Well, we didn't even make a world cup from '50 to '90, and now this year we're in the "group of death" because we have become that formidable over the course of the last several world cups. We don't even have arguably our greatest player of all time this year (Donovan) yet we're still formidable. No one gave us a chance, for sure, so it's a testament to Klinsman as well.
I'm just hoping we get an elite youngster or two in the next decade to give us even more respect. As I said with our large country and the game growing it is only a matter of time when it happens. I know of one person in particular that I know personally who went pro in one sport but was even a better soccer player. The growth (slow for sure) of the MLS may be instrumental in the young players of the next generation taking up soccer (a Fall sport) over football (another Fall sport), for example. Football is dying in America right now and that in itself will only help more Fall sports kids turning to soccer players.
