Arctic sea ice shrinks to record low

"WASHINGTON - There was less sea ice in the Arctic on Friday than ever before on record, and the melting is continuing, the National Snow and Ice Data Center reported.
"Today is a historic day," said Mark Serreze, a senior research scientist at the center. "This is the least sea ice we've ever seen in the satellite record and we have another month left to go in the melt season this year."

""It is very strong evidence that we are starting to see an effect of greenhouse warming," he said.
The puzzling thing, he said, is that the melting is actually occurring faster than computer climate models have predicted.
Several years ago he would have predicted a complete melt of Arctic sea ice in summer would occur by the year 2070 to 2100, Serreze said. But at the rates now occurring, a complete melt could happen by 2030, he said Friday.
There will still be ice in winter, he said, but it could be gone in summer."

Just more evidence of the climate change and its happening faster than even the computers predicted.

How can you post a thread like this when Brittany might have to pay for that fender she smashed into? Or when there is an ongoing thread about your penis size?

Excuse me, UR penis size :jester:

Is this good or bad?

Is this good or bad?

In base terms....the ice caps melt, water levels rise around the globe, and the coasts of every continent get "re-drawn," to say the least. For the U.S., specifically, it means Florida shrinks, New Orleans disappears, and Texas's coastline moves inland about 2 miles. It means serious devastation in the coastal communities that were devastated by the Tsunami. Remember that swelling up of water? It just rushed inland and flooded those communities...with all the seawater being created from melted ice and with all the earthquakes we normally get around the globe...there will be more flash, devasting flood events like the Tsunami..it will take less severe earthquakes to generate that Tsunami effect rush of water...

What it also means, weather speaking, is this new water becomes "warm," eventually, and acts as gunpowder fueling tropical weather formation...which means, a substantial increase in the NUMBER and INTENSITY of hurricanes...

I think there will be sporadic flooding in places like Massachusetts and California. It won''t be as severe as what will happen in Florida and the Gulf Coast.

To see accurate, academic projections, pick up Al Gore's book "An Inconvenient Truth"..there are some photos in that book which are savagely frightening as to where water levels will go in America...even if you hate Al Gore, it doesn't mean his book is bunk...

Excellant post IMO. Where I live in NJ may very well be under water if Ice caps disappear,as well as Manhattan Island which is not far.

So it's bad?

Yes. We have beach economies that will be ruined in the short-term. Some countries will be ruined for years...it means major global devastation.

I don't swim that good so I would say it would be bad.

Ok sorry no offense man wasn't sure if you were trying to be funny. But seriously yes any rapid change thats caused by human activity is almost certainly going to be bad.

Come on guys. Now what’s more important, the quarterly profit of energy firms or some stinking ice cap in the middle of nowhere? The market will take care of all our problems if the government would just get out of the way. Some where an entrepreneur is thinking up ways to profit from raising sea levels and make our lives better. It’s an opportunity for the go getters of the world. It is our divine right and duty to exploit the earth and its resources. If the conditions get too bad God will rapture the rich to heaven as they are manifestly the best among us. So you better get rich or learn how to swim.

It’s not news, It’s Fox news.

Not only that but polar bears will start to die off as their habitat disappears. Worse is the fact that on a global climate level the entire planet is interlinked with each other. The less snow and ice there is the faster the planet will heat up because it doesn't reflect as much light into space. That means everything that can be affected by global warming (which is almost every aspect of every part of the Earth's climate) will be by this. This will increase the speed at which previously fertile land becomes drought ridden and unusable. Previously normal climates might be affected by increased flooding in them like never before. Animals will have a harder time surviving because they can't adapt to the conditions, people included. Ocean life will be affected because the type of water and temperature they live in will be chanced. There is a good chance that new ocean currents might pop up or other ones might be shut down by the change in temperature in the water. Ocean levels will rise, which will screw over places like Bangladesh. There isn't really anything substantial that is good about it over the long term.
