As much as I love Scotland and hate England, independence is stupid

It's probably a bad idea. You just have to look at Ireland as an example. Independence sounds quite good on paper but when i comes down to it, i imagine we will suffer. As everyone says. "Why can't Scotland be a nation on it's own". But if you think it through, one thing which would really hurt, is the economy. We would probably have to join the Euro(just look at how well that's doing. We would be the Portugal or reece of the north.

You could possibly call the economy thing either way. It's a tough call. If we were allowed, i would vote for the increased powers. But at the moment, i see it as an economic non starter

If you gave every group of people who wanted their own country their own country there would end up being 1000s of countries around the world, I think Britain would gladly part with Northern Ireland if it wasn't for the Unionists/Loyalists. In any case in this global world it almost doesn't matter which country you can live in, in the EU you can pretty much travel, work and live in any country you want. Where I live in London I doubt even half the people were born here yet they are free to live/work here whether they are British or not, they don't even need to be able to speak English!

Some people are too used to living under the thumb of the English government and have had it drummed into their skulls that life without being a part of the UK would be a bad thing. Yeah, bad for the English government, for they wouldn't be able to leach off of our income and oil. As soon as all the oil dries up there wont be a debate on the matter. Nope. The English government will just hand Scotland it's independence because they will have fucking drained a vital income of all it's worth and there wont be much left of worth to them anyway. The English government is too scared to let go and be "all alone" Northern Ireland Wales and Scotland don't belong to England and they never will. They are not British they are their own nationality. The English government labels them as British because they want to own them. England is Britian no one else. This isn't the colonial days of old anyfuckingmore!.

I don't get why Ireland or Scotland would want independence. Both are small countries and do far better being apart of the UK.

Historically it's always boiled down to religious afiliation and alegiance to the crown, nowadays neither is that important in peoples everyday lives, without the whole protestant/catholic thing as well as the royal family (the two go hand in hand) I don't see why there couldn't be a union between England, Wales, Scotland and the whole of Ireland.

If the Scottish people want to seperate I say good luck to them after all you voted in a the SNP who clearly stated this as one of there plans didn't you? So for the majority they are getting what they orignally want, not counting the fact that the 'for' independence polls are down by 32-38% at the moment. Why does Salmon want to wait until 2014 for this just so he can go all Brveheart to the nation ..please? Surely if he and his party believed in it strongly enough he would hold a refferendum asap before the polls slip further down or if the economic situation gets worse. I can not see how delaying this until 2014 is of any benefit to Scotland at all? Time to think? Well surely the Scottish people have had pleanty of time to think things over i.e. since the SNP were elected?. On a side note and jokingly of course if Wales and Northern Ireland departed too there wouldn't be all the bullshit for a GBP football team at the Olympics after 2012.

I think it's a bigger topic just now because of the conservatives. Scotland hates the tories, especially after Margaret Thatcher the milk snatcher.
Scotland has always hated the tories

I think if we get the increased powers it will be good but i think we also need England. We'll still be a separate, just one that works with England. It's true that the Uk is just an English term though. If someone asked me where i was from, i'd say Scotland and not the UK. England includes Scotland when things go bad in the Uk, but when things are good, there is no mention of us.
UK riots as an example. I didn't see Wales or Scotland rioting, it's not the UK then. They didn't change it to England until they were called out on it

England should hold a referendum in 2013 to see if we still want Scotland in the union, then we won't have to see any of their dodgy money ever again. We could also rebuild Hadrians wall, he must've foreseen all these problems down the line

Most people voted SNP because Labour got us into this mess and Most Scottish people won't be caught dead voting for the tories. Plus SNP offer more than just independence.

Also i'm fully against team Gb, what bullshit that wil be. There will be one or two Scottish players and a couple of Welsh ones like Bale. The team will just be full of English players. It would be better if it was separate. Then Scotland could finish last while England get kicked out at the quarter final stage:1orglaugh

Probably true, though you guys gave a better team than us at the moment Capello is making us play woefully

every country deserves a shot at independence you just got to hope that their economy can cope

The English should get out of Ireland. Then if they decide to retreat further, that is their call.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
As I understand it Scotland IS independant but manages to use it's official status as non-independant to make a LOT of money from England.
However, should it emerge that I am wrong (it may be possible) I would say let Scotland have her independance. There's no reason that England should drag Scotland down with her.

Out of curiosity OP, why do you hate the English, apart from the fact they're a load of hypocritical dumb shits?

Also out of curiosity, what do the various people here from old states of Empire or states that are currently part of the Commonwealth think of the wish of the Cornish for independance?

Rattrap

Doesn't feed trolls and would appreciate it if you
I was mostly of the opinion that independence was a bad idea for the same reasons as a few have already listed; divided economies and all that. With the Prime Minister deciding he'd stand up to defend the institution that...you know, crashed the economy anyway...against every other EU country, I'm second-guessing. I know I'm looking for my independence of the UK now, so I can hardly blame Scotland...

Inconsequentially, the island that makes up Scotland, England and Wales is technically Great Britain - and therefore those three can all be considered British (what I mean to say is, historically and geographically as well as currently legally). And although I wouldn't go so far as to call an Irishman British, the whole area is geographically called the British Isles...

There is no such thing as an English Government, it is the UK Government. There are Scottish, Welsh Northern Irish Parliaments (or assemblies), but there is not an individual English one. The parliament in London has members from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and so any "English" law can be voted on by these countries. The opposite is not true. There are no English MP's in the Welsh Assembly or the Scottish or Irish parliaments.
The British Isles consists of the single island comprising England, Scotland and Wales, plus Ireland and the numerous other small islands surrounding the mainland.
