Who is Neil Armstrong?

I'm watching a doc on BBC4 right now called For All Man Kind about the 24 men who landed on the mood. It's very interesting. Check it out on the iPlayer if you can.

It's easier, safer and much, much cheaper to study the moon and the rest of the universe without putting a man on it. That's why no one has been back.

I think you mean Moon not mood. ;-) and it was 12 men who landed on the moon. Two each from Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 & 17.

I am sure he has made some money, and am very happy he has, but compared to his peers, is probably a much smaller figure. People with that sort of world wide recognition can command huge sums if they wanted. Tony Blair can be booked for €200,000 for about half an hours public speaking, Bill Clinton commands similar sorts of manoey for his apearances. I am sure Neil could command a similar figure should he wish to do so.

Shortly after Apollo 11 landing, I was talking to one of my father's oldest friends. He was Ed White's uncle. (Ed White was the first American to walk in space and Apollo 1's Commander.) After the Apollo 1 Memorial service Neil Armstrong sat down and talked to him for over a half hour. Armstrong talked about the program, the dangers, the calculated risks, etc. He was very impressed with Armstrong's intelligence, maturity, judgement, & modesty. The exact opposite of how you would think of a hot shot test pilot/astronaut.

Its nice to know that fame and pursual of it does not make a jumped up media whore out of everybody.

If you read the authorized biography you will know that during the Apollo programme all the astronauts were scheduled to go off on PR tours around the world. They all hated it. It was known among them as "Your week in the barrel." After they came back from the moon, the crew of Apollo 11 did a ton of PR. Over the years Neil Armstrong has done some promotional work for various companies. He is not a hermit.

I met him at a party about five years ago (I was told he was going to be there) he is an old man now. He was stood in the kitchen. I walked in carrying my son who was a toddler at the time. Usually strangers hold out their hand and say, "hi I'm John Smith" or whatever. He just shook my hand and said, "hi I'm Neil". We talked about the kid I was holding and which of the other ones running around at the party were related to us or not.

I always remind my son that the got to shake hands with Neil Armstrong.
