Danica Patrick to retire from motorsports
Danica Patrick to retire from motorsports
I'm happy that we can FINALLY say goodbye to the most overhyped, underachieving auto racer of our time. With only one professional auto racing victory to her name, over roughly 20 years of professional level racing, in more categories than I can count (from formula cars to sports cars to stock cars), the person who relied on her gender and her appearance (as opposed to ontrack results) to make a name for herself, is heading for the exit. And I say, good riddance! Unlike most women (and every man) who earned their accolades by winning races and championships (Shirley Muldowney and Angelle Sampey to name two), Danica was more prone to taking a Top 5 car and peddling it across the line in 10th. Or in the case of NASCAR, a Top 10 car and finishing in 25th. But by being auto racing's version of a Kardashian, she became one of the highest paid and recognized faces in racing.

How does Lily Allen's song, The Fear, go?
And I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
'Cause everyone knows that's how you get famous
I saw Danica race in Toyota Atlantics way back when she was just getting started in North America. And the general consensus was that she had loads of raw talent and an aggressive style that should win her races going forward. But then, after she draped herself across the hood of a car in a bikini, DanicaMania was born and she became more concerned with her Q-rating, rather than developing her racecraft. According to people I knew at Rahal Racing back then, she lacked the ability (or desire) to understand car setup - so other people had to do the heavy lifting for her. So she had nothing more than that one win and some decent results in the (weak at that time) IRL. In NASCAR, that lone Daytona pole was pretty much it. But her handlers and PR people still worked their magic to make it seem that she was
just about to set the racing world on fire - never happened. And her nerve in suggesting that she was thinking about going to F1! Other than buying a ticket to a race and sitting in the stands, there was no place for her in F1. She didn't have (and couldn't get) a superlicense, so she couldn't have raced in F1. Only in her mind, and the minds of those who didn't know the rules and requirements in F1, was that fantasy possible.
I don't dislike Danica because she's a female racer. I know and like a lot of female racers. I dislike Danica because she did have raw talent that she never worked to refine, and she didn't seem to want to become
anything more than an oddity with long hair and a fat paycheck. When has anyone pointed out Lewis Hamilton's race when speaking about his massive accomplishments? When has he EVER relied on, or even mentioned his race as an issue? He's not just the first Black F1 champion, he's the first Black F1 racer, period. But in his case, it's nothing more than a small sidenote. One thing I like about auto racing is that the car doesn't know or care if you're male, female, White, Black, Gentile, Jew, straight or gay. And if your
only claim to fame is that you are the most accomplished person in some subgroup, that doesn't count for anything, IMO. Only in this time of "identity politics" are you anything special. But it would be my hope that little girls would see someone like Simona di Silvestro (
just a race car driver) as a role model, and not a grand-stander like The Danica (a
female race car driver).
So, Danica, be gone! Glad that Penske isn't going to waste an entry by putting you in at Indy or Daytona. If you can find the money, maybe Ganassi will. But hell, for enough money (and a free trip through the buffet line) Chip Ganassi would put me in a car.
