Americanisms

I will take English speakers in the UK more seriously when they can say "aluminum" the right way.

It was the British Empire that caused the language to go global.

Does that mean we can blame you when we call customer service for some corporation and get an Indian guy that doesn't know what they are doing? :1orglaugh

Contrived controversy brilliantly presented by MrT to get everyone from the USA all riled up. Good job.

Otherwise, I might could say that I reckon that all y'all sissy-talkin' Brit motherfuckers can just go ahead and go on and go fuck yerselves. That, however, would be quite rude and uncouth and not at all the gentlemanly thing to do, wouldn't you be inclined to concur? :dunno: ;)

Yes, how quickly they forget that they'd be speaking German if not for us.

The USA has made English a global language. It's only natural that some of our idiosyncrasies would catch on elsewhere.

should be- Yes ,how quickly they forget that they'd be speaking German if not for the RUSSIANS.

The same thing is happening here, only the opposite. That is;born and bred Americans using slang from the U.K. to try to sound cool. It pisses me off.

We should just go ahead and make them two separate languages....American and English. There's enough differences between the two to warrant a distinction.

If you're going to take it that far you would need to take it a step further.

Both are actually so different from where English originally began that they both shouldn't be considered English anymore.

A few weeks ago I had some guy come up to me and literally say "Sup my brother can I get a what-what?"

I have never come so close to comitting a hate crime in my life.

Ever consider someone might be trying to be a joking? One of my best friends and I always joke around with stupid shit like that - because it is so effin stupid.

No one is speaking English as it was hundreds of years ago, so how can anyone say one dialect is more 'correct' than another?

Saying 'Americanisms' don't belong in the UK, or that any terms or phrases don't belong anywhere other than their region of origin is like criticizing someone for their accent.

Some Americanisms I hate:

Nooks and Crannies--when describing English muffins. They're "bread holes" for God's sake!!
Tee Time--When describing golfing, it confuses me, because all of a sudden I want to sip from a little, old lady's cup while nibbling on some crappy biscuits.
Vacation Time--The time when your employer lets you take days off to go away and have fun. Not to be confused with holidays like Christmas, New Years or Halloween. You can also throw in Independence Day.
Cigarettes--Betcha know what I'm thinking!!
Film Developer--I'd use the term "chemist," but that refers to Charlie in 12G who stays up late filling a lot of little cylinders up with...film powders.

who cares, languages are always changing and they always have been...people talk different in different areas, even different towns have slightly different speech patterns and slang phrases...big deal, i actually find it interesting how people from different regions speak the same language so differently :dunno:
