US army develops robotic suits

Nice post! It's like the first of many many steps towards an Adeptus Astartes style of Power Armour :)

Even more scary is the developement of robot type remote control war fighting machines.Rich countries won't even have to put their people at risk, just sick their remote control weapons on ya.Just think of all the new wars we could have since no one on our side was being put at risk.

Where is this world going to?

Where is this world going to?

Hopefully a bright future where technologies like this will make the quality of life better for mankind? Or a post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant zombies and killer robots. :dunno:

Wow, power armor. My favorite sci-fi worlds are slowly coming a reality. :D

I wouldn't worry about a war though. The government would never want to spend that much on an army of them when it can more easily and cheaply send a more replaceable human to die.

Now if you’re an individual that really pissed off some important person or the government, you might be screwed then. They could always send near-invincible armored people against you.:1orglaugh

Psssh, That's nothing.. I'm currently working with a group of scientists developing (Done) now building a light fibre exoskeleton like the Omar use on Deus Ex 2.

I wouldn't be so sure, after the round of lawsuits and claims they're going to get out of Iraq they may start to rethink that position.

I think just like jobs have been lost to automation and robots the military would love to do the same where possible.Robot painting cars is way less costly than a human doing it and doesn't want a lunch or coffee break or tommorow off eithier lol.Hard to beleive that if we removed humans from being in harms way more that would not mean a much higher probability of conflict.Just take Iraq as an example if most of what we were doing was by a robot would it be as politically unpopular even if it cost the same. The news might be something like we lost 3 robots this week but the enemy lost 900 people.Brave new world !

I don't know who will be suing who much.Soldiers will get whatever the congress and president decides they get for services after they come home. But they really can't sue anybody for normal stuff that happens in wars.

We're the USA. We don't make products that could possibly last long enough to warrant the cost of something like that. :1orglaugh

Seriously, while I joked about invincibility, they have certain vulnerabilities that people don't have.

Any machine like that will have problems like:

A need for a huge power source and you can't just plug it into a power grid.
The need to have people fix it constantly.
It wouldn't fit in tight spaces.
If it's some sort of exoskeleton the people inside still need to breath and have a source of air.
The loss of dexterity.
It would need some sort of environmental controls against extreme climate conditions if it suits a person. The heat and weight from carrying around a flack jacket is bad enough.
It would need to have complex software to run, and if a person doesn't controls it, it would need a supremely well-developed AI.
They would be vulnerable to EMPs.
Sand and grit would probably seriously screw around with it's functioning.
It would have to be cheap enough and withstand enough damage considering people are going to be trying to do intentional harm to it.
It couldn't walk on certain surfaces as well considering the added weight.

I would see something like that more as a limited use item to either protect stationary important targets or to infiltrate the entrenched fortification now and then with more protection is needed.

What I am talking about are things like we had this thread on earlier.

"Robot warriors have already seen action in Iraq, and the US Army plans to replace one-third of its armored vehicles and weapons with robots by 2015. These ******* machines may one day come equipped with an artificial conscience -- even to the extent of disobeying immoral orders."
