XBO360: E74 error same a RROD

no its msft new way of getting out of the rrod / ie the 3 year warranty . and also its a problem with the audio video cable try changing it for a new one if not send it off to them

I dont remember which it is either E73 or E74 but it can be temporarily fixed by unplugging all cables except for the power cable then wrapping it completely in towels and letting it overheat to the point it turns off. Then uncover and let it cool down and it will fix it. I bought an elite a couple weeks back and it gave me this error and I did this trick and I havent had a problem with it since(over two weeks since and many long gaming sessions). Most people will have to do it at least once a week from what Ive read.

Looking for opinions. Is E74 error same a RROD. I think it might be the same problem, Microsoft just relabled the error.

Technically speaking, it's not. E74 is specifically for overheating related problems, and the RRoD is just a general fatal hardware error.

All of that and you still have people that think that 360 is a better machine than PS3.:1orglaugh

My XBOX360 experience has been frusterating. I've had RROD, E73, and E74. I am getting tired of if. RROD had to send it in for the free fix, E73 was dead hard drive, and E74 I did the towel thing it did work, so a opened it and put new Heat Sink Compound in the video chip, its working, i thinks its fixed, we shall see. thanks everyone for all the input

To be honest, right now the 360 is the better machine in terms of power and ease of development. The PS3 definately has the potential to change this, but no developer has found the most efficient ways to work with it's architecture.

my 360 had 3 RRODs .... if it gets another i buy a PS3..

but i just hope my 360 don't fail no more

Microsoft has finally gotten it's act together and completely changed the architecture of the X-Box, so if you end up getting a new one, you will most likely not have to worry about it again.

If you get a new X-Box would you have to worry about this E74 thing. I'm thinking about ordering one of those new RE5 X-boxes, would that be considered a new one?

If you buy an xbox 360 manufactured after october 2008 , you have a pretty good chance of getting the new "Jasper" architecture witch has a 65 nanometer cpu as well as gpu and a much bigger heat sink so its much less likely to have the rrod . The red resident evil 5 console is probably a "jasper" because i'm assuming it must have been manufactured at the start of 2009.

Had this issue its the connector as the back of the xbox were the video cable goes its broke and needs replacing and o yes that means sending it back AGAIN to microsoft its a right pain wish there would just create a machine that wont brake after a certain time.

Honestly, you shouldn't really have to worry too much about it, because it's still pretty rare, but with the new architecture, you're probably safe.

i'm not 100% sure about that because i'm in Europe so i don't know if xbox
consoles sent in Europe are all " brand new " consoles.....

Worldwide, the systems all essentially come from one of three places, and they all manufacture the X-Box to the same set of standards, and with the exact same parts.

i have had my xbox since launch...i have only had one RROD and it was because i was stupid much like anybody else that gets it. If you get RROD it is because you do not have the xbox ventilated enough, and people will argue that they did but it is a load of shit, if somebody has had 3 RRODs they did not learn their lesson. Lets see would you put a computer tower in an entertainment center, where it has no breathing room and overheats... no. then why would you put an Xbox in one, it is essentially the same. The only reason anybody should have a problem occur with their Xbox is completely the owners fault. Learn to take care of your shit and quit blaming the technology.

The early problems with the 360 were 100% hardware based. Microsoft rushed the design of the system to try to beat Sony, and as a result, the original units had a tiny heat sink, which was reduced to make room for a DVD drive directly above the GPU. Anyone who's ever built or worked with computer hardware can tell you that's a huge no-no. The added heat often times was never properly disposed of, and as a result, hardware began to fail. Consider also that testing of old units versus newer architectures has shown an average of 8 degree cooler new units on the interior. Sure, there are people who don't properly insulate their X-box, but the earliest units were just plain faulty.
