing purposes:

1) respect of tradition.

2) the looseness of a good gi allows for punches, kicks, techniques, all in free movement. jeans do not work. sweatpants are hideous. yuck!

3) the snap. oh the snap. the snap of punches and kicks when you do them in a gi is not only satisfying but its a great way to gets your student to perform them correctly. if they arent snapping, they are doing it wrong. its a great way to show them what you are looking for.

4) it just feels right. you look good. you look official. you look important. especially for newbies, they need all the inspiration they can get to keep going.

heh, yeah, in a bar fight and ****, hell yeah i get what you are saying. *****+sweat+no shirt = greased up pig.

the techniques we used and that i liked most didnt involve the gi. it was mostly formed off blocks and counter-attacks.

in my sisters normal class, they did use the gi to mimic a ***** on the lapel (i think thats what its called? collar?). im not a fan of gi holds since no one wears a gi when you are in a real life situation. and shirts in real life, they just tear.

arm bars and **** require only their arms and wrists, no gi needed!

and my famous leg sweeps. those have got me out of a few of jams in real life situations.

I've done an extensive variety of martial arts over the years. I started out at fifteen with the ATA. Realizing that I could get really hurt if I tried to do a jump spinning hook kick outside of the dojang I figured I should probably learn some other stuff. I trained in Tracy Kenpo for a while, Shotokan Karate, Isshin Ryu, two separate stints with WTF, USTF, Shen Chuan, and probably a few others I've forgotten. Most of it was informal stuff, but I do hold rank in a few.

Yes
I got a black eye.
Then some guy asked me to hit him in the face at a bar,
and he got a nice shiner but I ran off because I thought
his friend was going to stab me.

asked you to? well, then he deserved it. what a maroon...

I am formally trained to give a nice kick to the nuts if being attacked...also a stiletto to a mans ass hole works wonders...

... i find the stiletto comment particularly funny, as theyd have to already be in a prone state to deliver such a blow, whether they deserved it or not... :rofl2:

aikido is great. that and judo and hapkido are very realistic. they can actually help you in real situations.

thats why people use wooden swords. im using a cold steel blade. its amazingly tough plasticy ****. it can break a white oak bokken, crush bricks, all that. and you wont slice your own head off.

True, ***** combat training can be useful too, my two cousins who were in the us army and usmc were trained with the kabar and the mark2 dagger. A friend of them was trained in machete and axe combat. Another friend of them trained in Tae Bo, the sport invented by Billy Blanks, it combines the best of tae kwondo and kick boxing
