Thanks Bodie. I'm not buying any references to USC's injuries about what happened last night. Texas has had more than its share of them as well this season and depth is really the true gauge of teams' strength so throw that stuff out the window. I don't think SC was prepared for what they saw last night on either side of the ball and that was a big factor from my perspective. I was actually pretty much prepared for a blowout....especially when I saw that Ehlinger was going to be taking the snaps at QB. It really was a mismatch if you compare the opposing QBs....Darnold looks like he could be starting in the NFL and Ehlinger looks like he should be asking his dad if he can borrow the car. The Horns' offense is handicapped due to the lack of an effective running game (even though Warren is an excellent back) and a one-dimensional approach to the passing game with a weapon like Collin Johnson and a serious lack of experience behind the center being the primary factors. There is no TE presence at all. These limitations were the main reason that Herman pulled out all the stops when it came to trick plays on offense....he had to show some type of razzle-dazzle to keep the extremely stout SoCal D from totally shutting us down. In that aspect, I think Herman got about all he could from the offense. I was very pleased that Ehlinger's confidence seemed to blossom as the game wore on and his fumble on the goal line was probably overdue since he was playing with such abandon anyway. Honestly, as soon as the game went to OT I was pretty much resigned to the fact that we were going to lose, especially with the silly sand-lot rules that the NCAA has in place for such a circumstance.
However, the defense appears to really be coming together....especially compared to the opening effort against Maryland. The big guys up front on the D-line were dominant against USC's potent stable of running backs, so much so that they had a significant effect on the Trojans' passing game as well. The LBs and secondary were superb against a top-flight level of competition so I really feel that this was a seminal game for us in that regard. Malik Jefferson and DeShon Elliott were all over the field. A lot of the "slop" that you refer to from USC was a direct result of what we were doing to them on defense. Any team that has a dominant defense is going to be competitive in the NCAA so I am feeling like the Herman effect is beginning to take hold as a result of the effort that was shown in this game.
Gotta remember that these are all still pretty much Charlie Strong's recruits so I would expect the rebuilding effort to take some time. Give him three years and I think Herman will have UT back in the national championship hunt. The difference in the attitude and performance of the Horns last night was palpable so I feel really good about the direction of this team right now.
