Probably just lost the series, we don't have any one to start. Wacha has been terrible the last 4 starts, he might as well start game 3 but they have all the momentum for game 4 at home. I don't see them as winning with 5 hits, we gave that game to them with errors.
I think that's a bit of an overreaction, Whit. I agree that not having Martinez as a front-line pitcher is a huge problem for us (I'd love to have him starting game 4) but this series is a long way from being over, even if Arrieta is lights out and the Cubs beat us tomorrow. All we need is a split at Wrigley and I'll take my chances with Lackey in game 5 back home at Busch.
Of greater immediate concern to me is the fact that evidently Garcia has had a stomach virus for the past couple of days and supposedly notified Matheny of it about an hour before the game started yesterday. At that point, how he allowed him to go ahead and make the start is beyond comprehension. He obviously was not at his best from the start....you just can't risk that likelihood in a game that important! Tyler Lyons could have been called upon to start instead, thereby allowing Garcia to be a serious option for game 4. Just incredibly poor judgement by Matheny. Unbelievable really. Add to that the manner in which Maddon took Matheny to school on how to play small ball in the second inning and it spelled doom for the Redbirds. Matheny's post-season judgement has been called into question more than once (Randy Choate against the Giants last year for instance) and this is just another glaring example.
Chicago presents a serious matchup issue for us from the start without Matheny making poor personnel decisions to aid them. I'm dumbfounded quite honestly....you don't start a pitcher who is vomiting....seems pretty obvious, no? What was he thinking? Still, perhaps Garcia remains an option in game 4 if we lose game 3. I don't see how we run Lyons or Villanueva out there in an elimination game. Lynn would be another possible option but why Matheny chose to pitch him for a single inning last night is also baffling. Very strange decisions for sure. Fuck....why did Martinez have to go down on his final start of the season? Just really bad luck....the kind of bad luck we've had all year when it comes to injuries. Anyway....tomorrow at Wrigley is the priority. Should be a helluva game with Wacha against Arrieta.
OK....my :2 cents: regarding the Utley "slide"....it was about as illegal as it gets. He made no effort to slide into the base....actually didn't even start his slide until he was already past the bag and was about 2 feet north of the base to begin with. It should have been called an illegal slide and both baserunner and batter should have been called out (I have no rooting interest in this by the way). I don't blame Utley....he's doing whatever it takes to win but his slide was illegal, made no attempt to reach the base legitimately and yet was called safe somehow (he never even touched the base for chrissakes!!). I blame the umpires for totally blowing the call in the first place. What a shame Tejada had his leg broken on the play. Really a bad moment for MLB and their officiating. It will be interesting to see what happens the next time Utley comes up to bat....scenario for big trouble.
Lastly, Astros appear to be in command once again against KC. Royals face elimination after Keuchel's tremendous performance today. He's the AL Cy Young winner without question in my book.
