Aviation "Porn" - For those who like Airplanes

The most known aircraft before the F4 Phantom II during the vietnam war, the F105 Thunderchief known as the Thud

The best sounding F-14B/D Tomcat demo on YouTube, still the most impressive plane I ever saw in person (20 different airshows attended, also got to see the F-14A version). You felt the roar of the engines in your chest, wish these were still in operation. Also appropriate that it's at Miramar complete with the Top Gun soundtrack.

I'll also add in legendary F-14 pilot Dale "Snort" Snodgrass putting the classic A model through it's paces in 1986. Probably the best sounding A demo on the net and Snort does some amazing maneuvering (nearly hitting the ground at one point.)

This is a sad day:

30 years ago, on the Ramstein Air Base, a tragic air show display accident killed 70 people, and marred many more

Wow, I remember seeing that on the news when it happened. Hard to believe it's been 30 years already.

F-15E Strike Eagle action in the UK:

The F15e is one of the best modern jet fighters ever made. But let's not forget that the Russians have the SU35BM

I remember being fascinated with all the frontline Russian fighters of the day (MiG-25, 29, 31, Su-27/35), the Sukhoi family always looked the best.

This is the Snort performance where he almost hit the ground. I wonder what the RIO was thinking at 1:06?

I hope I get to see the F-22 in action someday. All the hassles of insurance since 9/11 and the 2005 X-Team disaster (I was at the performance the day before) have made the airshows in my area dissappear.

Well the Su 35 has several advantages over the f15, f16, ef18f, f35, Rafale, Eurofighter, Gripen and Mitsubishi F2 such as:
-thrust vectoring nozzles and hyper manoeuvrability (no f15, no f16, no ef18f, no rafale, no eurofighter, no gripen, no f2 and no f35 can perform the cobra). The Su-35 is powered by a pair of Saturn AL-41F1S, formerly known as izdeliye (Product) 117S, turbofan engines. While based on the AL-31F engine of the Su-27M, it shares some of the core design of Su-57's more-powerful Saturn AL-41F1.The aircraft is equipped with thrust-vectoring nozzles, which has their rotational axes canted at an angle, similar to the configuration on the Su-30MKI and Su-57. The nozzles operate in one plane for pitch, but the canting allows the aircraft to produce both roll and yaw by vectoring each engine nozzle differently. The Su-35's thrust-vectoring system and integrated flight- and propulsion-control systems allow the aircraft to attain "supermaneuverability", enabling it to perform post-stall manoeuvres at low speeds. This differs from Western air combat doctrine, which emphasises the maintenance of a fighter aircraft's kinetic energy. The engine gives the Su-35 the limited ability to sustain supersonic speed without the use of afterburners. According to Carlo Kopp of the think tank Air Power Australia, such a "supercruise" feature allows the Su-35 to engage an opponent at a greater speed and altitude and increases the range of its long-range missiles by 30–40 percent. He cites the aircraft's mature airframe and carefully-balanced combination of advanced technology as allowing the Su-35 to achieve a favourable exchange rate against the F-35 stealth fighter. A RAND Corporation study in 2008 found that the Su-35 could shoot down 2.4 F-35s for every aircraft lost.

-Su-35 employs the powerful N035 Irbis-E ("Snow Leopard") passive electronically-scanned array (PESA) radar, which is a further development of the N011M radar that had been evaluated on Su-27M test-beds and constitutes the core of the Su-35's weapons-control system. It is capable of detecting an aerial target up to 400 km (250 mi; 220 nmi) away, and can track thirty airborne targets and engage eight of them simultaneously; in addition, the multi-function radar is capable of providing high-resolution images of the ground using synthetic aperture mode. For defences against enemy tracking, the Su-35 is equipped with the L175M Khibiny-M electronic countermeasure system, while engineers have applied radar-absorbent materials to the engine inlets and front stages of the engine compressor to halve the Su-35's frontal radar cross-section and minimise the detection range of enemy radars. The multi-role Su-35 can deploy air-to-air missiles of up to 300-kilometre (190 mi) range, and can carry the heavy Oniks anti-ship cruise missile, as well as the multitude of air-to-ground weaponry

-Missiles: K-74M2 (izdeliye 760) comparable to the Aim 9X, asraam or the Python 5 missiles,
K-77ME (izdeliye 180-BD) exceeding 193 miles of range above the AMRAAM120d, PL12, Meteor and Astra missiles
Novator KS172 awacs killer missile nearly 200km of range,
Kh-31 , it is capable of Mach 3.5 and was the first supersonic anti-ship/anti radiation missile that could be launched by tactical aircraft
The su 35 might not be stealthy but it is a nightmare for the ennemies who might encounter it.

The other day outside my house, watched a peregrine falcon chase down a crow which was cawing in terror. The other crows were just hanging out not caring like "sucks to be him." Was surprised how small the falcon was compared to the crow.

Falcon... crow.. so would you bet on the tiny falcon/apache longbow or the crow/ MI26 transport hind?
First thing that pops into my head when I read your post. Although in my mind, the RAH66 Comanche is what I think of with the small bird-of-prey motif`, the Apache is more well-known so there ya go.

Everything is multi-role, these days.. so it is kinda hard to really choose a favorite chopper or plane. I guess..

WW1: Sopwith Camel.

WW2: For pure effectiveness? Spitfire, Mustang, 109.
For AWESOME factor? The 262. First real jet plane, EVER?! Dude, sign me up. 'Lightly feather the throttle, or stall.. your choice. And.. listen to that roar'

Modern era: Obviously the Kiowa, A10, F4 and maaaaaybe a stealth plane. But their purpose limits their effectiveness. Not to bash on single-role planes or anything.

This would also make one hell of a metaphor.

Ace Combat 7

getting this next month on Xbox One X.

:sing: highway to the danger zone

The danger zone being my couch kicked back in front of the TV.

My grandparents house is near a military airbase. It's underneath one of the flightpaths and with the structure being so old the entire house shook every time there was a flyover. They complained to the government and instead of changing the flightpath they paid for structural fortification and soundproofing renovations. As a kid I loved visiting since I could go outside and see all these planes up close.

Anyways, on topic, I think experimental/prototype WWII are sexy.

The Kyushu J7W1 Shinden (not to be confused with the Shiden) is a great example.
Yes, that's a real Japanese WWII plane which the US took after the war and is stored away somewhere in the Smithsonian storage closets. The day the restore & display it I'm getting a ticket to DC.

tvtrip, were you the one on here that was stationed at Kadena AFB in Okinawa? Can't remember, sorry.

I used to layover there and would watch the F-15s and F-16s take off. Cool story.

No I was never stationed there although it would be a neat experience for sure.
Okinawa is a paradox though, a real life "Can live with them, can't live without them" situation as the locals both need and hate the US forces there. Literally they want them out ASAP, but the economy would nosedive if they did.
In any case, with China & Russia being more brazen though you can bet the US bases in Japan aren't going anywhere soon.
