I don't get this. Foreman is not the greatest fighter in the world. He's alright but he could wind up in intensive care. He's just not that great. And how do they expect to fill Yankee Stadium? :dunno: Mayweather-Pacquiao maybe, but Foreman just will not bring a crowd. :2 cents:

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

They won't have to. As far as I know, the seating is only being configured for 30,000. Cotto does have a decent following in New York, his fights at MSG always sell out. New York has a good Jewish population, Foreman is training to become a rabbi and lives in Brooklyn.

IBF Confirms: Klitschko vs Haye is being negotiated

IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker*confirms that heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko formally notified*the sanctioning organization about his intention to fight WBA champion David Haye of England. He told the IBF his team is involved in negotiations with Haye's co-promoter, Sauerland Event and manager Adam Booth.

Because Klitschko is pursuing a unification fight, the IBF tells sportsbox.ru the mandatory defense owed to Alexander Povetkin has been pushed back to a later date. Previously the sanctioning organization*ordered Klitschko and Povetkin to reach an agreement by April 26.

"According to our rules, holding*a unification fight, as I said earlier, has priority over a mandatory defense," Tucker said.

WBC forbids Mexican boxers to fight in Arizona

Jose Sulaiman, World Boxing Council President, the WBC Board of Governors, and the Federation of Boxing Commissions of Mexico (FECOMBOX) unanimously agreed that they will not authorize Mexican boxers to leave the country to fight professionally in Arizona, United States, due to the shameful, inhumane, and discriminatory anti-immigration law, which is no other thing than a flagrant ********* to the basic principles of dignity and equality between races.

The WBC fully devoted itself to fight against Apartheid in South Africa for 19 long years, until Nelson Mandela, who was in prison for about 27 years, was released to later become the President of such country.

Great figures of boxing have fought in Arizona, boxers such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Salvador Sanchez, Konstantin Tszyu, “Coloradito” Lopez and many, many others, even Mexican preliminary fighters, and the WBC will not allow that in boxing, athletes are exposed to suffer that degrading act, humiliating and inhumane, as racial discrimination is.

This prohibition will come into effect on May 1st, 2010, respecting retroactive contracts; we are certain that the Arizona State Boxing Commission, amicable and always in mutual cooperation with us, will understand that this is an action against politicians who do not have a just mind and do not respect human equality.

Amir Khan's work visa denied, Malignaggi fight in doubt?

Amir Khan's preparations for his WBA light-welterweight title defence against Paulie Malignaggi have been hit by a visa problem. Khan, said to have been denied a visa due to past motoring offences here in the UK, journeyed to Vancouver, Canada in order to re-apply for a work permit. The process could take a week but Golden Boy, who are promoting the contest, are confident that Khan will be able to defend his title at Madison Square Garden, New York come May the 15th.

“Amir Khan has had to go to Vancouver, and it is due to a few incidents when he was younger, but we are completely confident that he will be in New York to defend his title ahead of the fight with Malignaggi. Khan is a professional, and he has maintained his focus throughout the events that have taken place. Freddie Roach has gone up to Vancouver because it has taken longer to sort this out than we at first thought," confirmed Robert Diaz of Golden Boy Promotions when speaking to The Daily Telegraph.

Khan's trainer, Freddie Roach, has travelled to Canada to continue the pre-fight preparations.

Abraham vs. Froch: Carl still wants a Nottingham venue

The venue dispute is far from over. Carl Froch is still pushing for his home city of Nottingham to host his next fight in the Super Six Boxing Classic. Froch is set to fight Arthur Abraham in August. Abraham's promoters, Sauerland Event, would like the fight to take place in Germany.

Froch won't consider Germany. Instead he would like the fight take place in a large home venue like City Ground or Meadow Lane. He thinks the large home venues would bring enough money to the table where Abraham might consider taking the fight in Nottingham.

"They want me to fight in Berlin which is Arthur Abrahams' home town - that's not going to happen. Hopefully we're going to get it at the Forest or County ground because we need a big venue to make it financially feasible," Froch told East Midlands Today.

"I really need the support of the people. They get that next gear out of you. That's what brought the best out of Michel Kessler and got him the victory."

Fernando Montiel Knocks Hozumi Hasegawa Out To Unify

At the Nihon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan, WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (41-2-2, 31 KOs) added the WBC title to his waist when he stopped Hozumi Hasegawa (28-3, 12 KO) in the fourth round of a competitive fight.*

Both had their moments in the first round, but it was Hasegawa who landed the better combination of punches and caught Montiel with some very good counters.

