For what it's worth, when I moved to the UK, I did so with a backpack stuffed with as much as it could hold (I sold off the rest of my things), a cheap pre-paid phone, and some loose contacts around the country and stayed that way for about four months before I finally landed a job and a place to live.
The tool that helped out the most:
www.couchsurfing.com It certainly isn't for everyone, but after those months, I've got friends all over the country, some of whom put me up for weeks before they knew me at all - it's how I met the people I'm living with now and found they had a spare room that needed renting.
It was a life saver, in any case, considering I had no car to sleep in or really any money for hostels and such.
Anyway, good luck.
