Who are we? How just 13% of America's high school students know their U.S. history

Re: Who are we? How just 13% of America's high school students know their U.S. histor

Blame the educational system for that.If you look at math and science figures, you'll see things are even worse in those departments. We are lagging behind Asian countries in the field of academics.Instead of trying better, we whine about outsourcing. In global economy, bears and bulls get the share.Pigs get slayed. So, if we have to keep our chances alive in job market, we have to buckle up now.

Blame the bastardization of the educational system known as No Child Left Behind.
Instead of working to form young minds to not only embrace logical thinking, but creative thinking, our education system, under the direction of Bush, was forced instead to focus almost completely on standardized testing scores - none of which are helping our children learn, nor are they going to help them once they get out of school.
Yet another failure of a program by that total failure of a President.

Is history really that important? So what Columbus found America in 1907? So what the state lines were determined in a game of darts? Knowing this doesn't put food on my plate.

So many Americans think I'm English because of my accent, even though I'm straight out Aussie.

You are a whacky bunch...

P.S. Do not think for a second that Aussies speak like "shrimp on the barbie" and have kangaroos running around our backgrounds. That's just uneducated.

''So many'' doesn't give us an accurate sampling.... don't you remember statistics class? :1orglaugh

Re: Who are we? How just 13% of America's high school students know their U.S. histor

I blame High School Sports, at least here where I live. Yeah, it's a good thing to have extracurricular activities and keep active, but here in Texas, Football and Basketball is everything. Football is actually a class that takes up 1/4 of your schedule and some teachers (coaches) are just there teaching because they win championships for either the basketball or football team, not because they are competent in the subject at hand. If you have a coach as a teacher, be prepared to watch movies all semester long or just fuck around because nothing is going to get done in that class.

I played football for 3 years in high school and it was crazy how some of the guys in the locker room seriously thought they were gonna be all-star pro NFL players. I just did it for fun, but some of them focused their whole life on it. Some teachers told me they would also get discouraged from teaching because they would have to pass all the good players or face getting fired or put on a blacklist if they didn't, the whole thing is really fucked up.

The so called "teachers" only teach what they want or are allowed to teach. I can give a couple examples:

1. Any American knows the story of how Jesse Owens was snubbed by Hitler at the Berlin Olympics. That is 100% grade A bullshit. Hitler actually waved at Owens and met him behind the area after. It was President Roosevelt that snubbed Owens. He didn't even send him a telegram or letter of congratulations.
Interesting reading, apparently Owens was loved by the German crowd which is something a Black American would not experience back home.

Blame the schools/school districts and anyone who has a say what kind of history should be taught. That means keeping loonies away from brainwashing the kids on how "evil whitey is".

I've been saying for years that Americans are dumb. We need to realize that we aren't number 1 anymore, those days are over. Our education system is broken, our healthcare system is horrible and our infrastructure is crumbling.

Carlos Mencia is my idol.He excelled in academics as well as in his talent on screen and stage shows as a comedian.

Regarding that less than A and killing part, yes, a friend of mine from China says so.

Great point, mr. jizz!! When you see that all you have to do is play around, then people just don't choose the difficult route like breaking their head on math , history or literature.Every other guy who plays football, dreams of beings a NFL guy. That's not wrong, but in the mean time, studies are awfully neglected. It's funny that they get college scholarships and don't have to attain classes at all.Good for them, but for many others, its a heart breaking experience.Like you I played football for fun.I was lucky enough to have wealthy grandparents who have willed a part of their business in my name, but sadly, I see some guys out there at school and college were not so lucky.Football and even baseball fucked them up.They even locate their state on the map of USA.
Pressurizing the teachers to get the good players through the exams is a really fucked up principle.Corrupt practice I should say.
We just need a good balance, rather than laying full focus on a particular thing.

It reminds me of the Movie "October Sky".As the elder brother got college scholarship by playing football, the young one was encouraged to do so or work at the coal mine, but he had his passion in building rockets. And we all know what happened to him.The legendary Homer Hickam.

It's the Outcome-Based Education that's been the problem, silly!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcome-based_education

Also - Whole Language, Self Esteem, Multiculturalism, Invented Spelling, New Math/Reform Math, Cooperative Learning, Constructivism, Bilingual Education, Alternative Assessment, Active Learner, Bilingual Education, Creativity Curriculum and Ebonics, all progressive means of dumbing down the masses in preparation for the brave new socialist government world that awaits u.s.

''No child left behind'' is crap too, but it's negative effects are marginal in comparison to all of the alternative theoretical educational b/s developed by the radical lefty ''academicians''

I leave you with this... (highlight below)

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one.''

I've been saying for years that Americans are dumb. We need to realize that we aren't number 1 anymore, those days are over. Our education system is broken, our healthcare system is horrible and our infrastructure is crumbling.

....and we have two treasonous and often times retarded political parties to thank for that. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and consequently, out of chaos comes order, I get it, we have the best government that money can buy. Our system of government has become undermined in so many ways, it's impossible to cure all of its ailments.

If I go down. I'll sure as hell be swinging, you can count on that, you?

I doubt it is that high. We will never know much of our true history it is hidden and we are lied to.

One of the worse books ever. Nothing more than propaganda.

Re: Who are we? How just 13% of America's high school students know their U.S. histor

I'll be honest. I'm pretty well versed in history and even I only knew the first question because of the style of the buildings in the first photo. I don't think I would have lead off the article with that. It seems like a "president of Nigeria" type of question that wouldn't really reflect ones knowledge of history of this country.

Now all the other general lack of historic knowledge is just sad.