In the second, Montiel stayed on the back-foot. He allowed Hasegawa to take charge. Montiel was looking for a counter. The third was more of Hasegawa landing very good punches while coming in. Montiel with a hook and Hasegawa answered. They traded hooks again. The punches of Hasegawa were pushing Montiel back.

In the fourth, Hasegawa was using his jab to work in and then unleashed hard combos. Montiel caught Hasegawa ******** with a counter*lefthook bomb and then battered him against the ropes until referee Laurence Cole jumped in to stop the fight.

Mayweather vs Sergio Martinez: Floyd Says 'It's Possible'

According to New York Newsday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is open to a possible move to middleweight for a fight with WBC/WBO champion Sergio Martinez. Mayweather returned to action on Saturday night, dominating Shane Mosley over twelve rounds to win a unanimous decision.

After the fight was over, Mayweather was asked about*some possible options -*if a*fight with Manny Pacquiao is not made. One reporter asked Mayweather about the possibility of moving up to 160-pounds to fight Martinez, who recently beat Kelly Pavlik for the titles. Mayweather surprised everyone by stating "it's possible."

Mayweather has won titles at 130, 135, 140, 147 and 154. Martinez is not a big middleweight, but he is a lot bigger and stronger than Mayweather. Mayweather could be bluffing to make a deal with Pacquiao. Several years ago, when Mayweather was fighting at 140-pounds, he was demanding a fight with Winky Wright, who at the time was the unified champion at 154. When it came time to make*the deal, Mayweather's demands were so one-sided that he couldn't have been serious.

Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye talks go well with HBO

According to a report in Golzka, negotiations are going very well to make the heavyweight unification fight between champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye. Golzka reports that during the Mayweather-Mosley weekend in Las Vegas, Klitschko's adviser Shelly Finkel and Haye's co-promoter Golden Boy Promotions spoke with cable network HBO about the financial details of the fight and the scheduling. The talks were reported to have gone very well and the*negotiations*will continue to*move forward.

Klitschko's trainer Emanuel Steward believes the fight may happen in September. The date*will depend on the availability of*a venue and the cable networks. The*venue date has to work for three cable networks, located in the United States, Germany and England.

Shocker: Maidana withdraws from Bradley fight

RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIF.*– World Boxing Association interim super lightweight champion MARCOS "El Pollo" MAIDANA pulled out of his fight against undefeated World Boxing Organization junior welterweight champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY today.* The public news conference scheduled for Tuesday, May 4 at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. is canceled.

Gary Shaw, who co-promotes Bradley with Thompson Boxing Promotions, received a call from Eric Gomez, Vice President/Matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions, Maidana's co-promoter, moments ago informing him that Maidana was pulling out of the fight.

"Eric told me Maidana missed his flight to the U.S. and later in the same conversation told me Maidana's back was still injured and that he would not be fighting Timmy on July 17," said Shaw.* "Obviously Maidana's back was not getting any better and a call to us last week from Team Maidana would have been the professional thing to do.* But HBO and Agua Caliente are standing behind Timmy and his July 17 date, and I expect to announce Timmy's new opponent soon."

Phil Cooper, executive director of marketing for Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa said the development is a disappointment: "Certainly this is not what we expected, however we're excited about what Gary has in the works.

Bradley's promoter: Marcos Maidana is a scared chicken

For the second time in less than a month, Marcos Maidana has withdrawn from a scheduled fight with WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. The fight was originally scheduled to take place on June 19. Maidana, citing a back injury, withdrew from the fight on April 13. Maidana's team requested an extension of 20 to 30 days and the fight was rescheduled to July 17.

On Monday afternoon Maidana informed his co-promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, that his back was still bothering him, and he withdrew from the fight for the second time. Bradley's promoter Gary Shaw is not buying the "back injury" claim. Shaw tells BoxingScene.com that Maidana was unable to provide any medical documentation to confirm the initial back injury in April. He believes Maidana changed his mind about the fight and found a way to get out.

Shaw*is not walking away quietly. He plans to involve the California State Athletic Commission. Shaw will petition the CSAC to ***** Maidana to honor the fight agreement. The current plan is for*Bradley*to move forward on the HBO televised date of July 17 with a new opponent. A few potential names will be put together in the next few days.

