Oh for the love of all that is good.... Somebody put this thread out of it's misery.:ak47::violent:

Well, there are over 30 million Hispanics in the country today, only to eventually be the dominant minority group in a couple decades. It's a big sport in the Latino community, therefore...:dunno:

^
Gee, when I read a thread title that I don't like, I kinda stay out of that thread. :dunno:

You should know that's not realistic around here.
Anyway, everyone (including yourself) is just rotating the same statements over and over and over and over and over.... There's nothing new.
With this many pages into the thread, it's pointless. She's cleaned up, been paid, gone home. You're all circle jerking into a puddle amongst yourselves. Raw, bloody, it's disgusting. (eww)

Well said Moony, but if people didn't repeat the shit out of themselves on freeones we would have a sudden drop in world population.

Baseball is on the way down. The people who actually bother to go to baseball games today spend more time on their fucking cellphones/iPhones than actually watching the game. Baseball's only hope is to contract about 6 teams and load up the rosters with talent so teams aren't playing Zombie seasons by the time June rolls around

MLB average attendance from the past year - 30,000 per game.
MLS average attendance from the this year - 16,000 per game.

I have no idea why people being on cell phones has any bearing on why attendance for MLB will fall. That's an indictment of modern society, not specific to baseball fans. That's tantamount to saying the NFL is dying a slow death because people have to wait in line for food. That's complete nonsense.

Hockey has a lot of commercial breaks built into the game play. That didn't help it stay on ESPN did it? Hockey (in the U.S.) is now banished to the ether of Versus where it has to do battle for relevance with MMA (and redneck sports too) I thought Hockey was trying to tone down fighting in its sport? ;)

The NFL and NBA have the highest commercial to game time, and guess who took over second this year? The MLS. Soccer, if it's going to get popular in America, will be no different than any other sport: it'll be commercialized beyond anything else worldwide. That's part of the deal.

Soccer will take over the 3rd position in America...especially if the U.S. gets to host a World Cup again. ESPN shows more Soccer content than Hockey content right now. It's just a matter of time people.

Soccer is a purely free-flowing game and it's a totally different viewing experience rather than the parade of action stoppages that constitutes NFL, NBA, MLB...

The MLS already took over the 3rd spot in attendance, based largely on the fact that ESPN has granted them TV coverage. Is it any coincidence that ESPN let their contract with the NHL run out because Bettman wanted more money, (in accordance with their increase in viewer-ship), and that the MLS, desiring a fraction of the money of the NHL took over the spot, (because of their lack of viewer-ship)?

Just for the record, according to Nielson, the ESPN coverage of the World Cup ran the third highest percentage of commercials of any of ESPN's coverage of any other sport.

Hmm. Are we talking about commercials in-game or during broadcast? Because I gotta tell ya...I watched quite a few World Cup matches and I don't recall seeing too many commercial cutaways during the actual match play...

I have no doubt they stuffed a shitload of commercials during the halftime break...

For the record I am more of a fan of Hockey than Baseball, and I would rather see Hockey get back on ESPN than its present excommunication on Versus with a couple of NBC games...if we gotta give fucking Poker the boot to get Hockey back...I say we do that.

I will make the hard-to-prove statement that there is more cellphone action by "fans" occuring during baseball than any other Pro sport....this means people aren't engaged with the action...and that could prove fatal

We're talking total commercial time. According to Nielson, the breakup of the commercials is about 25 first half, 50 half time, and 25 second half. The average amount of time is roughly 1/4 of a 90 minute game. Compare that to the roughly 15% of a full length MLB game. Also consider the fact that unlike every other major sport in America, MLB is the only one that doesn't force timeouts, therefore if the games were shortened, so too would the commercial time. This is untrue of the others.

Change the bolded section to "impossible" and you're talking. Baseball stadiums average roughly 30,000 seats, and they don't often sell out across the league. NFL stadiums house roughly 70,000 fans, and have the most sellouts of any major professional sport. By sheer numbers one would be able to tell that theory is hogwash.

You've also neglected something very, very crucial to your argument: television viewership is up. MLB revenue from sales of merchandise is up nearly 25% in the past 5 years. If fans are losing interest, wouldn't they stop spending their time watching, and spending their money on merchandise?

At this point, your statement is little more than irrational conjecture. Hell, with the rise of smartphones, those same people you seem to believe are going to kill baseball could be buying baseball merchandise online. Bottom line is that theory holds no water.

Has anyone wondered why American sports aren't popular outside of America.
This article may help.

All the four "major" pro sports are indigenous to America (well hockey is as well, sort of) so it's not unreasonable that we like them better. Fact is, baseball and basketball are becoming global sports now more than ever, and hockey has spread to much of northern Europe. The opposite can probably be said about soccer; it's not indigenous to North America and therefore it is only right that we still give it some time. Olympics in London will be awesome to watch the national team play with Donovan leading the charge.

because your shit at it

WELL, WELL-Y, WELL! 31 pages into the thread and along comes the answer (and so original too. Yep. First time someone has said that.). Good work. Yes, that MUST be the reason. Thank you. Thank you o' so much for finally coming in with your gem of wisdom. People have been trying to figure it out for such a long time, people have been working in laboratories day and night, killing monkeys in the name of science, and all the world needed was for someone to come along with a simple 5 words. "because your (you're) shit at it". Fantastic. Terrific. Terrific. I guess we can close the thread now because YOU have the answer. :horse::rubbel:

The one thing I hate about the NFL and Football is that it's so commercialized. I get sick and tired of all the commercials during football games and it's true that there's only 11 minutes of action during a football game because they show so many damn commercials. I just hate the stopping and starting so much.
