While I think a lot of this stupid Americans-idea is just as stupid itself, all these clips with retarded people who are more stupid than fifth-graders here do say something.
I mean, even if the guys doing these clips ask 10 000 people, finding one hundred who can't point out Australia on a map or name the capital of India are too many.
My theory is that there's just a big gap between regular/intellectual Americans who are like the average Europeans and those who are extremely behind. You probably have a much larger group of these kind of people. But then again, the US is the world's third most populous contry and so it's quite natural that there's internal differences. But I can't say I look up to the average American for living in the world's current super power.

Oh boy, this will be interesting. IMO stereotyping is to be avoided at all costs. Particularly in a community environment, like this bulletin board/forum. American's are not stupid. That's a generalisation, a false one too. Avoid that ****.
Well I know someone's gonna post the literacy rate and rave about that. So I wont. I'm just going to say that in my travels I have met some extraordinarily ignorant people. That does not necessarily equate to stupidity - although posting such a question on a .com bulletin board does?
