2017/2018 NCAA Football Thread

Oh and see ya later Jim Mora :wave2:
Kevin Sumlin, is how you blow that game.

I saw where a sportswriter on SBNation wrote an article that Jim Mora should be fired and Chip Kelly hired before week 2 because of UCLA's embarrassing loss to Texas A&M. He posted the story when UCLA was down by 34, but then UCLA stage that monster comeback, so rather than taking down the story. he just edited it to say that A&M should fire Sumlin and they hire Chip Kelly Before week 2.

That's funny.

So I'm at a BBQ yesterday and I mention to a friend that UCLA and Texas A&M is going to be on TV at 4:30. We miss the first part of the game but later I turn on the TV and it's 38-10, A&M leading. Later on when I get home it's 44-10. I totally wrote the game off with every reason to. Hours later I go to the bathroom to make number two and bring the phone with me. I check ESPN and in total disbelief I see UCLA came back to win 45-44. What The Heck?!?

LOL I can imagine. I turned the TV off at half time and was going to take a nap. But I had a bunch of work to do on my computer so I figured I might as well get it over with while leaving the radio broadcast on as background noise. Finally went back to the living room and turned on the TV again just before they scored their next to last TD.

Man, what a weak fucking lineup of games today. College football needs to do something about these Division 1 (sorry...I just cant get used to this FBS, etc bullshit) schools beating up on I-AA and Division 2 schools just so the smaller school can get a big paycheck. Oklahoma State versus South Alabama? What a joke. There are many other examples of out-of-conference mismatches like this every year. It's only done for financial reasons and is not in the spirit of good competition at all. It makes a mockery of the whole ranking system since the highly-ranked teams fatten up on these cupcakes and the result only serves to enhance their ranking. I don't like it at all. Makes for dull watching and is a blight on the entire NCAA.

Yeah Jag it was mostly a pretty uninspiring slate - although we've already had a few of those cupcakes jump up and win this year.

Oklahoma big revenge win at OSU
Worst start of the season: Baylor
USC is very good. Still picking them to face 'Bama in the finale'.
Betting wise Arkansas let me down but San Diego State and Indiana did me good.

When I went to bed, WSU was down by 21 in the 4th quarter with just over 9 minutes to go. The WSU fans looked like their dog had been run over, and the announcers were talking about how the fans had been hoping they would be undefeated by the time an undefeated USC came to town, which meant GAMEDAY would be there. And then I wake up this morning and find WSU won in overtime.

Jagger I watched your Horns take on the Trojans last night. On the positive side Texas has definitely improved from week one to week three, and you've got a lot of good athletes on that team, and the Trojans couldn't mount any kind of rushing attack against you're previously porous D. But USC played an uncharacteristically sloppy game and suffered a number of in game injuries. The Trojans probably won't be as good as I thought they'd be, especially now that the injury bug has hit them pretty hard. I was rooting for you guys. That turnover during the second overtime near the goal line was just a [NOBABE]heart breaker[/NOBABE].

Thanks Bodie. I'm not buying any references to USC's injuries about what happened last night. Texas has had more than its share of them as well this season and depth is really the true gauge of teams' strength so throw that stuff out the window. I don't think SC was prepared for what they saw last night on either side of the ball and that was a big factor from my perspective. I was actually pretty much prepared for a blowout....especially when I saw that Ehlinger was going to be taking the snaps at QB. It really was a mismatch if you compare the opposing QBs....Darnold looks like he could be starting in the NFL and Ehlinger looks like he should be asking his dad if he can borrow the car. The Horns' offense is handicapped due to the lack of an effective running game (even though Warren is an excellent back) and a one-dimensional approach to the passing game with a weapon like Collin Johnson and a serious lack of experience behind the center being the primary factors. There is no TE presence at all. These limitations were the main reason that Herman pulled out all the stops when it came to trick plays on offense....he had to show some type of razzle-dazzle to keep the extremely stout SoCal D from totally shutting us down. In that aspect, I think Herman got about all he could from the offense. I was very pleased that Ehlinger's confidence seemed to blossom as the game wore on and his fumble on the goal line was probably overdue since he was playing with such abandon anyway. Honestly, as soon as the game went to OT I was pretty much resigned to the fact that we were going to lose, especially with the silly sand-lot rules that the NCAA has in place for such a circumstance.

However, the defense appears to really be coming together....especially compared to the opening effort against Maryland. The big guys up front on the D-line were dominant against USC's potent stable of running backs, so much so that they had a significant effect on the Trojans' passing game as well. The LBs and secondary were superb against a top-flight level of competition so I really feel that this was a seminal game for us in that regard. Malik Jefferson and DeShon Elliott were all over the field. A lot of the "slop" that you refer to from USC was a direct result of what we were doing to them on defense. Any team that has a dominant defense is going to be competitive in the NCAA so I am feeling like the Herman effect is beginning to take hold as a result of the effort that was shown in this game.

Gotta remember that these are all still pretty much Charlie Strong's recruits so I would expect the rebuilding effort to take some time. Give him three years and I think Herman will have UT back in the national championship hunt. The difference in the attitude and performance of the Horns last night was palpable so I feel really good about the direction of this team right now.

I'm not looking forward to the Iowa/Penn State game with any optimism. They had to get to overtime to beat Iowa State the week before last and they kept North Texas in the game way too long. And a few weeks down the road they'll have to play them C_ck__ckers from Columbus. If my Hawks get to 9-3 this year I will be amazed.

By the way, you can't spell Cocksucker without "OSU."

Holy shit over/under on Texas Tech-Houston is 68.5. I don't know if Houston will give up that many points since their D has been very stout so far but the competition has been a bit questionable so they'll get a good test from the Red Raiders today. I'll go with the under I guess but this game may be prohibitive. Probably is in fact. Miami also had best not take Toledo for granted....terrific program that doesn't get the respect it deserves being in the MAC. Well deserved week off for Texas as they regroup after the USC classic last week. Oh....and Mizzou will doubtless get killed by Auburn today in Columbia. Word leaking out that the team quit on Barry Odom last week so there is big trouble at Missouri. Why did Gary Pinkel have to get sick? The program was really on the right track until he did. Wishing Coach Pinkel the best in his battle against cancer.

I wouldn't either if I were you, Ace. Penn State looks to be all the way back and the Hawkeyes have been very wobbly. This could be an ugly one but I hope not for your sake. I was born in Iowa so I have a bit of a soft spot for the Black & Gold. Love me some old-time Hayden Fry football back in the day. Great program that is a lot like Mizzou....usually good, sometimes really good, other times not so much and occasionally fucking horrible. They never seem to be really good enough to grab the brass ring however. Cool unis too with an iconic logo.

How about some more chatter here, everybody?? This thread is on life support!

Watching Texas Tech-Houston former Red Raider HC Tommy Tuberville couldn't be rooting harder for Tech if he were on the sidelines. Tech can do no wrong (if I hear him say "Air Raid Offense" one more time I'm gonna puke) and Houston is nothing but a group of fuck-ups according to Tommy. I'd turn the sound down and listen on the radio but they block the broadcast out online. That said, it really pisses me off over the fact that he ain't far from wrong as Kyle Allen has SUCKED today turning the ball over 4 times as Houston's anemic offense is being dominated by Tech. Maybe this year's team can't play with the big boys like Tom Herman's teams did. :flaccid: :crying:
