Mexico really isn't all that bad, except for maybe places like Juarez, Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa to name a few, but who the hell would want to spend money to travel to those places? If you keep to cities like Cozumel, Cancun, Cabo, Campeche, Yucutan, Queretero or Puebla you should be fine, and those cities offer a wide enough range of "touristy" activities and historical value to get your money's worth IMO.
Even Tijuana and Rosarito aren't all that bad, just don't go too far out of the "metro" areas too late at night, especially by yourself (male or female), don't be a dumbass, and always keep $50-$100 in your sock just in case you have to bribe the Federales, because they will pull you in for anything, say its against the law, and if you don't give them any $$ you go to jail. Being a police officer in any part of Mexico is an entrepreneurial exercise, just a fact.
Going to Mexico is pretty much just like going to any big city in the US, just stay out of the wrong areas (and avoid wearing expensive jewelry, clothes, spending large amounts of cash etc...) and you'll pretty much be fine. Its like going to Oakland, just know where and where not to go, and as a tourist, that seems pretty easy to determine.
