And I thought I was hot shit... or a hot shot

Years ago, I took down a wild boar with a .45 Magnum pistol (open sights) from roughly 40 yards. Within our hunting party, that was the shot of the day by far, especially since I was crawling on my stomach to get the shot. But this dude... A British sniper has killed a senior ISIS fighter with a 'one in a million' night-time shot from nearly a mile away.

that's funny, I read this on newsweek this morning:

Sniper Shoots ISIS Fighter Dead From More Than a Mile Away With 40-Year-Old Gun

By Jason Lemon On 8/12/18 at 10:55 AM

British soldier from the elite Special Air Service shot and killed an ISIS commander from more than a mile away, in what is thought to be the best long-range shot in the regiment’s 77-year history.

Using a a huge .50-caliber Browning machine gun that was nearly 40 years old, the unnamed sergeant, a veteran of Iraq and Syria, managed to hit the fighter directly in the chest with a shot that blew off the commander’s arm and shoulder.

“The Islamic State commander was briefing his men, and clearly liked the sound of his own voice because he was standing still for a least 20 minutes while his fighters sat on the ground in front of him,” a source familiar with the incident, which took place in June in Afghanistan, told The Daily Star Sunday.

“It took several seconds for the round to hit the commander, who appeared to fly into several pieces. For a few seconds no one moved. When they realized what had happened, they got up and ran away,” the source explained.

According to sources familiar with the operation, the sergeant had to take into account the wind speed and the heat of the day, as well as the intense light. The view of the target was described as “quite watery” through the gun’s scope, due to heat coming off the ground.

“The .50-cal has got a phenomenal range and is very accurate even though it is almost 40 years old,” the source said. “It can be fired on single shot. The sniper fitted a special sight to the machine gun and got a spotter to estimate the wind speed.”

According to Metro, the patrol unit had other sniper rifles but believed the decades-old gun would be the best option for hitting the target. To commemorate the impressive shot, the gun has been flown home and decomissioned, the publication reported.

It was described as the best long-range shot in the British unit’s history. But a Canadian sniper set a significantly longer record last year.

In June 2017, the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that one of its snipers had shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history, at a distance of 3,540 metres (2.2 miles), The Globe and Mail reported.

"The Canadian Special Operations Command can confirm that a member of Joint Task Force 2 successfully hit a target at 3,540 metres," said the forces in an official statement. The unit was operating in Iraq, and the target was also an ISIS militant.

Range + wind + heat/cold + gravity + velocity decay.
Gun experience + firing thousands of rounds + intuition + 2 men who know whatthefuck they are doing

40 yards? You could have thrown the b.ullet that far and hit it. With a .45 Long Colt you could have bagged it at 100yrds easily with open site. As far your OP, for a 50 that's an easy shot with good optics. I'll give it to the guy tho for a night shot. Very good shot ;)

I'd choose that over a wild boar hunt any day of the week. My days of crawling around in the brush on my tum-tum to shoot Wilbur the pig are behind me.

I was supposed to go to Knob Creek several years ago, but couldn't make it. I'd be down with that though.

:banger:

Been there twice, I believe it was '06 and '07. I had planned on making it an every year thing but my Uncle I went with passed unexpectedly and haven't been back. A great event tho and nothing but a big party....WITH GUNS!!! ;) Let's hear it for alcohol and firearms LOL!!! On my last visit I got to meet R. Lee Ermey which was really cool. He was just as bad ass in real life as in his films. I would encourage any gun lover to go at least once.

I still have it on my bucket list. Several auto races are ahead of it, but it's in the Top 10.

The first year I went was actually unexpected. Spur of the moment kinda deal. My Uncle called one night and asked what I was doing. I says "shit, I'm bored. Come get my ass and get me out of the house". He came over and said "get a bag, let's go". So I did, I shoved my bag of pot in pocket with some rolling papers and we left. An hour down the interstate I ask where were headed and he says "Kentucky for the weekend". At this point I'm pissed because he didn't say we were leaving state. All I had was the clothes on my back, wallet and a bag of pot wtf?? The closer we got the more I DIDN'T want to go, thinking staying home would have been the better option. Man, I'm glad I went and if you ever get the chance-GO!!! It was such a great time. They even have vendors there that sell machine guns. I think you have to possess some kinda federal firearms permit to purchase one but it was still cool to pick up and hold one. I got to shoot the classic M60 @2 bucks a round but probably the best money I've ever spent. That 30 round belt was fast but TOO much fun. Again, If you can ever check that off the bucket list, do it!!! ;)