"I believe that he is a chicken, that he is running from Tim Bradley. I believe the first back injury was a fake. They couldn't provide doctor's records. They couldn't provide records that he went through treatment. His new name is "El Pollo." He can run but he can't hide. We had a deal between us and Golden Boy and I'm going to try to keep him in the deal through the commission. He obviously knew he was lucky against [Victor] Ortiz and when he knew that he had to face a real fighter, he runs like a scared chicken," Shaw told BoxingScene.com.

"What he did was totally unprofessional. According to Eric Gomez [Golden Boy VP], Golden Boy did not know about this. It was wrong to do this to [fight venue] Agua Caliente, who have been supporting boxing....or did support boxing. Just another boxer who burns another site. Right now we are looking at different opponents. It's a shame that boxing is not filled with heart and nuts. Instead we get sprinkled by chickens. He must have hurt his back carrying that bum he fought in Argentina in his last fight."

Alexander ready to replace Maidana, wants Bradley now

As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Marcos Maidana withdrew from his scheduled fight with WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. Bradley-Maidana was set to take place on the HBO televised date of July 17 at the Agua Caliente Casino in California.

A very interested party in the Bradley-Maidana fallout is WBC/IBF junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander. For the last few weeks, there has been some tension between the camps of Bradley and Alexander, who are regarded as the two best fighters at junior welterweight. Alexander is scheduled to appear on HBO in August. And like his rival Bradley, Alexander has been unable to lock down an opponent.

Alexander's trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham tells BoxingScene.com that his fighter is ready, willing, and able to replace Maidana.

"He has no opponent. We have no opponent. They are the two best junior welterweights in the world. The only problem is, Tim Bradley is not ready to fight Devon Alexander. They want to claim they are number one but they don't want to have a fight with the best guy in the division to prove that they are the best in the division," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.

"Right now is the perfect opportunity to give the fans what they really want in boxing, to see the two guys who are the best in their division fight each other to prove who is the best in the junior welterweight division."

Cunningham believes the Agua Caliente Casino is too small for Bradley-Alexander. He realizes the possibility of getting the fight to Alexander's hometown of St. Louis is slim, so he's willing to compromise.*

"We don't have to fight in St. Louis. We can meet him in Las Vegas. What excuse are they going to come up with now? HBO would love to make this fight and I think they would compensate it. Let's do this. It would be the perfect opportunity. If Team Bradley refuse to make this fight, they need to stop claiming they are the best. They need to stop claiming they are number one because they're ducking the best guy in the division," Cunningham said.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Hopefully it's next, there's nobody else available at welterweight for either fighter

Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye is heading to Germany

According to reports in the Russian press, the unification between heavyweight champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye is probably going to take place in Germany rather than England.

Klitschko's trainer Emanuel Steward has been talking about a September fight date. Golzka*reports the fight*is being discussed for*the month of November. Last weekend in Las Vegas, Klitschko's adviser Shelly Finkel and Haye's co-promoter Golden Boy Promotions had positive discussions with American cable network HBO. The proposed fight date will have to work for HBO, German network RTL and the cable network carrying the event in England.

Adamek: Give me shot with Haye or Klitschkos

NEWARK, N.J. -- Tomasz Adamek wants a shot at a heavyweight boxing title and he's not being picky about which one.

The Polish boxer who trains out of New Jersey said in a conference call Tuesday that he will take on David Haye of England or either of the Klitschko brothers -- Vitali or Wladimir -- to wear a championship belt.

Haye is the WBA heavyweight champion. Vitali Klitschko holds the WBC title, while Wladimir has the WBO and IBF championships.

"I am ready for everybody," Adamek said, without waiting for his translator.

Adamek won his 10th straight fight last month with a majority decision over Chris Arreola in California a little more than a week ago.

Kathy Duva of promoter Main Events said Adamek wants to fight again in either late summer or early fall, and obviously wants a title fight. She added there has been some interest in a Haye-Adamek fight.

Adamek also felt a bout against Haye might be the best for him and the boxing public.

"I am positive if the fight against David Haye comes to fruition, two things, speed and my precision will prevail," Adamek said through his interpreter. "So this will be a very interesting fight. You shouldn't worry about how the fight will look. It will be a very exciting fight."

