Which is the lesser of two evils as far as Brazilians are concerned? Argentina winning the World Cup or getting beat by them (possibly hammered) in the 3rd place play-off?

Seems like nobody wanna play Germany, both would prefer to play Brazil...

The commentators described the Netherlands vs. Argentina game as tactical but I wanted to see some goals. I dislike it when the teams must go into a penalty kick shootout to decide the winner. Way to go Argentina!

Guys, I still can't believe it!!!!! Argentina is on the Final of the World Cup!!!!!!
Finally, after 24 years. Was a hard game, Messi appeared a few times but never near the target. Mascherano played one of the most amazing games ever, he was the man of the match, but Romero deserved it too for the penalties. Well, I think the whole team deserved it.
Now Germany...well, to be honest, I don't know if it's what we wanted, but we will give everything.
Go Go Go ARG!!!!!

I guess you would have prefered to play Brazil, just to have the satisfaction of beating your great rival, just to do a remake of the 1950 final, with Argentina instead of Uruguay.

Of course!! It would be amazing really. But, the last final we played was with Germany too, and we failed to win. So if we can win against them, and at our classic rival's home, would be the best thing for us.
Regards!

"Tactical" is probably some type of sugar coated code speak for "incredibly boring". It embodies just about all the reasons Americans are right not to like soccer. I mean who doesn't love the mighty 0-0 tie? I don't want to see the supposed best among the world's teams play scared the entire game, and then do what is the equivalent of drawing straws at the end to decide who wins.

Some 0-0 tiees can be great games with many attacking moves on both sides, many tackles, many goalkeeper saves, etc... But that Netherlands-Argentina was a terrible game.
Games can be tactical but still interesting. What made the game so boring was that no team try to take a chance, to try something that would put them at risk if it would have failed. Players were scared of making bad passes, of putting their tem in a dangerouys situation. For example, dutch winger Dirk Kuyt made almost only backwards passes, very few forwards passes. 'cause passing the game forward would have been takingthe risk that an argentinian guy would intercept it and countert-attack...

The game was boring because both teams were playing not to loose the game instead of playing to win the game.

I won't begrudge the rest of the world of their for their soccer thing for ties. They make the rules and so be it. It's to cut down on the length of the game. But can you see the same thing in baseball? After 9 innings of regulation play 2 more then have the ending rules change. First man to reach base wins the game. Having a basketball game decided on foul shots. No soot outs in NHL playoff games. Play the game till someone wins. It's the American way.

I already bet these

Brazil/Netherlands Over 3 (History shows 3rd place WC game flies over the total)
Germany +120 and Over 2 -120

About the bets, Neth and Argen play to 0-0 in regulation. Penalty kicks are 2-4. How are payoffs made? Does under 2 goals win or the 6 scored in penalties make it an over?

Is somewhere outhere.
£250 notes guaranteed. Just need Germany to win to turn it into a pleasant £500. Thank you company sweepstake.

You have a good chance of this. As long as Germany stops Messi, then I think they will win the cup. I was just wondering if Germany will get to keep the cup, as Brazil kept the Jules Rimet trophy after 1970. If they or the Argentines win, then that will be their 3rd time so like the Brazilians they should be able to keep it as well.

Perhaps we will finally see a new trophy at Russia 2018.

Messi isn't the only threat : Di Maria, Lavezzi and Higuain (or Aguero) can be very dangerous as well. Aloso, the guy to block isn't Messi, it's Mascherano : You isolate him, you put him in a situation in wich he has no or very few opportunities to make good passes and you've blocked Argentina's offensive power. 'cause all Argetina's offensive moves starts with Mascherano.

Also, imho, Germany has many more offensive threats than Argentina : Muller, Klose, Kroos, Ozil, + they have guys's like Schurrle, Draxler or Gotze. Also, Germany doesn't have one guy that starts every ofr their offensive moves and that you just have to block to paralyse the team (lik Mascherano is for Argentina) : If you block Khedira, they would rely on Scweinstiger and Lahm.

In fact, the key to this game is wether German's attackers will be able to break Argentina's defense, wich no one did during the knock-out stage

Things are also different in those other sports because teams score more so there are less ties in general, and in none of the teams can sit back and play defense because even if you make it harder the other team still has a somewhat decent chance of scoring and winning, while you have almost no chance if you are not even trying. That's a terrible trade off no smart team is going to do in those other sports. Yes, once in a very great while there will be a game in a major North American sport where things are tied up at the end and it drags on a long time, but in reality that a rarity. It's rare enough it's not a big deal.

Plus, since a team can score more easily it allows more aggressive tactics because it's actually reasonably possible to come back, especially if one is the better team. In basketball for example if somebody steals the ball right off the bat and nails a perfect 3 pointer in the overall scheme of the game it's not a big deal. In the NFL if the QB gets intercepted on a risky pass on the first play, and the other team returns it all the way it's by no means a good thing, but it's by no means like the rest of the game is some hopeless cause at that point. If somebody messes up and allows a goal in the first 10 seconds of a soccer match that has a very good probability of pretty much screwing the team that allowed the goal right then and there and a good chance they will now lose because of little more than that.

As was talked about above about the differences of "playing to win" and "playing not to lose" by it's vary nature soccer requires playing not to lose and an integral part of the sport because of one bad incident having so much impact on the entire game. It's one of it's biggest problems.

Perhaps we will finally see a new trophy at Russia 2018.

In 2006 Italy won their 4th World Cup
In 2002 Brazil won their 5th World Cup.
In 1994 Brazil won their 4th World Cup.
In 1990 Germany won their 3rd World Cup.
In 1982 Italy won their 3rd World Cup.

The "rule" about the first team to reach 3 victories getting to keep the trophy was only valid for the Jules Rimet, not for the current trophy.

The original FIFA World Cup Trophy cannot be won outright anymore, as the new regulations state that it shall remain FIFA's own possession. Instead, the FIFA World Cup winners are awarded a replica which they get to keep as a permanent reminder of their great triumph. These gold-plated replicas are referred to as the FIFA World Cup Winners' Trophies.
FIFA regulation : http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/organisation/marketing/brand/trophy.html

But the winning country has its name engraved on the bottom of the trophy and, after this years's winner's name will engraved, there will be enough space for only 3 more names so the trophy might get changed after WC 2026 and a new trophy be presented for WC 2030.
