It would be nice if we had leadership in Washington. Not an exclusive knock on Obama here - everyone. Just pisses me off that they all act this way.
Hey, if they came together for the good of the people...that would be exciting to me.
Call me naive...but the way I see it congressional members who really don't support a president's position on something (irrespective of president) are not going to vote with him unless the argument for his policy or against their position is so overwhelming that their position becomes untenable politically.
Even then, in allot of cases House members still won't depending on the nature of their district.
In this case Obama is to blame for being a little too milquetoast in his challenge to his opposition.
What that means is he has failed in shooting down their arguments, he has failed in calling them out on their inconsistency, he has failed in creating a consistent momentum for the policy he wants or believes is best.
Failing that, an opposition party isn't going to give you anything. Why should they when you haven't compelled them to? It's like trying to convince a hostile jury to return a verdict favorable to your side...you have to remove any cover they have for not doing so.
Even then with some politicians..it won't matter but the ones who have a political conscience and aren't utterly incorrigible will make way for you to get the votes you need while other members have safe cover in their districts.
The sad truth, the opposition party would not be doing their job if they didn't force a president to sell his policy effectively. Again, it's like a good defense lawyer. They don't 'get' anyone off...their job if done well is to make sure prosecutors have thoroughly done theirs and if the defendant is found guilty, he's made sure the prosecutor made the case by protecting every one of the defendants rights.
That's just politics.
