But what's more prevalent and what's more likely to happen?

The Taliban still have a U.S. soldier captive and every once in awhile will release a video him. Yes, disturbing and infuriating for sure but imagine how much more so if it were a female soldier being gang raped by the Taliban on video. And maybe I'm old fashioned, but there's just a fundamentally different effect on the psyche between seeing a woman abused as opposed to a man. But then I'm still holding doors open for women.

And when captured by a fanatical enemy no one is going to be treated well. Yeah, men will get raped and tortured just like the women.

It's traumatic for anyone to be raped, and men are significantly less likely to report it due to increased shame ("real men" are expected to be strong and able to protect themselves).

While you may find it more disturbing to witness a woman being abused than a man, it's not really about your reaction to it. It's about the person being abused.

A typical infantry unit carries a heavy combat payload. They carry 70 pound rucks body armor atleast 45 pounds and weapons so a total of atleast 130+ pounds. The Marine Corps had already opened Infantry up to female officers. The first three failed the E Course which is the first day of IOC. The next two one passed the E Course but she withdrew two weeks into the course because of medical problems. But we will see If the Marines and U.S. Army lowers infantry physical standards for women. I know that some women can meet the standards, but they shoudn't be lowered. I know many career infantry soldiers who are messed up by their mid 30s, its hell on your body. Only 1 out of 5 people who join the military retire from it.

When I was in, I served with some damn good women soldiers....but honestly, they were in the distinct minority. I would classify somewhere around 70% of the women soldiers in my "sphere of experience" weren't worth the trouble and I wouldn't trust in combat.

I also consider the upper body strength thing to be a big, honkin' deal. I could have hoisted someone bigger than me over my shoulder and carried them out of harms way if I ever had to. Maybe 10% (if that) of the women I remember could've done the same for me and my 6', 210 lb. frame. In other words, I was hardly a giant, by Army standards.

Seeing as you served in the American military, I'd say 30% of competent service personnel of either sex is amazingly good :tongue:
Another thing: infantry carry a LOT of gear. Can a woman REALLY carry all that?

womens have eyes for details, so i'd rather put them on logistics.
anyways nowadays war doesn't need any big muscle, with all those modern weapons, so i believe wont be hard.

Then again I don't really trust anyone.

I'm going to have to suck it up. My first thoughts were if a woman can do the job and she wants it, that's okay. After listening to a buddy of mine I discovered a new perspective. We love our women. We don't want them to walk behind us. We want them by our side. Finding a good woman to support us is really, really special. It may be the caveman in us but when there is a noise in the middle of the night from the kitchen, we jump up and protect. When things get tough supporting the home, we do the worrying and she comforts us. We overprotect our daughters. This is not a bad mindset.

Don't get me wrong, it's not about the woman belonging in the home. It's not about men doing anything better than women. It's about how we appreciate what a woman can do for us. Taking that away is devastating. Some time back I saw a study done about how long it takes for men and women to get over a dating breakup. It took men 2 months on average and women only 2 weeks. Tells a lot about how men cherish women.

The vision of women being cut down in war. Bloody and dead. Coming home in wheelchairs. In hospitals missing limbs. How the enemy like to show off prisoners. Too much for this guy to handle.

I'd say for most normal people that's too much to handle. If anyone takes exception to that I don't know what else to say but ... fuck you? You can try social engineering all you want but it doesn't overcome human nature. If you're a man, your natural inclination is to be protective of women unless you're just wired different i.e. you're really into rainbows and unicorns. Regardless of how capable a woman may be, it's hard to overlook that this is someone's daughter, wife, mom, sister or for some people a combination thereof.
