Alicia Keys: 'Gangsta Rap' Created to Convince Black People to Kill Each Other


NEW YORK — There's another side to Alicia Keys: conspiracy theorist.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist."

Keys, 27, said she's read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead," according to an interview in the magazine's May issue, on newsstands Tuesday.

Another of her theories: The bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing."

Keys' AK-47 jewelry came as a surprise to her mother, who is quoted as telling Blender: "She wears what? That doesn't sound like Alicia." Keys' publicist, Theola Borden, said Keys was on vacation and unavailable for comment.

Though she's known for her romantic tunes, she told Blender that she wants to write more political songs. If black leaders such as the late Black Panther Huey Newton "had the outlets our musicians have today, it'd be global. I have to figure out a way to do it myself," she said.

The multiplatinum songstress behind the hits "Fallin"' and "No One" most recently had success with her latest CD, "As I Am," which sold millions.

They sold their own into slavery.

I can't remember who but on Jay Leno a few years ago someone said they blame the telephone for slavery.
The slaves couldn't, or the ones or sold them into slavery couldn't call back and tell what was going on.

I doubt the leaders who sold their own people into slavery would have cared to talk to them.

I don't know how many black people you've been around but black people do listen to music like Alicia Keys in the hood. You are correct that the majority of the money comes from whites but you're ignorant on the fact of who listens to her music. While we're at it it's the same with hip-hop music, the majority are whites not blacks.

Next order of business, Hedonis is correct on Africans selling slaves to white slave traders for America but whites weren't the only slave masters that had slaves. Blacks who were freed in America also owned slaves and had property. Let's not forget that generations before that Egyptians own Hebrew slaves. There have been slaves throughout the test of time and they weren't always black, there have been slave masters throughout the test of time and they weren't always white. Through discussion and listening to different view points, we can curb ignorance. It may never go away but we can at least try to lessen it.

I was joking with that comment about the fact that much rap music is either political, or at least a social commentary on what black urban life is like, which alicia key's music is not. so I think her criticism and her attempts to be political are a little bit off base.

as for the whole african slavery thing... how do you define "most of"? I'm sure that there were many different situations and conditions that contributed to the slave trade.

I said slavery and mass murder by one "race" against another on the basis of racial domination. You can't say that that applies to africans in that situation.

You might say it's the same thing and has the same effects so the reasoning behind it doesn't matter, and that might be true or not... But it's not what we're talking about, i'm not really talking about the effects of slavery. I'm talking about the act of racism.

In contrast, the never asked question regarding slavery is: how did the slaver ships get their cargo? Because it was not white Europeans rounding up blacks on the African continent.

Watch the 'extras' from Tears of the Sun... a black soldier trying to help the black villagers makes some quip to a villager about life in America not being great... that his ancestors were slaves. & the villager, who owns only the clothes on his back, answers, along the lines of 'if they hadn't been slaves, you could be me.'

Gangsta Rap was a "protest" movement against the "crap rap" coming out of New York, basically. Then it became copied and commercialized to death. It's hardly a "real art form" because it's morphed into being nothing more then timely and easily forgotten upscale brand advertisements....

Btw, Alicia Keys is a mediocre pianist. Any 4 yr old could play the hook in "Fallen" with about 1 month of practice...
