Someone told me that as it was hosted in Russia, copyright rules don't apply out there. Don't know if that's the case or not, I had a set to download off of it still that I didn't previously have.

Copyright is the same the world over. You put copyright on something and it's yours and no else's. They cannot use it without your permission.
