Are there any downsides to a Lightsaber?

Considering it makes a bright light and an audible hum that is distinct it would nearly impossible to have it ready while you sneak up on somebody.

I remember this from when I was a star wars nerd: If the jedi dude doesn't make it correctly, it'll explode or something when he tries to use it the first time. Ouch.

When ya watch these you,ll most probley agree that the Golf club retrevier is a much more devastating Weapon, and did you know it can be actually used as a double bladed lightsaber

was this kid showing off that he has some kind of jedi skills and is "imaginarily" using a lightsaber?
on the one where he walks in the 2nd time when he slams his leg with the thing.i don't remeber any Jedi cutting off their own limbs with their own saber.

When I made mine in Knights Of the Old Republic, it was BadAss!
The only downside was it was to heavy and my arms got tired, but then I upgraded to wielding TWO of them - smaller, lighter and great to twirl.
The Twi'lek chicks dig 'em.

Okay, I must add my 2 cents in this dead thread.

First cent, there is an element named Cortosis that disable a lightsaber's blade during a few minutes. it was sometimes used during the clone wars, but was very fragile. Most of the time, it was used in alloy, but it was just able to block a lightsaber.

Remember this: in the Star wars universe, there is only 3 elements that can resist to a lightsaber:
- Cortosis Alloy. used during the clone wars and in Knights of the Old republic.
- Phrik alloy. the farting canes of grievous' bodyguards was in phrik alloy, but the best use was in the Dark Trooper project, as seen in Dark Forces.
- Mandalorian iron (or mando-metal) the best of all. light and resistant to everything known, Mando-Metal is used for every Mandalorian Armor. Jango & Boba Fett, Jaster Mereel, Jodo Kast, Monstross and every other mandalorians have their armor in Mando-Metal.

Second cent, beware of guns. if you carefuly look at the Imperial heavy repeater, you will see that it fires Metallic slugs, but they can be reflected by a lightsaber. So be careful.

Personally, I suggest you to use sonic guns: they can disturb the force and prevent a Jedi from using its force powers. then use a flamethrower to finish him.

Finally, the order 66 have done most of my work...

Let's just go ahead and say that a .50 cal to the forehead from 150 yards will pretty much end your theory.

good post queer (odd name. heh) you get some nerd points, er rep for that one.

I always got the impression that the energy form the lighsaber created a (magnetic?) field within the beam that reacts to elements. In other words it has the properties of a solid object, not just a light wave. Case in point it's abilty to deflect laser shots and other labersabers.

the lightsaber is pure energy. it's just like plasma. it doesn't give off a heat, and thefor doesn't melt anything. it just "cuts" through stuff because most anything that comes into contact with the dimensions of the beam will dissipate.

as for the above stated reason a traditional projectile would be neutralized (read: completely annihilated) by the lightsaber. certain elements cause the lightsabers energy to be nuetralized and it reacts as if it was the same energy source and so it can't penetrate them. this why making armor or plating out of this material is good for defense against a saber. I don't think that a projectile made out of this stuff would be very effective though, because it would simply just withstand from being destroyed by the lightsaber, not penetrate it. it would still be deflected.

a person using the force could block attacks using it and also has the abilty to sense threats so they could react to them and respond by blocking or attacking using the lighsaber. remember luke agaisnt the sim droid and the deathstar with his eyes closed? as far as I know it never mentions anyone who is not a force user performing with a lightsaber. I also get the impression that using the force might be neccesary for the basic functioning of a lightsaber in the first place.

I think that they are effective against virtually any personal weaponry, and surely are at least as advatagious as anything else. a lightsaber might not help much if the deathstar or sun crusher is blowing up your planet, but then nothing will at that point. the only real downside is they are kind of hard to build. the crystals that are neccesary to making them work are hard to find. it can take up to a year to make one, and the task of doing so is what qualifies an apprentice to become a jedi knight.

Ok..I've waited for a thread like this....

I've done a lot of studying, a lot of pondering, and a lot of philosophizing on this topic, and I can say, without a doubt, that there are NO downsides to having a lightsaber, ever.
