Who's seen these films, and what did you think of them? Personally, I found The Hustler to be quite excellent. Where it's decidedly bleakness was used to it's overall effect. Needless to say ... Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, and others were all top notch in this classic film...
