this exact thing happened to me in little league in like 1979.
I was ten, pitched a no hitter followed by a one hitter in the next game.
The coach put on 1st for the rest of the season.
I was pissed, baseball was my life at the time.
Looking back on it I think it was the right thing.
Why? Because its LIT-TLE LEAGUE.
Its not high school ball, its fuckin little league
Its for fun 1st, competition 2nd.
Kids want to have fun, Little league is for fun, not watch one kid dominate the whole damn game.

If this happens in high school I would disagree 100%, but its little kids man.

But as it so often occurs here, I am alone on this also.

Yup. Often.

Fun AND competition. So the kid is good, but that should just be an incentive for every other player work harder to try and be as good.

Kids want to have fun. Endless fun. Like a damned puppy; you have to tell them NO sometimes. Otherwise you spoil them. The longer you save a kid from reality, the more harsh of a rude-awakening it'll be. Slip 'em hints of reality here and there unless you really want little assholes running around buying into all that feel-good bullshit that life actually is fair or even half/half fun and work.

There are people faster, stronger and more intelligent than us. We should look up to them and let them play whatever game they want, otherwise that sends a message.. to ALL PARTIES, that one kid is weird and everyone else sucks. How great of a message is that, eh? How can you have fun knowing that some kid sitting on the sidelines can outpitch you in a millisecond?

But hey, whatever. Maybe you didnt think of the message of inferiority this action is sending to the normal kids.

^^ That's a valid arguement, actually. I see where your coming from. There probably are other leagues the boy could join if he actually wanted to compete. However, if he just wants to have fun like everyone else, then that's when the problem shows up.

We disagree.
Harsh reality? Sending a message?Feel good bullshit?
Theyre little kids man, they don't need to deal with that shit yet.
Let them just have fun, and let the superstar pitcher play 3rd base or outfield as well as pitch, mix it up.
And Like I said, if it was High school I would completly agree.
There was a high school basketball player about 2 years ago that scored a hundred and something points in a game. Destroyed the other team.
The coach from the other team said it traumatized her players and wanted the kick ass player benched half way through the game.
That pissed me off. I mean this kid should sacrifice a potential scholarship just to save some feelings? No.
So if your post was aimed at something like that I would agree 100%.
But Not with 8, 9 and 10 year olds in little league

I agree that little league should be about fun. But that fun should come from the enjoyment of playing the sport. In that respect the parents and coaches aren't doing a good job if the only way the kids think they can have fun is through the act of winning. I think it's those type of things which ruins sports for young people more than anything. If kids are unable to have fun outside of being better than their opponent than the wrong lessons are being taught to them.

i played little league too and i pitched a whole game with ano hitter amd in the same game i got10 rbi and i still got to play cause my township knew it was only a game for fun

They should let the kid pitch as it is a part of the game which is enjoyable. If the other kids can't hit the pitches then it is incentive to get better.

I disagree. Competition IS fun. I'm of the opinion that "competitive spirit" knows no age, it's an instinct, a human trait based on the need to survive. You are born with it and it does not "kick in" at a certain age such as the 8th grade or high school.

When does one recognize his desire to compete? The instant one engages in any form of competition. It's not like "children" do not thrive on, or benefit from competition. To the contrary, I think it is necessary for their healthy development, both mentally and physically.

Kids, no matter how young, CAN handle competition, even LOSING, and learning from that loss and developing a burning desire to better themselves and achieve more the next time they are given the chance. It's what human survival is based on and there is no such thing as too young an age to start learning that.

If you don't let these kids bat against the best pitcher around, you are only doing them a disservice. Where is the "fun" in sheltering them from a challenge and NOT giving themselves the chance to excel against best competition available to them? By doing that, you are only limiting their development and robbing them of the opportunity to be the best that they can be.

Is that how you want to treat children?

In this case yes.

And not for the sake of sparing feelings, but just to make a game out of it.
Again, its little kids. Not high school, not an adult league.
And I'm not saying baby them, Let the kid pitch a few innings from time to time....but who wants to see a game where every kid strikes out?

Sure competition is a big part of it, something they will get plenty of when they enter the rat race.
But more so at this age its about having fun and playing together as a team.

If 17 of us got a game together, and player 18 was 1973 Nolan Ryan it would suck. Sure we can "strive to be better", but we ain't never gonna learn to hit a 109 mph fastball in one game or even a season or a lifetime.

A man's got to know his limitations

this is getting way out of hand. they are talking lawsuits, ending the league, etc.

I agree with Peter Gazinya. competition is good, and you have to learn to deal with losing! the kid DOES play in a league with older kids, where he is just an average player, but he wants to play in this league so he can play with his friends. its not like he pitches evry game. i think they were 8-0 and he's pitched in three games. he's not wild, no one is getting hit and/or hurt. Little Johnny stuck out, boo hoo. GET OVER IT! it happens

I agree. Children should also be taught that there are more important things in life then little league baseball. And what if he does hit some kid in the head? Either let him play with older kids or switch him to the field.

One of my favourite sayings, btw.
