I've changed my mind.
I remembered about The Right Stuff. Yearger was just a crazy guy and his accomplishments were useless. But without Yeager, Armstrong would have never walked on the moon.
If I'm not mistaken they are using the data to research the safety of astronauts if they had to eject/jump from a launched space vehicle at high altitude. Could be wrong though, have to look it up.

While I get what they're trying to accomplish, this seems more like a publicity stunt and pointless record breaking disguised as science. It is red bull after all, the poster child for "extreme" sports.
