David Wright singles up the middle with the bases loaded off Baez. Two runs score. Mid of 7th. Mets 3 Dodgers 0.

Expect Mattingly to get a lot of heat for this if the game ends 3 to 1 Mets, which it appears it will.
Now tomorrow becomes a must win for the Bums, because there's no freaking way Brett Anderson (who?) is winning game three in New York.

I was so happy for him, he's a really good player unfortunately he's battled lots of injuries in what could have been a great career. Great game by deGrom.

It looks like the Cubs survive another day, and will have their split ... they are up 6-1 through three innings. It's early though. Lance Lynn is now in for the Cardinals. Kyle Hendricks is pitching good giving up one run through 3 innings, with four strikeouts.

Agree. If the Cubs cannot gain a split at Busch, they are toast (Arrieta can't pitch every game, unfortunately for the Cubbies). If the Cardinals win tomorrow (by no means a given but I'll take Garcia over Hendricks any day), the northsiders are in serious deep shit. By the same token, if they can somehow manage a win, it's anyone's series. Tomorrow is the pivotal game. Lackey was tremendous tonight....dude will get a big pay raise next year if this keeps up.
The only good pitcher Cards have left and he implodes with errors. Everyone keeps handing Cubs gifts.

I'm not sure how that happened to be honest. As far as Garcia goes, I really don't understand how he was yanked so early. Congrats to the Cubs and Joe Maddon for out-managing Mike Matheny. To score 5 runs in an inning when the ball never leaves the infield speaks volumes. Matheny doesn't know how to play (or defend) small-ball so he was left holding his dick in his hand when Maddon pulled a double safety-squeeze on us. He made some strange pitching moves after that (Lance Lynn for one inning? WTF?). Add the two horrific errors by Wong and Garcia and you end up with a very predictable loss. Hey, that's baseball. Congrats to the Cubs....they earned the win today.

That said, the entire universe is assuming an Arrieta win on Monday. Odds will definitely be in his favor but even he can 't win 'em all. He is human, yes? Michael Wacha is not exactly a stiff so we'll see what happens....all of a sudden this is a series. Lots of action to come....fasten your safety belt. I just hope Garcia is OK....he didn't look good when Matheny yanked him and we definitely need him of we are to have any chance going forward.

Probably just lost the series, we don't have any one to start. Wacha has been terrible the last 4 starts, he might as well start game 3 but they have all the momentum for game 4 at home. I don't see them as winning with 5 hits, we gave that game to them with errors.

The one and only.
Good win for the Cubs... but it was a strange day. Their offense is still pretty anemic. St. Louis gift wrapped three runs on awful throws from Wong and Garcia. I'm still convinced that if Garcia threw home after fielding the bunt, he would have gunned Fowler at the plate. But he immediately turned to first, hesitated (panicked), and threw it into right field. Cards don't make many mistakes. Just glad the Cubbies were able to capitalize. Surprisingly good pitching from the bullpen. Getting a win in a game pitched by Hendricks is a huge bonus. Dude loves to hang off speed pitches. Luckily, it only cost him three solo shots today.

Wacha v. Arrieta will be fun to watch. Anyone can win that game, and it's certainly not a given just because Arrieta is on the bump.

Utley's slide looked dirty as fuck. It's one thing to take Tejada out and make an attempt on the bag. It's another to slide after the bag and not even make an attempt at the bag. I like hard nosed baseball, but not like that. I hope Utley gets one in the ear hole the next time he is at the plate.

I also don't understand the safe call. Utley never touched the bag, how the hell is he safe? He even ran off the field after the play. MLB says that the throw pulled Tejada off the bag and that's why he doesn't get the "in the neighborhood" call or interference from Utley. That's bullshit. At the very least, Utley should have been out at second.

I think we'll see some sort of retaliation for this down the line. And it'll be well deserved.

The correct call should have been batter and runner are out due to Utley's interference, no runs scored. It was a late dirty slide, plain and simple. The Umps just didn't have the balls to call it that in Dodger Stadium.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
There have been a lot of dirty slides in the playoffs. Mike Napoli had one against Toronto. Nothing came of it, but it was dirty. It is going to get interesting.

I watched that Chase Utley slide half a dozen times today. It was a late slide IMHO. I just talked to a former minor league 2nd baseman who called it vicious & late. I think we may see a "Posey" rule at 2nd base-the "Tejada" rule?

David Wright said it or alluded to it ... Yes, there's history between them, Utley and Tejada. Below is the September 24, 2010 incident.

I think that's a bit of an overreaction, Whit. I agree that not having Martinez as a front-line pitcher is a huge problem for us (I'd love to have him starting game 4) but this series is a long way from being over, even if Arrieta is lights out and the Cubs beat us tomorrow. All we need is a split at Wrigley and I'll take my chances with Lackey in game 5 back home at Busch.

Of greater immediate concern to me is the fact that evidently Garcia has had a stomach virus for the past couple of days and supposedly notified Matheny of it about an hour before the game started yesterday. At that point, how he allowed him to go ahead and make the start is beyond comprehension. He obviously was not at his best from the start....you just can't risk that likelihood in a game that important! Tyler Lyons could have been called upon to start instead, thereby allowing Garcia to be a serious option for game 4. Just incredibly poor judgement by Matheny. Unbelievable really. Add to that the manner in which Maddon took Matheny to school on how to play small ball in the second inning and it spelled doom for the Redbirds. Matheny's post-season judgement has been called into question more than once (Randy Choate against the Giants last year for instance) and this is just another glaring example.

Chicago presents a serious matchup issue for us from the start without Matheny making poor personnel decisions to aid them. I'm dumbfounded quite honestly....you don't start a pitcher who is vomiting....seems pretty obvious, no? What was he thinking? Still, perhaps Garcia remains an option in game 4 if we lose game 3. I don't see how we run Lyons or Villanueva out there in an elimination game. Lynn would be another possible option but why Matheny chose to pitch him for a single inning last night is also baffling. Very strange decisions for sure. Fuck....why did Martinez have to go down on his final start of the season? Just really bad luck....the kind of bad luck we've had all year when it comes to injuries. Anyway....tomorrow at Wrigley is the priority. Should be a helluva game with Wacha against Arrieta.

OK....my :2 cents: regarding the Utley "slide"....it was about as illegal as it gets. He made no effort to slide into the base....actually didn't even start his slide until he was already past the bag and was about 2 feet north of the base to begin with. It should have been called an illegal slide and both baserunner and batter should have been called out (I have no rooting interest in this by the way). I don't blame Utley....he's doing whatever it takes to win but his slide was illegal, made no attempt to reach the base legitimately and yet was called safe somehow (he never even touched the base for chrissakes!!). I blame the umpires for totally blowing the call in the first place. What a shame Tejada had his leg broken on the play. Really a bad moment for MLB and their officiating. It will be interesting to see what happens the next time Utley comes up to bat....scenario for big trouble.

Lastly, Astros appear to be in command once again against KC. Royals face elimination after Keuchel's tremendous performance today. He's the AL Cy Young winner without question in my book.

Problem was that Garcia was doing the best, Wacha's has like a 7 era in the last 4 starts. He's giving up a lot of HR and at Chicago that won't be pretty. Cards aren't exactly hitting, either are the Cubs, but they BELIEVE they are better than their numbers. Cards replacement players strike out too much and even Yadi looks like he doesn't want to bat.

Still, you don't start a player (especially a pitcher) who is throwing up and has stomach flu. Lyons could have easily stepped in and gotten to the 4th or 5th perhaps. Wacha's had some rest so we have to hope to get his best today. You'll know early on if he's getting ahead of hitters, keeping the ball down and the change-up is working. If not....well, let's just hope the wind is blowing in today. The Cubs strike out more than any team in MLB so I don't see Reynolds, etc being that much of a liability in that regard. We have to get solid pitching, period. The rest will take care of itself.

Honestly, the loss of Martinez and Yadi's lingering issues worry me more than anything. This team has been like a MASH unit all year and risen above the challenge but the playoffs are different and the law of averages has to come into play sometime. Lot's of ball to play, anything can happen.

Good game between Texas/Toronto. Marco Estrada pitched a great game for Toronto & showed why every team should toss their radar guns in the garbage. Like Mark Buherle, he's a PITCHER & locks up hitters on 90 mph fastballs. Good to see Tulo get off the schnide. He's a very professional ball player. I couldn't believe 4 umps missed a balk in the 4th or 5th inning. (my memory is a little mushy right now with all the baseball I've watched in the last few days) 4 games today-freakin' awesome.

Great come back by KC today against Houston to force a game 5 on Wednesday.

Toronto beats Texas 8-4 to force game 5 on Wednesday afternoon. Jays starter RA Dickey was surprisingly lifted after 4 2/3 with a 7-1 in favour of David Price. Price pitched 3 innings giving up 3 runs. Texas is surprisingly starting Cole Hamels. Jays chew up lefties & game 1 starter Giardo (sp) is 3-0 vs. Toronto this year. For Toronto it'll be the Stro show.

My salute to the calculator and slide rule geeks in the Dodger front office :thefinger

You've only had the entire season to acquire a dependable third starter. Now do you finally understand why you might just possibly need one?

Fucking morons. Go sit on your precious analytics.
Here's hoping the Dodger ownership group finds that failure as incomprehensible and inexcusable as I do.