The 33-year-old Adamek does not have a lot of experience as a heavyweight. The former cruiserweight champion has fought three times in the weight class. His bout against Arreola, who outweighed him by almost 34 pounds, was admittedly the toughest of his career.

Duva said that she has not spoken to HBO about a fight, but she said the network has indicated it would want him to fight Haye, who defended his title against John Ruiz early last month.

There also have been rumors that HBO is interested in a Haye fight against Wladimir Klitschko, who retained his title by knocking out Eddie Chambers in March.

Vitali Klitschko is scheduled to defend his WBC title against Polish-born Albert Sosnowski on May 29 in Germany.

"Tomasz has allowed us to make his career without allowing television to dictate what he will do next, all the time," Duva said. "I think that has given us the freedom to go out there and help him become a big, big star."

Adamek, who was born in Zywiec but fights primarily out of Jersey City, N.J., is a major attraction in New Jersey. He drew more than 10,000 fans in posting an unanimous decision over Jason Estrada earlier this year.

Abraham-Froch: Switzerland may settle the venue dispute

According to a report in Bild, Arthur Abraham vs. Carl Froch may head to Switzerland. The camps of the two super middleweights are in a tug of war over the venue. Their fight takes place in the third stage of the Super Six Boxing Classic on August 21. Froch wants the fight in Nottingham. Abraham wants the fight in Germany.

The contract terms of the Super Six*gives each*boxer the power to prevent a fight from taking place in the opponent's home country. Froch has refused to fight in Germany, and Abraham doesn't want to fight in Nottingham. Switzerland has been bought up as a neutral location to stage the event. The fight contract for Abraham-Froch calls for a venue in "Europe." The cities of Basel and Zurich are being discussed for the fight.

Running Diary: Mayweather-Mosley PPV

Sergio Martinez Will Not Consider Mayweather, For Now

Newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who’s been visiting Mexico City, faces a defense snag. WBC rules state that immediate rematches are not allowed. In years past, these type of rematch clauses tended to hold back other highly ranked worthy challengers, who had to wait too long for deserved title bouts.

Although Martinez’s win was clear cut in every sense, Kelly Pavlik fought bravely through an unstaunched ***** flow, and in spite of what he described as a whiteout, to make the fight competitive.

While underlining the rule, WBC President Jose Sulaiman who praised Sergio Martinez’s courage, determination and ability, also added that an application concerning this issue would be considered.

International matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz, who helped guide Sergio to the pinnacle of his career and*accompanied him to Mexico City, stressed the crucial importance and significance of the Green Belt. But he also explained to BoxingScene.com that Martinez will not entertain any other offers, including a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., because there is a rematch clause with Pavlik and they plan to honor their end of the deal. If Pavlik passes on the rematch, then Martinez is open for business.

“We are not entertaining any offer from any fighters or promoters beside Kelly Pavlik, because we signed and we need to honor the contract, regardless of the money. I believe in Boxing, just like in any other business, you need to honor your word and you honor your signature. So it’s Kelly next,” Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com.

Sergio Martinez has mentioned that he would like to fight Antonio Margarito again, somewhere down the line. Ten years ago, in the ******* of* his professional career, Sergio was TKO’d by Margarito in seven rounds.

Sampson quantified this as a*"too much, too soon" career blunder by commenting: “He was mismanaged early in his career. He got paid less than a*[$1,000] to fight Margarito. So he walked back into Argentina with $900 dollars in his pocket and a defeat. This happens many times in boxing and I’m totally against that.

“However, he’s now looking at millions of dollars and he has a great future. And definitely Margarito is one fight he wants as a rematch, because honestly it’s the only fight he really lost.* He got robbed with Paul Williams and didn’t draw with Kermit Cintron, whom he knocked out. He should have won by disqualification, because all the team came to the ring, and then he got robbed in the victory.”

Sergio himself who far from denigrating Antonio Margarito, praised him as a tremendous fighter and a decent person, confirmed he does want another fight. He explained: “In the future it’s very important because it’ll be a great sporting rematch because professionally we’re involved. It’ll be good for him, and it’ll be good for me.”

Sampson also clarified that it was at least a year too early to consider either Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, or Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez to challenge Sergio, as neither are the finished article.

Re: 2010 Boxing discussion thread

Moseley vs Mayweather was pretty gay fight huh? Mayweather just boxes too much for my liking (the few times I've seen him). Not enough brawling.

Paul Williams about to be on.
