World Cup "What if" poser

Just throwing a “what if” scenario out there to ease my boredom at work until the Argentina Nigeria live text starts

What happened (It can’t now) but what would happen if all the group games finished in a 1-1 draw? I put it into a world cup spreadsheet and it seemed to put the 2 favourites through from each group (with the exception of group A with South Africa going through)

Anyone know the rules for something like this? Who would go through with same points, goals scored and goals against totals?

Or would it simply be a 4 team penalty shootout?

In case of a tie FIFA draws straws. It happened it 1990 when Ireland and the Netherlands were dead even in their group. Both went through but it had to be decided who took the #2 slot in their group for the next round. The Dutch were unlucky, lost the draw and had to play against West Germany (and lost)

It will finally be about actually a lottery who goes on - but I promise you, that won't be necessary.

All those games ending in ties only mean that those teams have to put out a lot more in their second and thirf games, or they will be left behind.

So there will be some fevered attempts to make some fast goals and that will eventually lead to some open spaces in the defense and some kick-and-rush when the ball gets off to the other team

I am sure this tournament will take up speed soon!
