Huddersfield Road, EllandThe A629 sweeps up the hillside from Elland to Ainley Top, where it burrows under the M62. The old Huddersfield Road passes under the Elland bypass and then joins it from the left (southbound traffic only). There is no slip road coming down the hill, but there is a footway from the bus layby down to Huddersfield Road. The Bypass road is called Calderdale Way, slightly confusing as this is also the name of a footpath route around the upper Calder valley. The photo is taken from a quarried area known as 'The Rough'.

North of here, I bring you the notoriously Closed to Thru Traffic Devil's Slide - Highway 1 nearest Pacifica, Calif.
Annual rainfall creates landslide havoc on this stretch of roadway, therefore, as you might have guessed, there's lots & lots of asphalt in the sea below.... a few motor vehicles too. The roadway definitely gets your attention, particularly after you notice that, in many areas of the roadway, there is no guard rail in place to prevent you from plunging into the ocean. You see, the guard rail would end up in the drink just prior to the roadway given the precarious slope of the roadway.
