Yesterday I'm at the mall looking for the Verizon store when this chick comes up to me. Right away I knew she was either trying to sell me something or ask for a handout. She says to me "can you please help me? my car broke down, my boyfriend beats me and I need money. Just give me your name and address and I promise to send you the money back." I told her sorry cant help you.

I've been screwed and scammed before, but seems like everywhere I go I just get targeted by these people

Yeah, I understand that times are tough right now economically. But for every person out there that genuinely needs help, there are just as many trying to take advantage of the situation. How do you know who to trust? I guess I would have offered to fix her car and told her to call the police. But I agree, I don't give money to anyone. No guarantees you'll see it again.

As far as being approached by people, I bet if you mumbled to yourself in public and carried a sword, people wouldn't come close. But seriously, she probably just gauged your disposition and thought you looked like a kind person. This happens to my mother all the time. People hit her up at the supermarket to buy food for their kids. She feels bad, but she's buying not groceries for anyone right now regardless of what sob story they tell her.

There's an easy solution to that. Keep walking. I've given my fair share to people with hopelessly pitiful stories and I've felt good about it until I saw one of them belly up to the bar for a drink with the five bucks I gave im'. Charity is fine if you're giving to a reputable program or volunteering your time but giving strangers money just encourages the behavior.

You probably have an open, honest and kind face that'll attract beggars like moths to a flame. Start walking around with a scowl on your face. That should scare them off.

it happened to some of my friends last week, asking money, i gave them a couple of pounds moments later he was tucking into a kebab when he said the money was for the bus.

Maybe you give off a scent that no one else does that only beggers and scammers can detect :dunno:

Although as most of the people who have already posted on this thread have said they have had similar experiences I guess this it's more common than you think....

You don't by Chance have the word "sucker" tattooed on your forehead do you?:dunno::D

Im beginning to think I do.

I feel more like I'm part of some scammer's database system of easy targets.

Thing is I'm broke as shit, these idiots are just wasting their time.

I like the ones that circulate the shopping mall parking lots in their late model sport compacts who pull up aside of you when you're walking to the front door of, say, Bed Bath and Beyond - "Excuse me, I'm from out of the area and I'm kinda lost, could you help me ? Listen, I'm both late and lost and as a result of being "lost", I'm about to run out of gas, could you spare me $5 or 10 bucks for gas so that I can get to my destination." They're so sorry for having to ask a stranger ~ You don't know how embarrassing this is" yadda yadda.:o

I always give 'em something - The disingenuous pleas pay $2, the overtly painful ones e.g. crying chic whose obviously in need - as much as $15.

BTW - After spending 20 mins. in Bed Bath and Beyond, I saw the same chic in the same late model Honda, talking to another mall patron with her local Honda dealership license plate frame (rear plate) -

dealership - about 4 miles away from mall.

What are ya gonna do:dunno:

Most are scam artists I was in union train station in some guy was trying to tell me to cash his check for him and he would even be nice enough to walk me to the bank ya ok buddy. The worst is when they say hey buddy and you say no thanks they than put this flyer in your hand , I just ripped it up and say I said no thanks. Best is probably not to respond and keep walking

After working in San Fagcisco for the past 5 or so years I've quite good at phasing out beggars. I don't even look at them anymore. A few times when I've decided to momentarily tune in to what they're saying they're bitching at me for not even listening to their spiel. flylicker
