Reputation score and ideas

Members have been ******* the Rep system ever since it was first used. Some people think those points matter. In the grand scheme of things, they don't. Petra gave a little meaning to them by allowing you to get myfreeones points from them. But if you have it in your mind that they in any way represent members who make good post, then you are deluding yourself. Hell, even the so-called good member's rep points are inflated. They've all used that thread to gain points (I'm sure there are a few who haven't so don't get caught up with the word all). Many times just so their point totals can accurately represent their post count, at least what they see as an accurate representation in their minds.

In fact I remember the day I completely gave up on the Rep system. A member that often leaves for months and returns for a few months and then leaves again, who shall rename nameless but you can probably figure it out, had very little Rep points because he had been away and I think the Reps were reset back to zero. Not more than a week later this member's rep was twice as much as many of the members who had the highest rep scores. He posted often in "the thread". Why did he do it? My first thought was that he wanted his rep points to reflect the fact that he was one of the members with the highest post count so his rep should reflect that. Why? I don't know. I'll just call it Bulletin Board EGO. I just know it didn't have anything to do with the quality of his posts, because he hadn't made many post in that short amount of time that he gained all those rep points.

So the moral of the story is...forget about the rep system as an accurate way of gauging the quality of a member's post. If you want to really acknowledge a good post by a member, send them a PM.

they don't send you money? Damn people wire me money all the time. Must be due to my coolness :hatsoff:

How about if you make the rep comments visible on a member's profile page? Then people could visit and see where all the rep came from.

Or how about a rep counter, when someone gives positive rep you get one point, and likewise negative rep earns minus one. Then you could see if a person has lots of individual reps, or just a couple from high-powered members. :wave2:
