Wow, way to live in the present. When was the last time he adopted a British accent, 1965 for Mary Poppins? I was thinking of Elijah Wood and Madonna.

One explanation is it related to when you bought ale "on the slate" and it was time to settle your bill.P's and Q's were references to pints and quarts.

That's about as close to correct as possible, I think.
