Why do Americans think there are only two sides to political issues?

Everybody seems to think that the only choices are left wing and right wing with an odd moderate thrown in. Why?

I'm also going to put a lot of this on the news media. It's a lot easier for them to deal with binary issues. Yes, No. Up, Down. Forward, Backward. Left, Right. Black, White, it requires them to know a lot more to deal with shades of grey.
