I understand the spirit of competition in sports, but why are sports so important and how is it helpful to the world? Sure it helps with being fit and healthy, but there are more beneficial ways of becoming fit and healthy.
I think it's important at a younger age to teach the benefits of competition, commitment, preparation, teamwork, camaraderie, sportsmanship in victory and defeat and yes, that there are winners and losers, but also perspective - it's a game.
As far as spectators go - there's no importance at all, at least there shouldn't be. Go team. Yay, "'We' won," while my fat ass was scarfing down buffalo wings and nachos and hollering like an idiot for 3 hours.
