Sharapova: she is falling apart (her game), but she is nice looking;)

I don't dispute that some of the Founding Fathers were suspicious of religion or that the Constitution they chose to model the US Constiution on was secular in nature (I believe they chose Massachusetts, if I remember correctly).

Great.

What I do take issue with is that the period prior to the Constitution America was not a religious land and that this period is meaningless to you.

Also, the Articles of Confederation were the first national document and were based on a "higher power."

Those religious laws were supposed to be wiped void by the decidedly secular intent of the Constitutional period. No-one denies that America was a country full of religious people both prior to and during the Constitutional era. What I'm saying is that, in spite of that there was an intentional effort to rid theocratic elements from government during the birth of the America that we know today. They saw a way to be a both religious and secular at the same time - something which appears to be a source of confusion for too many today.

Saying the Articles of Confederation were based on a 'higher power' is a gross exaggeration. All they state is a tiny prayer to an unspecified deity figure (it could mean anyone from Jesus to the Ancient Egyptian sun-god Ra) for the success of the project they were embarking upon. However, the Articles of Confederation were abrogated by the United States Constitution. They are an interesting historical document, that's all. They do not describe the nature of the America of today any more than the Laws of Burgos codified by Spanish settlers.

You also don't give any merrit to states rights, which is wrong on your part because obviously states rights are very important - abortion and homosexual rights are obvious signs of states rights and the role of the federal government.

As the judges in those Supreme Court cases explain, this isn't about the right of states to formulate their own laws. It's about the idea that all states in America should retain a secular nature, should guarantee freedom of religion to all citizens, in order to prevent mini-theocracies springing up all over the US.

With all the rain that seems to happen at Wimbledon every year, why don't they think about building some sort of retractable roof over some of the courts? (Of course making them play in the rain could also be fun.)

I just got back from a week in the UK (from the US) and thought of this thread. I actually do have a few questions that came about during the trip:

1. Where did all the hot women come from?

2. Why is everyone seemingly so nice to everyone else?

3. Why do you silly Brits (Europeans in general actually) seem to do most things far more efficiently than we do here in America?

4. Why don't most of your ATMs charge a fee to withdraw your own money?

5. Why are there hardly any "rubbish bins" around but also hardly any loose "rubbish" lying about?

6. Why do you not eat the obscene portions like we do here in the US?

7. What did you do with all the fat people?

8. Since so many of you use cash as your primary means, what do you do to create personal credit misuse issues in your country?

9. Why don't you people take yourselves so seriously and act like you are the most important person/people in the world?

10. What the hell is "Rarebit?" (I assumed a pronunciation of "rabbit" but wasn't sure)

11. Why do you use "English" units (miles, yards, pints, etc.) in some applications but metric in others (meters, kilos, etc.)?

12. Why do you seem more sexually liberated?

13. Why do you actually seem to be able to separate religion from government?

14. Why do you actually have a multi-party system that actually lends weight to more than just two major parties?

It has been about 25 years since I last traveled to the UK. This was my wife's first trip. She remarked that a lot of stereotypes that we Americans have for the UK are completely wrong and then was pleasantly surprised at how much better some things actually are over there vs. here.

On more than one occassion she remarked "Didn't we try to get away from these people back in history b/c of _____, and now look how we are the ones that have the issue with that in our own country and yet over there they seem to actually have shit straightened out and fixed?"

Enjoyed our stay. Thanks for the hospitality. See you again soon. :wave2:

I just got back from a week in the UK (from the US) and thought of this thread. I actually do have a few questions that came about during the trip:

1. Where did all the hot women come from?

Eastern Europe

2. Why is everyone seemingly so nice to everyone else?

It's only a veneer of niceness, underneath we're a seething cauldron of resentment

3. Why do you silly Brits (Europeans in general actually) seem to do most things far more efficiently than we do here in America?

