nahh c mon now. there are some good ones. Ne-Yo, Usher, Mario, Avant. There are still a few good artist out there

R. Kelly is still king despite popular belief ( what's a king without controversy), Usher hasn't really enough albums (five?) and his songs lean more pop/r&b. Ne-Yo is dominant and has crossover appeal, but is kinda one note. There's T-Pain, he's a decent singer and producer but too gimmicky. Don't even get me started on the Dream.

Unfortunately you are right that R&B was hit hard by Disco in the 70's,Pop, & then had the nail put in it's coffin with hip hop in the early/mid 80's
There are still old school R&B artist out there like Lionel Richie(who went Pop),Frankie Beverly/Maze, Prince,Stevie Wonder,etc.....but among young artists I would give the title of King(in a weak era) to the consistently beautiful music of MAXWELL. Surprised he hasn't been mentioned so far.:dunno:
R Kelly is more hip hop oriented 'New Jack Swing'(in the mold of Teddy Riley) but Maxwell is pure contemporary R&B/Soul. However I do really like some R Kelly tunes like the following:

In such a weak era MAXWELL is the only young artist I can give that title(King) to. Check out his stuff on youtube or wherever & let me know if you guys agree.
