Windows 8 to blame for decline in pcs

Samsung Electronics exec blames Windows 8 for the decline of the PC

Jun Dong-soo isn't mincing his words. The Samsung Electronics head of memory chip business has a strong distaste for Microsoft's nascent Windows 8 OS, a viewpoint he made clear to reporters in Seoul, South Korea today. Addressing market research that indicates global PC shipments are on the decline, Dong-soo told reporters that the market segment has failed to see a boost from Windows 8 as it's "no better than the previous Windows Vista platform."

Dong-soo even went on to link the poor attach rate for ultrabooks to Microsoft's "less competitive Windows platform." Unsurprisingly, this had led the Samsung exec to shift his division's focus from the fabrication of "conventional" memory chips to the more profitable and booming mobile chip segment. A move no doubt bolstered by the continued prominence of Samsung's Galaxy portfolio (e.g., Note II, GS III and upcoming GS IV). You have to hand it to Dong-soo, no one can accuse him of dealing in executive doublespeak.

Microsoft needs to get their act together.

Samsung could take the opportunity to start taking over the computer market.

More competition in the computer industry would be a good thing.

I don't blame Windows 8 for decline in PC sales. I think that is more to do with people using mobile more. People used to sit at their computer and check facebook or their email, and now they do it 24/7 on their phone. Though I do think Windows 8 is terrible for desktops.

I would still be on Windows XP if it wasn't for lack of security updates and the RAM limitations.

It's because Windows is better suited for Gaming.

Do you do any gaming or anything? I would love to try Linux or Mac but it seems like everything is made for Windows users in mind.

You can game on Linux now. Things have changed dramatically over the past four years and it is becoming a big gaming platform thanks to new software and hardware support. Valve Software is making their own Linux gaming platform and Ubuntu is making lots of changes to bring better gaming to their distro.

I agree with you. I think it's more than just about Windows 8. I believe Mac sales were also down last quarter. The entire PC industry has been in decline for some time. And like you, I believe that more people moving to mobile products is the reason. Let's face it, how many people really need to sit at a desk (at home) and to be plugged into a device which does about the same things as their tablet or phone? Most people use their computers to check email, surf the web or play on social networks. Most do not spend their days toiling over CAD/CAM programs and spreadsheets. So the need for real computing horsepower just isn't there for most people.

I guess people still use desktops for gaming. But even there, the growth no longer seems to be there. Consoles seem to be eating the PC's lunch there too.

P.S. I run Windows XP SP3 on my Mac. And since I only use it to run older legacy programs and those that aren't available on the Mac OS, it suits me just fine. But the Windows side of the Mac usually isn't connected to the internet, so security concerns aren't really there. But I see exactly what you're saying. As a purely utilitarian (secondary) OS, I think XP fits the bill for me very well.

*Has Windows 8. Is fine with Windows 8. Prefers it to Vista.*
To be fair, I'd prefer an abacus to Vista...

I would still be on Windows XP if it wasn't for lack of security updates and the RAM limitations.
I'm still using XP. It just works. Granted, I'm using a netbook and therefore enjoy stark limitations on what my hardware would be able to do anyway...

More to the point, most of the growth in the gaming industry is in mobile games. $0.99 app games are murdering the proper game productions these days.

None of this is particularly new, though. Just a continuation of the times. I haven't read all that much on Windows 8, but far as I can tell, it was just a poor attempt by Microsoft to stay on top of the times.

Samsung is more worried about making microwaves and speakers.

As far as computers, it's Microsoft and Apple.

That's it........That's the list.

Besides, who cares what a dude named "Dong" says?

They just need to look into getting more of the pie in computers and software.

Exactly. That's why I think windows 8 is a bad joke. It's focused on people who use their tablets and phones anyway, and people who want to use their desktop in a productive way don't need this crap.
It's a general problem that every company caused in my opinion. Everybody keeps adding stuff to devices that weren't meant for it. What used to be a cellphone is now more or less a computer and what used to be a computer is now a fucking big cellphone.