We have regular tea breaks (always accompanied by biscuits), consequently we have a permanent sugar rush

4. Why don't most of your ATMs charge a fee to withdraw your own money?

Is first rule of socialism "appear to allow proletariat access to their money (whilst stealing it from them through taxes)"

5. Why are there hardly any "rubbish bins" around but also hardly any loose "rubbish" lying about?

Because we are all socialists, we employ lots of people to clean up after us

6. Why do you not eat the obscene portions like we do here in the US?

We're tyring our best..

7. What did you do with all the fat people?

Narrow doors, they can't leave their houses

8. Since so many of you use cash as your primary means, what do you do to create personal credit misuse issues in your country?

We borrow money against our houses to get the loans which we convert to cash to buy the beer to enable us to binge drink and become Europe's number 1 sluts.

9. Why don't you people take yourselves so seriously and act like you are the most important person/people in the world?

We lost an empire which covered 1/3 of the world. Compared to our ancestors we are chronic under-achievers. We're painfully aware of that.

10. What the hell is "Rarebit?" (I assumed a pronunciation of "rabbit" but wasn't sure)

Anything to do with Wales is a mystery to all of us.

11. Why do you use "English" units (miles, yards, pints, etc.) in some applications but metric in others (meters, kilos, etc.)?

Due to our levels of binge drinking, most of us only attend school until we are 13. The metric stuff we learn at school, the imperial we got from our parents, how much metric someone has, is a measure of how much schooling they've had

12. Why do you seem more sexually liberated?

Binge drinking

13. Why do you actually seem to be able to separate religion from government?

The Church of England is the homeopathy of religion (mantains the appearance of the original but with no actual content) therefore it's easy to keep it out of government

14. Why do you actually have a multi-party system that actually lends weight to more than just two major parties?

Oh, that's just an anachronism. For all useful purposes we have a two party state, unless you live on the edges of the country it's still a choice between Tory and Labour

Glad you enjoyed your trip - come again soon - Please !!!

1. The result of Celtic and Viking genes, so we have hot blondes, hot brunettes, and hot everything in between.
2. A lot of Brits would say this is geographical, so depends where in Britain you are. You must have missed the assholes :) But also Brits like the Americans.
3. Its good to hear that's your perception from your trip, not sure many Brits would agree.
4. Most of them are free, they have to say when you withdraw your cash if there's going to be a charge.
5. Again could be geographical, some towns and cities make a big effort to keep it looking clean especially for tourism.
6. Its good to be hungry for more!
7. Export them to the USA :D
8. I'm not sure about that, I use a bank card for most purchases, although use cash for a night out.
9. We like to take the piss out of ourselves, being very polite its to save anyone else the bother :)
10. Basically Cheese on toast, best with some Worcester Sauce.
11. Kinda came from decimalisation in 1971 and joining the EU. there's been arguments about how much we should comply with EU regulations, but we've ended up using bits of both systems.
12. Its amazing what a large volume of alcohol can achieve :)
13. It wasn't always separate, Henry VIII created the protestant Church of England and split from the Catholic Church. The we had the English Civil War partly because KingCharles I had married a Catholic. Oliver Cromwell a Parliamentarian won against the Royalist armies and KingCharles was charged with treason and executed. Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector and the Royal family was removed but later re-instated. Since then Parliament has no religious representation, and we see the church and politics separately.
14. We do have pretty much a 2 party system, Labour and Conservative. We have the 3rd option, Liberal Democrats but there hasn't been a Liberal government since 1916 :)

Hey, why do americans ask so many questions? :1orglaugh

1.) Why did you elect Mr Brown in the first place?

2.) Are you not concerned that more and more EPL teams sell out to American and Arabian tycoons?

3.) Will England take home The Ashes this year?

1.) Why did you elect Mr Brown in the first place?

He wasnt elected, he just took over when Blair stepped down.

2.) Are you not concerned that more and more EPL teams sell out to American and Arabian tycoons?

Not really, but I suppose if you ask an actual football fan they might have a different opinion.

3.) Will England take home The Ashes this year?

I doubt it, but who knows .... again, actual fans may have differing opinions on this :D
